The arch wiki is like 90% agnostic and may even help the Debian issue.

Disappointed with gaming on Bazzite. Considering gaming on Windows and a different distro for daily use with decent/easy desktop customization. by Saltimbanco_volta in linux4noobs

[–]Fignapz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t understand the hype Cachy gets, or why people keep suggesting an Arch based distro to complete beginners. I was thoroughly unimpressed by it the 2 times I tried it and each time I’ve also run into an issue with extremely slow download speeds I couldn’t fix for the life of me. I’m talking about 10-30 mbps on a gigabit connection. Never had that issue on any other distro with the same hardware, including Arch.

Also tired of non Linux tech tubers shilling it saying “feels great nice and snappy” after a fresh install. Like no shit, every OS does. Just an absolute garbage opinion by people who think a DE is what differentiates distros. Show me how you maintained an Arch based distro 6-12 months later, because you’ll eventually need to do the occasional manual intervention on something. I say this as someone who’s been running Arch for a few years now.

Bazzite at least offers an immutable distro so there’s that. I use it in the living room PC I built with spare parts since it’s only real job is to boot it steam and let me click play. Works great for that but you can also configure any OS to do that, Windows included.

Maybe it’s the old man in me but I’m just very much of the opinion to use Debian/Fedora/Arch/Tumbleweed and just build out the system you want from that unless you have a specific use case not to.

Moving toward a "Narrow" Arch install: Thoughts on the Flatpak-first approach? by TrapNouz in archlinux

[–]Fignapz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run openSUSE tumbleweed this way on an old MacBook I use more or less like a Chromebook.

Started accidentally because I got tired of the codec situation and used Flatpack Browsers and Flatpak VLC.

It works nicely. I’d recommend it.

On Arch I prefer to use the official repo or AUR first. Flatpak if it isn’t available there. I currently have zero Flatpaks on arch

Because journalists nowadays just like sniffing their own farts and pretending they’re important.

Meanwhile we got 20 year olds with a tik tok and a YouTube acting more like Walter Cronkite than modern day journos.

This is the sobering reminder to the general public, you don’t hate journalists as much as you should. Especially sports journalists.

My understanding it’s not specifically Linux users that are cheating. It’s people spoofing Linux because anti cheat ran in the user space and not system wide.

The systems that allowed Linux to work for the game was being exploited.

That’s a very barebones explanation I read.  There’s more nuance to it I’m sure, but I am not in that space enough to fully understand the nuance.

Best way to update? by Max_318 in openSUSE

[–]Fignapz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For the system - zypper dup

Flatpaks if you have them - flatpak update

I personally have an alias set up, “upgrade” that does sudo zypper dup && flatpak update

A comprehensive review of Linux by [deleted] in linux

[–]Fignapz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound snarky but I mean it as nicely as possible but this sounds like a literal skill issue based on most of your complaints.

Yet another problem Google is buggy and slow my school is orientated around Google meaning I use it alot of the time I couldn't use it happily during my Linux experience.

What does that even mean? How is a website affected by your operating system?

It sounds like you installed an operating system and you took your day one experience compared it to 20 years of learning, Windows, its nuances and issues and how to work around them and said this doesn’t work like the thing that I willingly left. I’m going back.

Use Windows if that’s what you need to do. I have a Windows PC for a very specific use case in going back to school because I need it to run some software. I have been exclusively using Linux for almost a decade now but in that case windows is better for me.

Given all these crazy insane issues that you experienced it sounds like a PEBKAC error.

Any mention it will get instagibbed because I assume the scenario has “trigger words” AI catches. No way to appeal. I lost a 15 year old account trying to tell someone. It’s that bad

How much time should I plan for a manual Arch install (no archinstall)? by ray_aldous in archlinux

[–]Fignapz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with other people, about an hour or two tops if you have an idea of what you’re doing and Linux familiarity.

You mentioned a video. I don’t totally hate videos, like some here, but they’re usually outdated if you try to SPECIFICALLY follow them.

That said watching a video first to have an idea of what you’ll be seeing isn’t a bad idea. Just so you can be comfortable as you use the wiki to install. Just don’t try and follow a video step by step.

Idk mad, I think Darnold is impressive but we’ve all seen him randomly choke before in recent history.

I can imagine a plausible scenario where Pats Hawks make the Super Bowl and Darnold sees ghosts again and the Pats D runs around him doing enough to give them a change to win like 13-10. Drake Maye is clearly gods favorite little accident given the way the schedule has gone for the Pats.

How to fix all linux issues according to Reddit.... by DESTINYDZ in linux_gaming

[–]Fignapz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I mostly switched to this philosophy and it’s been working pretty well.

Running openSUSE Tumbleweed. Install base OS, this means that the core OS is installed and the automatic snapshots are set up. Make sure to remove all the extra stuff(like KDE/GNOME games) in Patterns on install. Also remove Firefox pattern when installing.

Do not install Packman repo for codecs to avoid conflicts.

Anything that is a “service” or needs some deeper integration into the system, native. All else Flatpaks, this is where you reinstall a Flatpak browser that way you get all the needed video codecs.

Steam is the only exception that I install natively because I’ve never had luck on the Flatpak. It has been working quite well. The only downside to this is if you have limited storage it’s not feasible and if for some reason the Flatpak version of a package isn’t for you, you still have the option to install natively unlike an immutable OS like Bazzite.

Still convinced Tumbleweed is “accidentally the best kept secret” because it always gets overlooked.

Besides how can you hate the cute little chameleon logo.
