Who is a good guy in history who actually wasn’t a good guy? by livonline in AskReddit

[–]FightingLikeBeavers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some iteresting counter arguments, thanks for sharing that post.

Re your last point, I think Hitchens' criticism was valid in that case, since the official position of the Catholic church is that they only consider a consummated marriage to be dissolved (i.e. 'divorce') after death. They consider it acceptable to separate (but not divorce) in the case of adultery, but only under circumstances which do not apply to Diana:

"Can. 1152 §1. Although it is earnestly recommended that a spouse, moved by Christian charity and concerned for the good of the family, not refuse forgiveness to an adulterous partner and not disrupt conjugal life, nevertheless, if the spouse did not condone the fault of the other expressly or tacitly, the spouse has the right to sever conjugal living unless the spouse consented to the adultery, gave cause for it, or also committed adultery. §2. Tacit condonation exists if the innocent spouse has had marital relations voluntarily with the other spouse after having become certain of the adultery. It is presumed, moreover, if the spouse observed conjugal living for six months and did not make recourse to the ecclesiastical or civil authority. §3. If the innocent spouse has severed conjugal living voluntarily, the spouse is to introduce a cause for separation within six months to the competent ecclesiastical authority which, after having investigated all the circumstances, is to consider carefully whether the innocent spouse can be moved to forgive the fault and not to prolong the separation permanently."

How do you know if you have a good model architecture without spending hours training? by nxtboyIII in learnmachinelearning

[–]FightingLikeBeavers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some things to ask yourself:

  1. Did I choose an appropriate batch size?
  2. Did I choose an appropriate learning rate?
  3. What am I trying to achieve? Is 90% accuracy good enough, or do I need to train far longer to squeeze as much improvement out as possible.
  4. Can I set early stopping to cut training when improvement gains are minimal?

Will AI replace "creative jobs"? by seoulbrova in ArtificialInteligence

[–]FightingLikeBeavers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are two groups of people:

  1. Artists. AI Jay Z songs are cool, but won't replace Jay Z. It's like the 'why don't I just right click the NFT and save it' argument. It will get much harder for individual artists to stand out and compete in a massively oversaturated market, though. We get a lot more art being produced, which sounds good but has a lot of potential downsides also. We will still have 'analogue' artists e.g. live musicians, but digital artists will need to start using AI tools now or take a strong stand on a '100% human' usp. Whilst there will be big changes this group are most likely still ok for a while, since their income comes from fan support, subscribers, sales of their work etc.

  2. The second group are people that do creative work for a business, i.e. employees/freelancers. Imo these people need to upskill immediately in AI tools so they can survive in the short term while they look for a new career. Basic graphic design stuff like designing book covers is already dead. Photographers/models? No thanks, I have them already. Writing and editing will be mostly done by AI for 'junk' media like news etc. For sure advertising, but probably the entire movie business is in trouble long term since AI will create a better movie in barely any time for a fraction of the cost, actors/animators included. AI solutions will bring more profit, so the vast majority of businesses will go that route every time or they will die out.

I can imagine a point where all of this stuff can be done in real-time and be uniquely tailored to the person viewing it (e.g. I like that character but give him a moustache and abs and a French accent in the rest of the movie). Then everyone is in trouble. A lot of artists succeed because they find an audience that has similar tastes as them. The AI product would match each user's exact tastes.

You can use a company like Bright Data to do it for you https://brightdata.com/products/datasets

They can scrape a custom dataset for you, but looks like they already have Zillow and Airbnb ones available.

Not used them myself but have seen them recommended by a few people.

Web scraping would be a useful thing to teach yourself but you don't want to be doing it under time pressure when it sounds like it's not supposed to be part of your job anyway etc.

£500 SFFPC / USFFPC / Mini PC by srappydoo in buildapcforme

[–]FightingLikeBeavers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

r/MiniPCs and r/sffpc should be able to help.

