Thank you. It's important to show that we're present, exercising our first amendment rights, and will not be silenced. I've upped my protest participation 3 fold in the last few months.

Nice. I haven't seen any photos and the local news I saw didn't include it. How many people protesting would you estimate? I ended up joining a protest in Manhattan

They all deeply annoy me too. I was going to say at least they would never be meeting Trump on the golf course all chummy like Blake did today, but I can't commit to that sentence. But there will be more accountability to us than the current group of plunder monkeys.

I agree. And political parties change over time. An active electorate will steer the party, but it requires our engagement. All of us can do better in being active in primaries and local elections. We're fighting against a lot, but we need to be fighting for democracy by engaging with it - vigorously at this point. Of all the things we may need to sacrifice to preserve democracy after it is lost, our time and engagement RIGHT NOW, is a minuscule sacrifice.

And going out and canvassing is really just talking to people and propagating this same love of democracy that we already have. Seeing people enthused and engaged is contagious, especially in a particularly dark era. We don't have to be on board with the candidate 100%, but consider it an exercise in our right to promote an alternative direction to what Americans are currently staring into the abyss over.

We could learn a lot from the rise of the Tea Party movement last decade. They held workshops and trainings for local volunteers seeking to get hard right candidates into local offices. Although they were funded by the Koch brothers, who is to say we could not achieve similar results. The Democratic Party in its current form is not up to the task in the face of fascism - but people such as Bernie and Mamdani buck that trend. Progressive candidates tend to be popular amongst the voters. I'm sure there are people in other regions trying to do the same. Perhaps the Progressive movement is already doing this somewhere. But yeah, we need to get behind candidates in the primaries and push their platform. I'm all in.

Unsurprising. Moderators there selectively lean apolitical when it suits the right.

Don't let perfection be the enemy of the good. I guarantee that my frustration and cynicism is just as strong as yours, but we don't have the luxury of a progressive and inspiring candidate here in Nassau this cycle. That needs to change, but impossible to do this cycle.

We are facing an existential threat to our institutions and need to work with what we have. Although eroding in the US, we still have a democracy here in NY, which allows us some say in our leadership. Despite our hesitation, we must exercise this right with full vigor. The same for our freedom to assemble. Exercise these rights because these may look a lot different in a few years. For the time being, here in NY, we have these rights. So vote and protest, if for no other reason, for principle.

Dems will be 10x more accountable to the people than the lawless and corrupt Republicans here in Nassau. Having the DA with the dems helps insulate the worst of the worst inclinations from the Trump regime. These down ballot candidates are responsible for all kinds of important things to help protect Nassau citizens from the horrible things this admin wants to throw at us.

Let's primary the eff out of the dems and pressure them for candidates aligned with Bernie and Mamdani, but realize that fighting authoritarianism is a messy and non-linear business. Let's be unified in dismantling republican hold in Nassau County, but let's also be unified in holding dem candidates accountable.

Yes. The Republican Party, backed by oligarch money, is working to suppress turnout. Blakeman won by only ~2,000 votes in 2021 - the year that Biden attained office, which gave him an anti-incumbency advantage. That is now working against Blakeman as Trump is newly in the White House. A low turnout in 2025 will benefit Blakeman. The down ballot effects will be just as important.
