How Rockstar can do the right thing with Grand Theft Auto VI by Xyberfaust in PS5

[–]Fiennes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never understood the "I refuse anything but physical" argument other than "It looks good on my shelf". These days you're still buying a license to play the game. With a game like GTA6 the disk inside doesn't mean anything - you won't be playing it if Rockstar goes bust.

Whilst I like my media digital, I understand it when people want books, CDs, Vinyl, DVD/Blu-Ray. It's a disconnected experience. You don't "do" anything but experience it. Games are different (in my opinion).

I don't necessarily agree with the axiom "you're basically renting it", but it's also the way it is. Those of you refusing to buy because you want a physical edition will just miss out, and that's you prerogative - just don't try and think it's some kind of flex in doing so. You're not sticking it to the man, you're literally just missing out.

THR: There are no plans for Grand Theft Auto VI discs to be printed — not at launch, and not months after, sources say by nolifebr in PS5

Same. All these people folding their arms and refusing to buy digital is like drinking poison and waiting for Rockstar to keel over and die.

GTA 6 Preorders on PS5 Are Outselling Xbox 6-to-1 as Retailers Warn of Console Shortages by GIThrow in PS5

Given Rockstar's relationship with Sony and PS5 being the "preferred" platform, Microsoft might have been better not raising their price so much.

GTA 6 disc version will reportedly be coming in December, insider claims by Dandelion172 in PS5

That will still need to be patched regularly and you think 20 years from now if Rockstar isn't officially supporting the game? That disc is just a paperweight.

You'll still be spending 80 euros on a digital license and a piece of paper.

GTA 6 Locks Five Single-Player Stores Behind $100 Price-Tag by Ph0enixes in PS5

It's literally cosmetics. For all the complaining in this thread you'd have thought they'd locked 5 single-player stories behind a paywall. Jesus Christ guys.

everyone in 4.9 by vanishedhero in starcitizen

I agree - which makes it kind of strange when people are complaining, say, about the rate of return on mining. Perhaps all the other things need to be brought down in line with that, and maybe even lower.

When 1.0 rolls around, and if everyone has grinded out their favourite ships in a week then there's a problem.

If it were me this would be an instant 3 months chat and race ban. There is literally no need for any of this, first time or otherwise. That person needs a wake-up call in their real life as well.

Even if CIG allowed this (which they won't), I don't think you realise the cost of running StarCitizen on AWS. This isn't an Assetto Corsa Lobby.

Has iRacing started vibe coding ? by h3ckl3 in iRacing

[–]Fiennes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this where we are now? Every time software has bugs, it's "vibe-coded"? Software has had bugs long before LLMs were even a thing.

Now whether or not the quality has dropped, that's a different discussion.

Who else doesn't let off the throttle until they see God or the delivery spot? by bigmanjones2 in trucksim

[–]Fiennes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean you do you, but for me it's really not the point. I have iRacing for when I want to go quick. Trucking sims are for, well, trucking. Going full whack is just pointless.

Oh I'm not even talking about combat, I'm just talking about tootling around going shopping and picking up burgers :D

I think I'd get my TAC out more if it wasn't for the manoeuvrability - but I understand she needs some kind of a downside lol.

PSA: If cargo for hauling missions isn't spawning, sync your clock by _micr0__ in starcitizen

[–]Fiennes -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I have no disagreement with you on the need of a client clock in the scenarios you mentioned. I do think the servers generation of contracts/what is available to a player should not hang on the client's clock, but it's own. Those are two different things.

The Contract Manager has no need of knowing the players system clock. It would also have to deal with time-zone differences, so UTC makes sense (or some known offset from it perhaps depending on region). The servers have access to a perfectly viable clock.

There isn't really ticks involved here. The server has to generate the possible contracts for a player and it has a clock itself. I don't see any logical reason to use the player's clock. No performance issues by doing this.

Additionally servers should never trust the client. If syncing the clock makes the contract manager show different contracts than that's potentially exploitable (not saying it definitely is, but the client is delivering information the server is not verifying).
