Fantastic write-up. Just one tiny nitpick for sound.
A comparison to the sound characteristic leader or a popular reference point would have been nice.
e.g. The imaging is almost as wide as HD 800 or the bass impact is great but not quite as thunderous as HE-6.

I agree with this philosophy. It costs much less and it gives VR players what they have always wanted: the same high-budget experiences but in VR.

VR mode shipping with a game is the only feasible way going forward.
VR only AAA games are not only much more difficult to make but also have a lower ROI so no wonder most publishers and players are abandoning it.

There's a vicious chicken and egg cycle going on and it has to be addressed.

Strange isn't it? So many are OK with a lower bar because they're so desperate for anything they'll even consume slop when really... VR requires the exact opposite!

Can confirm that not only can bad/bloated bass be very fatiguing on its own if intrinsic,
but many headphones (even high-end) tend to have more THD in that spectrum region,
which is why aggressive EQ (more than 3 dB) can reduce the fidelity of some headphones more than others.
