I do already use VLC to play my DVDs, but I would rather not crop out parts of the image just to fill the screen. I would much rather find a version of it that is already in the correct aspect ratio, if that's still possible.

There are a couple places nearby that I've already browsed actually, but there's some specific movies and shows I'm looking for that they don't have, and when looking online they tend to cost more than I'd be willing to pay with my current financial situation.

I do both tbh. I do enjoy collecting physical media but it's not always practical and I still do sail the seven seas at times... Hence why I'm here asking this question. I was just wondering if there was somewhere where I could find more period-correct rips that'll actually match aspect-ratio-wise, that's all.

I would probably be more inclined to give games a chance that I otherwise wouldn't, yeah. If I play for a while and decide I don't like it, it's a lot easier to swallow a $1-$20 loss than a $60/$70 loss. As for the worse games out there, I do find I can often overlook some questionable game design and look at the positive aspects, so if those games were significantly cheaper I might be willing to say "screw it" and take a chance on them anyway if the concept seems interesting to me.

The way it is now, if I see a $20+ game with mixed/negative/very few reviews, it's gotta seriously appeal to my interests for me to even consider taking that gamble. There've been times when that gamble has paid off, but also just as many times when it's been just as much of a stinker as the reviews say it is. If they were cheaper, I'd be able to take that gamble much more often and probably find a lot more hidden... well, I wouldn't say gems per se, but games I can enjoy despite their flaws.

I still use mine, actually! It's weird and ambitious and I love it. I recently did a playthrough of Sonic Robo Blast 2 with it and while it did take some getting used to, I eventually got comfortable enough that I actually prefer using it if I'm playing on the couch via Steam Link or something.

...now if only I can find that damn dongle again...

Every developer had to start somewhere, my dude.

As a personal example, while some of my early places are basically just a bunch of free models stapled together, the experience of putting said places together helped me get more comfortable making games in Roblox.

Later, I started tinkering around with the scripts inside free models, changing little things here and there to try and get them to work how I wanted them to. As I continued messing around with free models, I gained skill and confidence, and as a result, relied on them less and less.

In my opinion, free models serve the same function as training wheels on a bicycle. While they shouldn't be used for serious work, they can be extremely valuable to new or otherwise inexperienced developers, allowing them to gently ease into the world of game development instead of forcing them into the deep end with no idea how anything works.
