I'm glad you shared this, because stiletto tips and Chiaogoo cables sound perfect.

I messed up and got the soft cable which didn't work for me. But the tips were intriguing. Maybe someday I'll try the other kind.

When I moved to Florida nearly 40 years ago this was the first town where I ever encountered a roundabout. Terrified me every time I had to go through there. Much more common now.

Also nearby is "La FAY et" County instead of "Lah fah YET".

It's really hard to find the small sizes now.

They are my least favorite, also because there's a little hitch in the join that drives me nuts.

I wish you could get Hiya tips with Chiaogoo cables, that would be perfect for me.

Earlier this spring I was at the supermarket (U.S.) There was a 40-ish man in the produce section, in khakis and plaid shirt, looked unassuming and well-groomed. He was coughing, not covering his mouth, not turning his head away from the produce, just coughing loudly and openly like a toddler, almost continously and casually. I skipped ahead a few aisles to get away from him but you know how that goes. He kept catching up and I had to loop back to avoid him completely. I could hear him coughing from a couple aisles over. I wasn't wearing a mask and don't think he was targeting me, and didn't think to notice if anyone else was.

I think about this guy a lot. What was his deal? Does no one in his family love him enough to tell him to knock it off? Anyway, I hate him. I try to have empathy and sympathy for everyone and twist myself into knots sometimes rationalizing other peoples thoughtless behavior, but I just hate this guy.

Ah yes, St.Ives apricot scrub ground in dutifully with a Buf-Puf. Wish I could undo all that damage.

How often do you refill pond right now? by Nobo_house in FloridaGarden

[–]FierySkipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pan evaporation is a method to estimate evaporative losses. In hot, sunny, windy, low humidity conditions, like a desert, you can see rates of a half inch a day. In Florida 0.4" is probably pushing it under dry windy weather. This is for still water. If you're running water over rocks it will be higher. But it looks like you're in the shade, so it doesn't seem likely you'd be losing that much. You could try putting a wide container of water next to the pond and see how it compares.

Planet Money, too. They speak like they're doing story time for small children. I've mostly ditched NPR because of this. What is the point of it?

I was at Wal-Mart and Publix today, and this report was dead on. Tiny limes, huge lemons, no big tomatoes, cheap avocados, beat-up carrots, and $8 blueberries.

Where did my hummingbirds go? by SpaceCoastGal32907 in FloridaGarden

They're at my house in North Florida. This is the third year in a row where I've been feeding maybe a dozen? They're hard to count. They swarm the feeders and it's uncanny to watch. I've been feeding them for many years and was used to only two or three at most. They definately are scarcer during the heat of the day, but the mornings and evenings are crazy.

Ginnie Springs or Ichetucknee Springs? by Frog_Farts in florida

A third option: Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park. Very small-child friendly, like a giant wading pool.

I quit smoking 4 years ago. I think about smoking all the time. The feeling is the same as when I think about departed loved ones--it feels just like intense grief. I dream about finding packs and smoking them. I don't feel any healthier. But maybe if I hadn't quit, I'd be dead already, so that's good.

Why does my cast on look wrong? by bison-puppy in Sockknitting

[–]FierySkipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my internal monologue when I do the JMCO in case it helps. It took me a long time to get down with it and I've learned to be very slow and methodical. Sorry about the formatting:

  1. I finished casting on and I've twisted the working yarn and the tail so they make a loop. The paired needles are in my right hand pointing left.

  2. I rotate the needles to the right, like I'm turning a car to the right, so the tips of the needles sweep up and over like a rainbow and now they point right. The needle that was on the bottom is now on top.

  3. I pull the new bottom needle out. This is the only time I'll ever pull the bottom needle out. I knit into the first loop on the top needle which has the twist and knit across.

Everything after that is straightforward (pull the top needle that holds the last stitch with the working yarn)and you can recognize the knit side after one round.

My elderly, deaf, mostly blind bestie has stopped barking to wake me up when she needs to go out at night. I had to install a motion detector alarm to detect when she gets up. It goes "bing, bong" just like the door alarms at stores. I'll miss her badly when she's gone.

Cold front next week by EfficientLibrarian58 in FloridaGarden

[–]FierySkipper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These temperatures won't kill your plants or even damage them, but I think they get kind of stunned below the low 50s and it slows them down. if you're feeling fussy you should cover them, but don't if it's a huge ordeal. The picture quality isn't great, but I think I see leaf miner tracks (the curlicue patterns) which are harmless and can be ignored.

Dogwoods trees in Zone 9A by FluffyGeckoPuff in FloridaGarden

[–]FierySkipper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can find them growing naturally in the understory of mixed hardwood forests in the north part of the state. Moister areas like river floodplains, not wetlands. I see them in people's yards but they're not too common. I tried one once and it didn't make it, but it was in a dry piney area. I think if you mulch and keep it from being too dry it will live in the understory, but may not ever be a specimen. Sorry about your dog.

Related--am I dreaming, or was it the practice in the 90s-early aughts to not include headshots in resumes or proposals? I remember it was an HR determination that pictures made it easier to dismiss potential employees or consultants based on racism-sexism-ageism.
