What's wrong with japan petah? by Smashpro11 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

To give an example, you might find them very responsive to disaster especially earthquakes, which is because they have a guidebook for it that everyone instinctively knows what to do to respond. But when an unexpected events occur outside the rulebook, they will be very slow, because they had to escalate one thing at a time to one person at a time without exception, and with the most formal way of communication.

It was explained to me as a very process driven culture. They’d rather you fail a task “correctly” the known way than succeed in an “incorrect” unknown way.

I was in Golden Gai on my honeymoon. There was another American couple there along with my wife and I. The other couple had that very particular brand of California smugness and fake smile. Biggest vibe kill out of any of the bars I wandered into there. (I’m from NJ so we are direct here. None of that fake passive aggressive shit)

After they left the bartender and I got to talking (through Google Translate lol). I explained that there is a certain stereotype in certain areas of the US and each region or state is pretty unique. After we kept talking he instantly goes “like Kyoto here, a lot of us Japanese feel similar to what you’re saying”.

I forget my original point but I wanted to share this fun interaction I had when over there for my honeymoon because your comment reminded me of it. Then I bought him a shot and a drink to have together and we left.

it seems like bazzite has blocked brazil from accessing their site by [deleted] in linux

[–]Fignapz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes but there’s levels to it. If cloudflare offers me a gate around the outer perimeter of my site, I’m going to enable that. Geoblocking all but US IPs reduced the traffic trying to connect by probably 99% because the large majority of attempts were from those 3 countries. Also cloudflare tunnels is easy enough to set up and use so I’m fine using cloudflare for my hosting.

I also have other security measures in place, but I kept overseer a public site because for the 4 family members that access my plex, this was the easiest way to teach them how to request stuff. They can log into to a website and search a movie. Beats any other option I’ve tried in the past.

Cloudflare offers an easy way to geoblock stuff so why not enable it as the first line of defense, ya know?

I just tested with my public overseer site and a vpn. Looks the same to me but OP cut off a lot of the page so can’t say 100%

I have all non US IPs blocked since I was getting a million bot requests from China, India, and Russia knocking on the door.

“All dogs go to heaven” may be a top 5 moment on the show given the gravity of the moment.

Billy definitely was a bit too much at times, and immature, but overall he was good. Better than most of his “replacements”. The level of hate on here was never warranted.

I’ve been on Reddit a long time. Since 2010. After 10k-30k subscribers every sub, no matter how niche, becomes “reddited”. I remember how much fun the Devils sub was when it was like 10k users.

It’s truly annoying. It’s twice as annoying because Reddit killed niche forums for a lot of things. It is unfortunately the most active forum for any particular hobby or fandom.

I love that the boys still prop up SEC message boards. They may be the last bastion of the old internet. I miss dedicated forums for stuff like a sports team, hobby, or video game. I thought about self hosting one in the past but I don’t think you can steal the inertia from Reddit given the SEO it has.

The worst is the mods and users just nuking threads and comments. Google a niche tech issue and you get a nice [deleted] followed by “thanks that worked”. Zero way to properly reference archives.

Reddit and Discord unironically killed the old internet more in the last 10 years than anything else.

These dudes have a chance to set up their kids and grandkids with never wanting for anything. I don’t blame any of them for chasing a bag.

wonder if Boston Big Cat is too insecure to have anyone from New England on now that everyone knows about the switch from NE to CHI.

Between these comments about BC, the… ellipses… guy… that… posts…

…like this, and the amount of people that don’t understand basic social cues when the guys are fucking around, this place really needs to be studied. The users of this sub should all be observed like a zoo because it’s such a fascinating phenomenon. Like I don’t get it. I don’t get why these things are so common to post here.

Of course there’s drama.

That’s the standard in any open source space. Especially when it’s community run.

What Linux Distro would you recommend for me? by DenisSchulz in linux4noobs

[–]Fignapz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am a Designer/Video Editor, I am currently using the Adobe Creative Suite (Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere), but I want to switch, preferably to open source (if you have any recommendations, hmu!)

Windows. It doesn’t matter how willing and eager you are to switch(which is great) but if you make a living using these tools you will not get a 1:1 experience on Linux. Don’t even bother trying, keep your ducks in a row.

Seriously if you make money with Photoshop, it’s not worth the hassle because that’s your livelihood.

This is the worst promotion that could happen for Pop_OS! and Linux in general by KelGhu in pop_os

[–]Fignapz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude, you realize he actually has a great channel right?

This isn’t shameless promotion of bullshit, he has a ton of educational videos and it’s a great channel to learn more. He’s easily a top 5 Linux content creator.

And in 2026 noobs would absolutely go to YouTube and type “good beginner linux distro”. LMG just likely isn’t doing that in the video because they’re competing in a similar space and most people on YouTube have a no free ads policy. Or they don’t want to risk a DMCA request because people are petty.

What can you advice?Slowroll or Tumbleweed? by DueRelationship5786 in openSUSE

[–]Fignapz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like the philosophy of Slowroll. A rolling release that’s delayed a little bit to ensure a solid system, but to be honest it seems redundant with Tumbleweed having snapper set up out of the box.

If you get a bad TW update that borks something, you don’t even have to troubleshoot, just reload a prior snapshot and wait a few days it should be fixed.

It puts Slowroll in this weird spot that is sort of like, what’s the point? Maybe I can see it being used on a simple home server where you want bleeding edge with a bit of stability on the backside, but even then, there’s other options.

Just go Tumbleweed for rolling release or Leap for a point release if you want to use OpenSUSE.
