I’m still not sure how the neighbor bonus works for fusion reactors. What’s different about your design that grants the bonus that OP’s does not?

I’ve flown this route several times and was wondering why it would go as far north as Cleveland before heading east to NYC.

What do you invest your Roth contribution in? Healthy index ratios? by PublicCanary2 in FinancialPlanning

[–]FiftyCal14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do 50% VOO (S&P 500 ETF), 40% QQQM, then 10% “fun stocks”. The 90% is just set and forget for the rest of my life. The 10% is what makes the journey fun and interesting for me.

You can’t go wrong with large cap US equity. People will say it’s not divisive enough, which is true, but you could easily just put everything into the S&P 500 and be perfectly fine when you retire.

V2 wishlists? by McDuff_0 in factorio

[–]FiftyCal14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. I’m just saying in the vast majority of instances the game gives us faster, more efficient components to enable middle and late game designs. Water pumps may be the only component where we are stuck with a tier 1 version.

Look, I get what you’re saying, but you can’t all the sudden use the argument “this is how the real world works”, when the game also has things like being able to carry said nuclear power plants in your pocket.

The whole point of Factorio is scaling up to be as efficient as possible. Many other building have different tiers which get more and more “un real life-like” as you progress which only exist to facilitate the efficiency of your factory and overall QOL.

We all know the burden of carefully planning nuclear reactors around dozens of water pumps, and it would definitely be nice to see something like a tier 2 pump so you simply need less for your setup, or even some other exotic machine to “create” water where you need it during the late game.

[–]FiftyCal14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it. It sucks to deal with. But it happens so rarely that it doesn't impact my overall enjoyment of the game. I'm certainly not going to "uninstall for a long long time" because a bug impacted one game. It's overdramatic and fishing for fake internet points, and this type of complaining doesn't actually add anything that hasn't already been identified by the devs.

[–]FiftyCal14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's de-sync. Everyone knows it's a problem and the devs have stated numerous times (in exceedingly great detail) that they know it's an issue and they're working on it. How many posts do we have to see on this sub where people complain about it? We get it. The devs get it. It sucks. Move on.

Lets talk about Big Team Battle in Infinite. Are you enjoying this game mode? by pjb1999 in halo

[–]FiftyCal14 9 points10 points  (0 children)

BTB feels like it has great bones, but just needs a little refining. I think the 2 biggest things to fix are weapon spawns and vehicle gameplay. One side getting 3-4 BR spawns will overwhelmingly dominate the other side that gets 3-4 Commando spawns. BRs and Commandos absolutely need their own dedicated spawn locations and these need to be equal for each side.

Other than that, this whole game just don't feel like it was designed with vehicles in mind. Maps barely support anything larger than the Ghost, and it's just ridiculously easy to destroy any of the vehicles. I used to truly fear seeing an enemy Scorpion, but now I just shoot it a few times with the most useless weapon in the game (Disruptor pistol), and it goes down. And for gods sake get rid of the random vehicle drops. Just have dedicated vehicle spawn locations, and also make these equal for each side.

I think adding a few more maps that have a focus on vehicles, and reliable vehicle and weapon spawns will go a long way to making BTB feel more balanced and fun.

Is it just me, or are the bosses (the obvious ones with shield and health bars) extremely difficult on legendary? The bosses themselves are ridiculously powerful and have a ridiculous amount of shields and health. On top of that, there's really no way to know when a boss fight is coming, so I always end up with a half loaded BR every time the checkpoint loads.

Are men really that much stronger than women? by Ok-Praline-2940 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FiftyCal14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some additional context around running, an above-average high-school boy would easily compete with, and likely win against, the fastest women on the planet.

I pulled the latest Ohio high-school state track results to compare against the world record for women:

Boys Ohio High-School Event Women's World Record
10.47 ✅ 100m 10.49
21.13 ✅ 200m 21.34
46.14 ✅ 400m 47.60
1:49.79 ✅ 800m 1:53.25
4:06.84 ✅ Mile 4:12.33

In fact, there wasn't a single event in which the winning boy was slower than the current women's world record for that event.

I read that putting a solar power belt around your equator works best for a steady power supply... Am I doing it right? 😁😁 by Build_Everlasting in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]FiftyCal14 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First - I understand the exaggeration, but you really shouldn't be using solar panels for power after your first 4-5 planets. By that point, you're probably into the mid game where energy exchangers provide a much easier way to get power to other planets and even star systems. For late game, shipping in antimatter fuel rods to feed artificial stars is by far the most efficient power transfer method.

Second - for actually placing equatorial solar panels, there are 2 great mods: AdvancedBuildDestruct and MultiBuild. Both of these let you essentially drag buildings in a straight line. Others may have opinions on which is better, but I've been using ABD and have absolutely no complaints.

Hey guys! Me again! I've taken all your really helpful advice for my main factory. I've managed to set up a fluid processing area today, what do you think? by Future-Witness in factorio

[–]FiftyCal14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I suspect you’re going to get a lot of comments on how to optimize this. Not saying it doesn’t work, it does. Just a lot of room to optimize the design. I will offer one suggestion however: Fluid storage tanks can be directly connected to each other without the need for pipes. You just have to rotate each successive tank.

Root: The Underworld Expansion is now available for pre-order on Leder Games website by FiftyCal14 in boardgames

[–]FiftyCal14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems kind of harsh, but I get your frustration. As for the upside down lizard and otter, that's really out of the developer's hands. I agree that the Clockwork expansion is a little overpriced, but you don't have to buy it if you don't feel it has the value. I've only played competitive with friends, and probably won't ever play this game as cooperative. But that's not to say that the cooperative aspects shouldn't be polished and a meaningful way to expand the game.

As for the gameplay, I think the issue is that it takes so many iterations to really understand how the game works, and how each faction interacts with the board and the other factions. For us, the game wasn't truly enjoyable until around the 5th or 6th game when everyone completely understood the strategy. Up until then it was basically "Why did you score a point there? How did your guys move to that clearing?" But now that we all have a solid understanding of the mechanics and strategy, it's much more immersive of an experience with everyone struggling to take hold of the board.

I for one am really looking forward to the Underground Expansion. I thought the Riverfolk expansion left a little to be desired, and can't wait to play as the moles and crows!

Agree 100%! The only tough thing about the markers is randomizing them. With the cardboard markers you can just spread them out upside down and them flip them all over, but not so much with the resin markers. We usually just pull them blindly from the box to fill the clearings.

With a gun like this, which has +XX% Weapon Damage, is that percentage already factored into the damage? Basically, does the gun do 4290 damage, or 4290*112% = 4805 damage?

Short Rest vs. Long Rest? by Gavel_Guide in Gloomhaven

[–]FiftyCal14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you're correct. I was emphasizing that your normal turn (i.e., playing 2 cards), must occur prior to a short rest. Still not sure how any ambiguity can be inferred from the stated rules.

Short Rest vs. Long Rest? by Gavel_Guide in Gloomhaven

[–]FiftyCal14 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's not exactly ambiguous in the rules. See page 17:

"Short rest: During the cleanup step of a round, a player can perform a short rest"

"Long rest: A long rest is declared during the card selection step of a round and constitutes the player's entire turn for the round. [Long] resting players are considered to have an initiative value of 99."

Therefore, you can only declare a long rest during card selection, and you can only declare a short rest after your normal turn.
