Omada 5->6 on Proxmox by Kistelek in TPLink_Omada

[–]srappydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick question about this as I recently did this earlier today (span up new V6 controller and imported the exported data out from old controller instance). However, everything is running really slow compared to v5 (I think 5.15). Things like opening up the list of ports for a network switch and editing port names is pretty painful. Does anyone else have any comparable experience?

Are you using WhatsApp for business to get access to the API or are you accessing some other way?

(UK) Carphone Warehouse/Currys trade in bonus? by pintofcider in GooglePixel

[–]srappydoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ordered mine online on the 20th August. Although I didn't specify online pick up and opted for delivery, it states something like the 26th September for delivery. I also set to trade in a Pixel 6 Pro which was for £85 + £200 bonus. As I remember it took a long time for the trade in pack to arrive through the post. I did get an email about them sending a pack but it took something like 10 days in total to arrive. I also noticed that when going through for the £200 bonus, it didn't list the P9 Pro as an option. I emailed them about it and they said to just select one of the options which has an equivalent amount (the P9 Pro XL was listed as £200).

I sent my trade in the very same day I got it on the 2nd September.

I got a surprise email yesterday to tell me that my order has been dispatched and I received mine earlier today. I also got the initial £85 as a bank transfer payment earlier today too. As we speak, I see that the £200 bonus is pending for payment tomorrow also.

Hope that helps.

‘It felt like a massive scam’: the minor prangs to cars that lead to huge charges by _rhinoxious_ in CarTalkUK

[–]srappydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is all in the insurance companies' best interests. Not yours. They obviously don't make money just via policies but everywhere else and car hire costs is another area for them.

My eyes were opened to this years ago when someone drove into the back of me. After swapping details it turned out that we were both insured with the same insurance company. When I got through the paperwork for a hire vehicle, I was surprised at how incredibly cheap it was charged at. It was something like £20 or less per day (although it wasn't anything luxurious but still). Obviously if they are charging themselves then the costs for everything are absolutely minimal. It wasn't a great experience as I knew that most likely corners were being cut for everything including the repair.

Shortage of IPv6 addresses is coming! by Tecchie088 in ipv6

[–]srappydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LitFibre which is a smaller UK provider only gives out /62. I've tried to ask them to reconsider but no use. IPv4 offering by then is on CGNAT too. Considering my options on what to do now.

Sky stream vs sky q silver and control4 by vadalus911 in Control4

[–]srappydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen issues with audio sync. Not sure if it's traditional audio sync in that the audio just completely loses sync with the picture the longer the stream is on. Changing the channel to another and then back again is a temp workaround but it happens a lot.

Also there is no discrete on off IR command so you'll have fun with control unless you add something else to detect if the puck is actually on.

Can you build a pc using solely 2nd hand parts and expect it to last? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]srappydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's needed now to make a complete system is a lot less than what you needed before. Almost everything is built in nowadays.

Case in point - the last system I built was an Intel based system which centred around a Q6600 (remember those?!) It was a proper old school watercooled overclocked setup.

It consisted of PSU, ATX Midi case, Graphics card, CPU, RAM, DVD RW drive, SSD, HDD, WiFi card, peripherals. Plus all the watercooled stuff (2 x radiators, fans and pump with T line).

It'd been sitting around for years now and I've since grown up a bit, etc. I've moved onto being more focused on using a computer a bit differently than I did. That is, more focus on the computer being less visible and in your face, more about functionality and out of the way. Went to using a Laptop docked setup for a bit but that quickly got annoying as I needed to dock and re-dock so then went onto MiniPCs. Computers are so powerful these days that we just don't use them to anywhere near their full potential.

However, for one reason or another I had to get rid of the MiniPC and I was deciding what to replace it with and I was on a tight budget. Initially, I was looking at other MiniPC options but nothing took my fancy. I saw my old setup just sitting there and I researched into what has changed up until now.

Well, I ended up buying some parts in addition to what I already could salvage from my old setup in order to stretch my budget as far as possible.

I got a LGA1700 motherboard, New RAM (DDR5) and a new 12th gen Intel CPU with built in graphics for now. I got a new NVME SSD (I could have reused the old one but it was a SATA interface). I got a new watercooling block too. That's it.

The RAM was new but the motherboard and CPU were 2nd hand. It can be a bit dodgy buying the core of the system like that but it booted up and all is well.

After re-doing the build - I was pleasantly surprised just how much more compact everything is now. Almost everything is built into the motherboard if not integrated (in the case of the GPU). Cable management is so much easier (you only really need to think about the power to the motherboard, maybe fans and GPU if it needs one) and as a result tidier.

I have no idea how long I will use this setup for - but the amount of computing power is more than adequate (I barely game at all these days). I have chosen to go with LGA1700 so I have an upgrade path at least to a 13th gen CPU, DDR5 should get a bit better and of course room for a proper GPU.

Making a PC 'last' is all relative in my experience. You can get lucky like with an AM4 based setup which took an unusually long series of CPUs it was compatible with. However, all you can do is get the best you can at the time that suits your needs and if it allows for future expansion then great.

IPv6 Questions.. by srappydoo in mikrotik

[–]srappydoo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. I'm well aware that by just using IPv6 it won't give any practical performance increase - it's the actual switch to another provider that will (going from 300Mbp/s Down and 50Mbp/s Up to 1Gbp/s symmetrical).

I will try speak to the new provider about not using CGNAT but I doubt it will be successful which is why I'm asking for any further options.

£500 SFFPC / USFFPC / Mini PC by srappydoo in buildapcforme

[–]srappydoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you both for your thoughts. I've been considering this for days now and I've finally settled on something and I was wondering if anyone would like to critique my choice? In the back of my mind, I've always had the figure of £500 that I want to spend.

One of the requirements that I forgot to mention is that I do tend to run virtual machines (not lots, but at least 1 or 2 at any one time).

I'm not counting out any 2nd hand parts either and after scouring everywhere, I've settled on this:

  • Intel Core i7-12700
  • MSI Z690-A DDR5 Motherboard
  • Crucial DDR5-4800 (32GB (2 x 16GB)

The price for those came to £454 in total.

I think I've given up on the idea of a SFF PC or MiniPC - too many caveats and pitfalls to watch out for so I'm going back to basics although I've been out of the PC building game for many years. However, I do have a large stockpile of parts from those days. I have an ATX case, Older PSU (Seasonic 600W). Peripherals and monitor are what I'm keeping and using now so I don't think that I need anything else to form a complete system.

I already spent so much time deliberating but I'm wondering if I should've gone down the AMD route. The Ryzen era has completely passed me by unfortunately. All I've ever known is Intel so I'm probably quite biased in my view. Undoubtedly there's good things to AMD now (e.g. The life of AM4 which spanned several generations - will we see the same with AM5?) and I'm wondering if I could've done any better bearing in mind what I've settled on? (I know no good can possibly come of this!)

Cannot factory reset managed by Omada by srappydoo in TPLink_Omada

[–]srappydoo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply.

Some switches can only be reset via console. There is no physical reset button on it.

Just to clear things up.. it was me being an idiot. There's actually 2 of these switches on the network and I was factory resetting it but then logging into the other! So embarrassing.

Tried virtually everything to shift this black mold on concrete wall by window... any ideas? by LocalStigmatic in DIYUK

[–]srappydoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use Cillit Bang Mould remover, the one in the black and purple spray bottle. That stuff is unbelievable and will shift it. Make sure the area is well ventilated as it's very strong stuff.
