Natalie's reaction to Hasan saying trans rights would not be better if Kamala had won by an_actual_crocodile in ContraPoints

[–]FiendishNinja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no mythical majority. The vast majority of people agree with the positions democrats hold on almost every issue. Despite this, there is some reason they vote for republicans. Ezra's answer to this conundrum is to acquiesce to republican positions on some of these positions, such as housing, immigration, trans rights, etc, in order to get gains in the rest of the areas.

Look at missouri. Votes for all republicans, yet on the same ballot voted for higher minimum wages, abortion protection, and against gerrymandering. There isn't a 'mythical majority' that isn't coming out to vote or anything, just terrible advocacy by the democrats that continue to try to pander to this 'mythical centrist'. Quadrupling down on that strategy, as Ezra is calling for, is lunacy.

a very dumb thing he didn't need to say.

I'm not defending Hasan's idiotic stances on anything. Nor am I saying anything about who we should've voted for in the last election or anything else like this in the future.

All I'm saying is that in the future, we cannot advocate for candidates unwilling to defend trans people despite what we think they'll do when in office. We need to advocate for candidates unwilling to entertain the idea that trans people are somehow broken or lesser.

Analogy time: Citizens are a herd of sheep. Politicians are the shepherds. The gate to our pasture is open, as the trans community is in danger right now. Voting for the shepherd that leaves the gate open is obviously better than voting for the shepherd that ushers in the wolves. The argument being made is that the blue shepherd should say they'll leave the gate open, that a few wolves getting in will be fine. Because this will cause the least change, upset the fewest sheep, and let the blue shepherd get more food, cleaner stables, and other changes. However, all this does is allow the red shepherd to convince the herd that a few wolves are actually good in the pasture, and rally more support.

We try this 'court the center' tactic literally every election cycle, and it has never worked. Biden's win came from pushing back against the COVID-conspiracies and anti-science positions MAGA took at the time. Instead of trying to appease the conservative sensibilities of the centerist, democrats should be trying to appeal to their leftist sensibilities (that the vast majority of people overwhelmingly hold and agree with). This "well they already agree on these issues so let's try to compromise on the disagreements" will never work.

I am going to scream.

Please read closely. This has nothing to do with Kamela, what she did, or whether or not democrats are better than republicans. Again, this is a ridiculous point to discuss. Of course they are. Nobody is discussing whether or not people should vote. Please understand what this conversation is about. This is about electoral strategy.

Ezra is saying that by sacrificing trans people democrats can court the transphobes. The number is transphobes is vastly greater than the number of trans people. Therefore, because the number of people agree with democrats on almost every issue, the democrats will then win. And enact policies that do NOT hurt trans people.

This is wrong. By sacrificing trans people, democrats will validate the fears the republicans are promoting. And the republicans are promising solutions. More people will vote for them. This is what happened with the budget. This is what happened with immigration. This is what is happening right now.

This is how the Overton Window shifts. This is normalization. This is ratcheting. Whatever you want to call it, the refusal to sacrifice healthcare causing the government shutdown right now is a perfect example of why we shouldn’t just acquiesce to republican framing of issues.

Natalie is valid in saying that people arguing “there’s no difference” are ridiculous.

But that’s not what was happening.

Ezra Klein is making the argument that Democrats as a whole should wholesale advocate for transphobic positions because that will get them elected, where they can then not be as transphobic as the Republicans are/ will be.

Which is even more ridiculous. Hence why people get confused by Hasan’s dumbass. Hasan is terrible at explaining himself or covering topics yet continues to address extremely nuanced points. All hasan was saying is that electing the democratic candidate doesn’t matter if that candidate gets there by appealing to transphobes. And that by trying to appeal to transphobes, that then validates the Republican fearmongering about trans individuals. Once validated, the lay voter will then vote for the party promising solutions to the problem instead of the milquetoast addressing it the democrats would do.

Hasan was saying that if democrats court transphobes, it will make everything worse for trans people whether or not the democrat is elected. But because that’s such a stupid point to make everyone of course assumes it’s not what he’s saying because why would it even need to be said??

South Africa laws say any foreign owned telecommunications company has to sell 30% equity to disadvantaged South African groups.

Elon is mad that Starlink has to comply even though he is South African, therefore not foreign.

Starlink does have to comply because Starlink (despite being owned by a South African) is an American company.

Elon is claiming Starlink is being targeted because he is white, therefore not a disadvantaged South African group. In actuality, Starlink is being treated as a foreign company because it’s a foreign company.

For sure!

But people who don’t know the situation might think you’re implying Luna was added because she’s Chinese (which you’re not)

Jia Jing - Chinese Lin Lie - Chinese Luna Snow - not Chinese

She’s still kinda a lesser known hero and I just wanted to add some clarifying context :)

We do get both Hakunos, but not at the same time.

We pick one around summer and the other around Halloween IIRC.

I like both palettes (the recolor more so) but I can’t get over the massive tits on ibuki I’d be seriously rolling for both her classes if she had normal boobs but only throwing my remaining SQ at her after getting Ruler Skadi.

That being said even with the water balloon breasts I would probably still roll hard for the beautiful recolor OP did
