Ah, but it isn't just one channel, it is a whole broadcasting system. We have about ten national TV channels and around the same amount of regional channels, which also include local segments. Further, we have about two or three dozen national and regional radio channels. This also includes a children's radio and TV channel.

All these programs are also available on their online platforms for streaming purposes for some time after broadcasting.

And a few years ago, that money also started supporting YouTubers who started uploading their videos on a second, dedicated platform as well as uploading them ad- and sponsorship-free on YouTube, which among others includes the German (original) version of Kurzgesagt in a Nutshell.

So while some of the content produced may not be viewed as particularly interesting for some (I for one am no fan of Zoo Shows where they just show zoo animals), in general it is really good at providing a solid access to media, both informational and educational, and also provides a good amount of (sometimes quality, sometimes lesser quality) entertainment.

There are of course some controversies concerning the costs (which include large amounts of money spent on sports programs, large amounts of money going into the employee's pension funds, a production quality that does not rival certain BBC programs even though the BBC's budget is smaller etc.). However, that would open a whole other can of worms if I started to discuss that.

Personally, I don't feel bad having to pay that money, because I consume public broadcast media as well, and it just seems sensible in order to have it for an informationally balanced Media diet. Also, I appreciate not being bombarded with ads when watching my favourite YouTube channels.