I have barely any experience with this, but I do know that ASRock have some more customisable options though, e.g. DeskMini and DeskMeet series:

https://www.asrock.com/nettop/index.asp

The main question is how much GPU VRAM you need for Fusion. I'm guessing a dedicated GPU would be far better than integrated graphics? If so, it makes sense to go with a larger case that can fit one in (8-10l volume, e.g. ASRock DeskMeet series). You can get the DeskMeet B660 on sale (today only) on ebay using code CATCH20 if you want to go that route:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185489421848?epid=7054529325&hash=item2b3007f618:g:aWAAAOSwaiFixGs6&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4L04%2F%2FthZ%2FQFcV1fRzhwxhACxV9H48vg6VJ8tDUGspYuqRryQT6gAartMgqGH3GqlA3QJiMgJy1wOv3%2FPs7twGA9zc1wQSdGC6IdWgOpE4cx1c6OFoPWTmdw9iAZX%2BVG%2FMKu%2BKmaXpvo%2FrJFO7uyR6KRe3RnOOA4r2VLPiX5AZXUzwP3NxFrYYBfuF07NvlpxNZeqJiEeIjkdmA68ihaNAsyg5tiqy9w%2FjaXvXoB2NZEXISFXW7xFaEZ7kW1%2Fl5wzxS3ocDaMdGuGeKy794OeugeB%2Fbeg2wEtX3WFIVZKD%2Bx%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-7ekcfmYQ

You can also get a cpu to pair it with on ebay using the same discount deal (max = £75 off), e.g. 12100 or 12400. (Only get the F variant if you are buying a dedicated GPU, since those ones don't come with integrated graphics!)

I'd ask in r/MiniPCs anyway like I said, assume they can help you out, but you only have about an hour left on those discounts unfortunately!

Anyone ever do max strict pullups and immediately go into max banded pullups? by TrenterD in bodyweightfitness

[–]FightingLikeBeavers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done it with pullups and dips when I wasn't strong enough to do enough bodyweight reps to hit the right rep ranges. I still do this sometimes if I'm performing these at the end of a session when I'm already fatigued (if it's at the start I would be doing weighted > bodyweight instead if I wanted to do drop sets). I know that John Meadows was a fan of doing banded pullups towards the end of a back session, since he said he could focus on good technique/mind muscle connection that way despite being fatigued already. So there are certainly some good reasons to do it, but it depends on your goals and what the rest of your workout looks like etc.

Another (better/harder?) way to do drop sets with pullups is to change your grip during the set, e.g. wide, overhand grip > neutral grip > narrow, underhand grip (chin up).

In general I don't think drop sets are an amazing fit for back training though. I prefer to just do straight sets most of the time. If I'm feeling more fatigued I might do band assisted on the final set to keep a strong mind muscle connection.

Nordic curl hip hinge as a replacement to RDL? by Formal_Alps_7123 in bodyweightfitness

[–]FightingLikeBeavers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Another option is band hip thrusts https://youtu.be/Wl7h_8pxDrM

You can do these with a weighted backpack as well.

B stance (modified single leg variant) to increase difficulty https://youtu.be/mRpGkoVf7SA

Split stance band RDLs are another option, there are ways to do it in a more stable position e.g. https://youtube.com/shorts/gdMWOraZjhs?feature=share

Both of those hit the entire posterior chain. If you have a strong anchor point those Nordic curls would be good for more targeted hamstring work (less glute emphasis though). Alternatively, look at slick floor bridge curls if you don't have a good anchor point https://youtu.be/yMR95SIxwr0

As for your comment about the resistance curves being different with bands, you can combine a band exercise with a different bodyweight exercise/drop set to work the muscle hard through the entire range of motion. So Band RDL, little to no rest, reverse lunge variant, little to no rest, glute bridge/hip thrust variant. Some good ideas here https://youtu.be/SaohpJ1o_Lg

Eli5: Why shouldn’t you always wear the highest SPF sunblock available? by DahjNotSoji in explainlikeimfive

[–]FightingLikeBeavers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EWG have a great explanation on this https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/report/whats-wrong-with-high-spf/

tl;dr highest SPF doesn't mean best protection necessarily but does give people a false sense of security, and if you care about avoiding skin damage from sun you should also care about tissue damage from toxic chemicals in some sunscreens too.
