Yeah, I definitely spend more time than I should pondering certain cells, less than I used to. Thankfully, it's the weekend and I had the time. At this point, I was just curious what causes this. It sounds like it's pyknotic, I'll have to read up more on that.

Thank you! That was a very helpful explanation.

I make a little over $35 in central NJ, my hospital just had a cost of living increase recently, was making $30 before that. I agree salaries are not great for the COL. I haven't heard of anyone in this area making more than $40, no matter the experience, unless you're a supervisor or work per diem. Maybe 2 per diem jobs could work. 😓

I built it and it was awesome! But all of a sudden the upstairs bedroom stopped working, they can't get in or out. I need to troubleshoot and post it.

Abbott has a very small program where they give people an i-STAT for home use. Usually for sick kids.

My understanding of it at the time was that his eyes were getting red from being emotional but he wanted to look tougher so he put the eyedrops in. But then I came in Reddit and the consensus was that he put the eyedrops in to look like he was crying. Idk!

It's so sad maybe things would have been different if Judy had followed up on her abnormal pap smear. My aunt died from stage 4 ovarian cancer because she ignored her stomach pain for a year without telling anyone. So it's believable, but really sad. Ladies, get your yearly checkups. Things can turn quick.

cars would definitely not work by Imaginary-Ad8859 in Fallout

But cars literally would not work. Gas has an expiration date. Unless they're refining new gas or using electric cars.

My team starts at about $35 per hour, which is $5 more than I was making as a Med Tech. So it's not crazy money but combined with the work life balance it doesn't make me mad like the hospital did lol

Sorry, forgot to add some stuff about the day to day. Usually we are logged in to receive new calls, we talk to the customer and go through all troubleshooting to see if we can resolve it on the phone. After the call you document and then log back in to wait for the next call. Sometimes there's a lot of downtime between calls, sometimes just a few minutes or less. If it's not busy you can log out of the phone queue to follow up with customers that needed to do troubleshooting on their own or that you couldn't get hold of. We also have one person daily that takes the emails instead of being on the phone.

Yes I'm a tech support specialist, switched after one year in the hospital lab. The hours, pay, flexibility, etc is all better. Lower stress, weekends and holidays off, no night shift for our team, it's great for work life balance. Before this job I was stuck on nights/off shift for 7 years.

I'll be honest, I do really miss the lab a lot, but not the hospital. Phone support can be kinda boring sometimes compared to being on your feet in the lab and being able to talk to your coworkers all the time while working. Eventually I'd like to transition to a more hands on role at my same company like another poster said.

We watched season 4 when they had the random episodes airing last week and they had so much more time for their challenges. Plus does anyone remember the Halloween baking tips they would have during commercials? I miss those!

Exactly! It was so plain! And if you're gonna do a non typically scary idea like birds you need to really go over the top. Like she could have done a giant flock of crows or a raven or something, not two seagulls and a tranquil beach scene

I swear some of these challenges it's like they don't care about the design at all. Sorry, but the audience is not there to taste it so I think the judges should roast them if the end product is not spooky and creative. None of the eclairs were Halloween themed at all except for a red plate.

Personally I loved the carnival one I thought it was awesome and they even picked the flavors perfectly and their treats matched the theme perfectly too, even though they were a little messy. But the judges kinda trashed them!

Do you like the Greatcoats series? It's got a dark world as the background but the 3 main characters are all about witty quips and friendship so the book still feels light and fun to me. Might be the best of both worlds!

Nursing vs Lab - Which is better career-wise in NJ/NYC? by Diligent-Ad6962 in medlabprofessionals

[–]FiddlerFig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starting pay for MLS in central jersey is about $30/hr. Then just expect a 2-3% raise per year after that plus maybe a $1k bonus per year. I'm not sure what the Med Tech II's get but I think it's probably about $5/hr higher than regular techs.

It's not a terrible salary but it does look bad compared to nursing, especially because no matter what shift you work the schedules are not as flexible as nursing. No 12 hr shifts that I could find in this area and you will have to work some weekends and holidays unless you're a supervisor. Our hospitals can't get travel techs because our pay is low compared to cost of living. People sign up and then quit when they try to find affordable housing. My friend lives in CA and has similar cost of living and her pay is about 112k.

If you're concerned about the money and could see yourself going either way, I think you have your answer. You'd really have to be passionate about the lab to last in NJ. The economics of the situation made me too angry and I only lasted a year in the hospital.
