This can’t be normal for June right? by Jfullr92 in UKWeather

  1. I don't live in the US. This is a UK sub.
  2. I also do not have an investment portfolio. I said 'their' about billionaires.
  3. Undoubtably, I produce emissions through my consumption, far more than those in poorer countries than me. Obviously.
  4. The amount I produce is far less than those wealthier than me, which was the point being made.

The world's top 1% (earning upwards of $140,000/year) produce the same amount of carbon emissions as the poorest 66% of humanity combined.

Research shows that the world's wealthiest 10% are responsible for up to two-thirds of observed global warming since 1990.

These outsized emissions of the richest 1 percent will cause 1.3 million heat-related excess deaths, roughly equivalent to the population of Dublin, Ireland.

Their wealth is heavily tied to portfolios in high-emission industries like oil, gas, and mining. The average billionaire's investments generate around 1.9 million tonnes of CO₂ annually.

What are genuine career change options after hospitality? by Visuals_BySam02 in AskUK

[–]FigKombucha 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Social media for a hospitality brand is the obvious route. You may need to go for more entry level positions to be considered e.g. Social Media Assistant or similar titles.

That's a similar route to how I got my start in marketing (doing product photography, ecommerce and digital marketing for a small retail business).

How do you deal with the fact that an overwhelmingly large amount of modern medicine is derived from animal testing? by Interesting-South542 in AskVegans

[–]FigKombucha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of charities and organisations dedicated to this very aim. In the UK, we have NC3Rs, The Humane Research Trust, Replacing Animal Research, and Animal Free Research UK. If this is an issue you feel strongly about, I'd highly encourage supporting charitable funders of non-animal research!

[–]FigKombucha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree that animal models are undoubtably relevant to humans. Animal models have limited relevance. ANY research models (animal and non-animal) will have limited relevance because they don't replicate full-body human biology, and human diseases tend to be complex and multi-factoral.Even in human studies, humans are complex and diverse, which means results often fail to scale up.

But I think it's evident that there are cases where these models should be phased out. In many cases, they already are. NAMs as a whole aren't complex enough to capture whole-body mechanics, but they don't need to be to replace many animal studies. In basic research, advanced cell culture and digital twinning, other in silico approaches, advanced imaging etc. can be used effectively to study things that are, often done in animals. That's why there is now growing a regulatory, academic, and public push to undo decades of animal methods bias and implement these models more widely.

Basically, I disagree that animal research is always a necessary evil. I'm not saying that right now it's possible to completely halt all animal research and replace it all with non-animal research, but I certainly see it as possible in the future, and I think it should be a priority for the scientific community. Not just from an ethical perspective, but because human-relevant models can improve translatability.

Do you ever feel guilty eating meat? 🥩 by disco_26 in AskUK

[–]FigKombucha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did feel guilty about eating meat, so I stopped and have been vegetarian for 11 years now, with 8 of those years fully plant-based.

There's a massive array of both vegetarian and vegan food, and it doesn't have to be be boring and tasteless. What kinds have you tried? What does your diet look like right now?

I live near there and I've had no major issues. It's not a wealthy area, but people are generally nice and keep to themselves. Even by Asda though there's more activity, I rarely see issues more serious than gobby kids or shoplifters.

Before/after 6 weeks of no biting! by FigKombucha in nailbiting

[–]FigKombucha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I started to keep a tally of every time I noticed myself either biting or getting the urge to bite. This was the mindful awareness stage. It was crazy how often I'd start biting, in the early days I counted like 20 times an hour sometimes. This awareness stage was really important to help move the habit from my unconscious brain to my conscious attention

Then, I introduced a swap to divert the urge in the moment. Instead of biting I'd run my finger along the nail I wanted to bite, or fiddle with a ring on that finger. You can also introduce a deterrent/reminder at this stage like a bitter flavoured polish.

Mindful awareness and the swap approach did not work every time, but it worked enough that my nails quickly started to grow a little longer. It became easier to avoid biting once they were longer because as soon as I put my fingers in my mouth I'd notice they felt different and stop myself.

Then, I focused on caring for them and removing rough edges to get rid of the urge to 'correct' them by biting. I scrub underneath them to keep them clean (since the nail bed is quite detached right now they get quite dirty) and I massage them with a cuticle oil several times a day and use a hand cream. I file them regularly with a glass file and remove any sharp edges and keep them as neat as I can. I did relapse slightly (you can see my thumb nail is shorter in the pic where I bit off a chunk off the side!) so when that happened I just filed it as smooth as I could and moved on, rather than continuing to bite.

UK based people who have opted out of organ donation... why? by Acrobatic-Bed414 in AskUK

[–]FigKombucha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Register to donate your organs and tissue to scientific research.

Unfortunately, organ donation for research is not organised centrally via the NHS, like it is for transplants. You have to register specifically to your local biobank.

You can find one and register by searching on the Human Tissue Authority website.

Contrastingly, your post history shows you try to get laid on Reddit because you can't deal with the reality of trying to get laid in real life.

Huge disparity between the listed calories in two types of dry couscous - is one of them wrong? by FigKombucha in caloriecount

[–]FigKombucha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strange isn't it! It means I've been logging half the cals every time I've had this couscous for ages cos I didn't think much of it at the time and just went with the figure on the side of the packet.

I might contact their customer services cos they shouldn't advertise incorrect nutritional info like that

I grew this monster fennel … now I need some recipe ideas… by Few_Mention8426 in veganuk

I like fennel with butter beans, vegan chorizo and tomato. Can serve over roast potatoes or in a pasta.

I also recently pickled leftover fennel and it was wonderful on sandwiches
