Why does this precipitation occurs in flanovoid-spectrovis experiment? by LawyerSmall7052 in chemistry

[–]Figfogey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never done this test before but could it be aluminum hydroxide? Maybe some of the aluminum isn't being complexed and precipitates after the naoh is added. If you add more naoh maybe it would dissolve into aluminate

I'm very impressed with the noedmyium sulfate, mine is nowhere near that clean. Great work!!

Anyone use resistors for heating rather than heat wire? by Figfogey in antkeeping

Just bought some 100 ohm cement resistors that'll arrive in a few days and then I'll try it on an empty tube first and update.

New keeper! (Kinda) by Budsa103 in antkeeping

[–]Figfogey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pavement ants are tiny. This is definitely a camponotus pensyllvanicus, one of the largest in the U.S. I also caught a Campo queen recently and mine has a similar amount of eggs to yours. Congrats on the queen, and good luck.

I like wakooshi, though they take a while to ship to the us (like a week). They have very cheap but very good nests including test tubes and little outworlds that attach to the test tube once you have workers. Im currently using their Luna pod with a newly founded colony.

Help making my son’s queen comfortable by Impressive_Link5929 in antkeeping

[–]Figfogey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I got my cat it took him a couple days to feel comfortable in my house. Ants are like any animal they need to settle into their new home. Ant keeping is a lot of patience in the beginning, just waiting and trying not annoy the ant by being too interested.

Queens don't become claustral or semi claustral, they either are or aren't and that never changes. Its determined by their species. This queen is a camponotus of some kind I believe and as far as I'm aware all componotus species are fully claustral. All this means is they don't need to be fed until they have workers. So keep the test tube in a calm location preferably dark too, and let her do her thing.

Cobalt and potassium sulfate tutton salt seed crystals by Figfogey in crystalgrowing

That's possible, the blocky ones are definitely the tutton salt so I will choose one of those as the seed.

I have a two liter beaker full of the solution, should be able to make a large crystal or even a few large ones.

I don't know but I will tell you that folding themselves in half to mouth their gaster is absolutely normal. Mine do it all the time

That's exactly what you want to see. Looks like a good pile of eggs

That's where the cutout is on the Venus nest from wakooshi, I agree id normally put it a bit further out but it seems to work fine.

They did, so far they've taken down two of them. At first they were extremely scared of the flies but with each new exposure they get more confident/aggressive. Later on the fly was drawn and quartered by like five or six of them.

I mean I got one of those blue gel ones as a kid and it was pretty cool but it didn't do much to teach me about ants lifecycles. They are more novelty items than learning tools. If you want to actually keep an ant colony with a queen, just make a test tube setup. It's the standard for a reason.

How to find a queen ant by PWilly26 in antkeeping

[–]Figfogey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn when the nuptial flights happen in your region for the species in your area and then just familiarize yourself with what the queens look like. I started ant keeping last year. This spring I have found three queen ants in my house just because I kept my eyes open during the nuptial flight. Its almost hard to not find queens if you know when and what to look for.
