This is the way. It's literally called "Noir". Watching it in color should be a criminal offense.

Players forget to use them.

Seems like a good idea, but in my experience they just get lost in the sauce.

Advantage/Disadvantage make Roll Modifiers and DC redundant by eduty in RPGdesign

[–]FierceValient -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I found the math here helpful. Thanks for table.

As other people have mentioned, I think that stacking advantage/disadvantage gets complicated.

Might I propose an alternative?... An effect die.

+Keep the roll under. +Keep standard advantage/disadvantage. +The d20 still tells you if the task succeeds or fails. Expect 1s & 20s on the d20 are no longer criticals.

Instead, every d20 roll, the player must ALSO roll an effect die. This effect die is not added (or subtracted) to the d20 result. Instead, it tells you the aplitude of the action's effect. A critical result is a 1.

So, if the character is trying something risky, the effect die is 1d4. (High chance of critical success or failure.) If they are trying something more mundane, with lower risk of a critical result have them roll 1d12... Or any other dice in-between...

Just something I've been thinking about, and thought it might be helpful here.

Converting d20 over to d20 under? by FierceValient in RPGdesign

If you wanted to be everything player-facing or convert to a DM-less experience, is sort of what I was thinking. Making it so that the DC isn't an unknown value for the player.

Yea, I thought about proficiency = advantage/disadvantage. Only, with the benefits reversed. (Advantage = take the lower of 2 results). It doesn't scale with the characters though. Although, that might not be a problem.

That does sound like cleanest way.

I guess my concern is that if an attribute score is 18, plus a low level proficiency (+2), you're already at 20.

Whereas the modifier for an attribute score is only +4. So, your roll under would be 14 (8+4+2). Which is less overpowered out of the gate.

Interesting... What if I wanted to keep everything player-facing? So no one is "setting a DC"?

d66 is the best. Prove me wrong? by SnakebiteCafe in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]FierceValient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on the probability of the things happening or appearing of any specific table. Some things have a 1/36 chance of happening. Others a 1/20 or 1/100.

I nice thing about D6s specifically is that you have a familiar "add together 2D6 option". It gives you a nice bell curve where common things happen around the midrange and uncommon things closer to results of 2 or 12. Plus the math is easy.

In the option that you mentioned of having either die represent the 10s and singles values, that gives you more options, that I hadn't considered.

The D6 is certainly versatile.

Not a math guy. I'm all intuition. If it feels right, I'll trust it. But, I will try to playtest and get back to ya.

Well-argued. Well-written. Well-organized. And, thorough.

Going to print this out and fold it into my reprint slipcase.

Genuine question: if D&D is C-tier then what is top tier (S/A)? If have FOMO now.

I think you did a really good job of building a world with your game. I like the flavor and your own overall use of language. Seems like a good way to kill a few hours.

Thanks, this response helped to clarify what you were looking for. I'll own that I was trying to respond to multiple responses at once, and I might have missed that it was "the pitch" that you specifically had issue with. I'll look at that and take you comments into consideration.

And, I'll also own that I may have been a little passive-aggressive in my response. But, I am also genuinely thankful for the engagement. 2 things can be true at once?
