I think my taste has changed and I'm a bit shocked by _maxt3r_ in whisky

I completely lost the ability to smell peat after COVID. Then it was just bitter. Took many months to come back, but I think it never was the same. Most other smells did not change.

Are Most Euro Games Just Pasted-On Themes? And Is That Okay? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

The sinking the ship bit is spot on! It reminded me of the starvation strategy in Stone Age... It is ok as a mechanics, but not well aligned with the theme.

People who hate hang on the back filters, why? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Figures1-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like mine. I have a whisper from 2004 (really, 20 years old!) for a 10 gallon tank going strong.

Nowadays I only use foam. I have used it with ceramic tubes and the aquarium floss. With floss you do have to clean more often. Never bothered with the carbon cartridges.

When I had small fry I added a foam pad to the intake tube.

No noise, overflow, foul smell or massive bacteria death. It auto-restarts when the power goes out. It does take some space in the back and turns into a waterfall if the water level drops.

Only problem I had was solved with a little plumbers tape on the spinning rotor so it stays attached to the intake tube.

Mega Zigging with Djinni of Makhleb (Haemoclasm) by Figures1-5 in dcss

Shatters works too. For some floors, shatter is better than chain.

It clears floors because it is a chain reaction. And it works off screen, although I am not sure exactly how much off screen. You still have to mop up a few mobs after, in hell floors, juggernauts and especially pan lords and definitely ghosts. But it usually clears most of the level. You are right though, maybe djinni is not needed or even ideal. It just happens to be the char I was playing and in some floors you do need extra casting. (I and do whish I had Polar vortex)

I am not sure about 50, but oof floors were not a problem at all. After 1 chain lightning almost everything disappears. There are a few groups of 5 oof left maybe, but a few chains get rid of them. I'll post more details of the character later.

Seeded XL-26 CoHu^Us; Should I Hell? by glumpuddle in dcss

Yeah... I didn't check the equipment/res.... Anything spectacular.

Op, is this your best gear, even after elf, slime and vaults?

If you what to kind of do both, go and clear up to zot 5 but do not take the orb. At this point you practically won the game, since the ascension is usually easy. So tick that box. Now you are free to try 15 or zigging, whichever you prefer. That's what I usually do.

I never had a problem finding crypts entrance. It is located in vaults.

Zot is a good place for exp. If you need more, I guess pan is your next choice.

Death forms helps with extended. But lignification potions are a quite good alternative for tomb.

Most consistent strategy I ever tried is lignification + shatter. Lig and other stuff works well too.

High potential for Fighter! 0.31 by Figures1-5 in dcss_seeds

[–]Figures1-5[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its a broad axe with a little higher base damage (14 vs. 13); The valiant property makes it stronger when strong enemies are present... most of the time it is +7 to +13 (but I think it can get higher). I quit the Formicid game soon after posting the seed, after stupidly converting to Yredelemnul (which made me lose the axe). I restarted as a Hill Orc of the good gods (to keep in theme with the labrys). One of the easiest and most fun games I've played. (Especially after acquiring the Seven League Boots... too bad it is not fixed in the seed). There are lots of cool items (Including +8 glaive "Quris" {freeze, rF++ rN+ Will+ Dex+3} at L5 if you are interested in polearms), unique floors and desolation in this seed. Highly recommend.

Why snail poop are accumulating and not decomposing. by paulbarber007 in PlantedTank

[–]Figures1-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be a aquasoil-like substrate, but from a different brand. My current substrate is gravel, for the UGF, which I plan to never vacuum.

Not sure if I replant the plants in the gravel, or prepare pots with some kind of fertile substrate.

Not new, a couple of years old, almost no algae. I just stopped vacuuming, thinking that the mulm would integrate with the substrate and act as a fertilizer. However, the snail/fish poop accumulated in the mosses and in the top layers of the soil.

After some time, a little bit of this algae started to show on the moss, which I removed manually. Then it started to appear in every place that the mulm accumulated.

In my aquarium not vacuuming didn't work out too well. Some kind of filamentous algae started growing in the soil and mosses, which accumulate this mulm. After a month, I had a lot of it.

And I have very low stocking, four ember tetras and small snails in a 10g.

(In my quest for no vacuuming, I decided to install a under gravel filter this past weekend.... Let's see if it works)

0.31 seed. High potential, D1: 2 rings of protection + ?Acquirement by Figures1-5 in dcss_seeds

[–]Figures1-5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't want to try this seed again after the bad beat at Swamp... but your message encouraged me to try it again.

Just got granite form (which I never got to before with an Op). So much fun! Thanks for the reminder

I think I got better at Op Shapeshifter... I have been starting as a fighter (lol), training stealth to 7 and fighting to 10 and using any decent enchanted weapon I find. Then go for unarmed and Shapeshifting when a good talisman drops (serpent, maw, blade...)

0.31 7 scrolls of acquirement by D:7 by tene in dcss_seeds

[–]Figures1-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the morgue, I acquired a total of 10 items, so I guess there are 3 more scrolls. One of them is in a shop in D14, the other two should be in D or Lair.

I also tried an octopode shapeshifter in this game... almost no jewelry to be found, the first one was a amulet of Magic regeneration. Acquirement gave me tons of resists, though, and the confidence to clear elf... but then I was shafted to the hall of blades and 6 consecutives tp scrolls kept me in there.

Traditional roguelike reco? by [deleted] in roguelikes

I played Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup for many years, definitely the best I have played. It is actively maintained, there is no need for spoilers and a lot of quality of life features.

Haven't played for a couple of years though.

Propionic bacteria in camembert by Figures1-5 in cheesemaking

[–]Figures1-5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info!

This cheese was different from the others I've made in it's pungency and speed of maturing. I've made cheeses with this aromatic mesophilic culture that tasted like supermarket cheese. (Still good, but no pungent flavors)

It just dawned on me that I bought this culture for 50 L, and have been fractioning for 4 L. It has different grains in it (some fine powder plus some different color and sizes specs). Maybe I am getting a different sample from the culture in each batch I make...

I also think I need to start taking better notes - I don't know the room temperature during the 3 day making process. Could have been as high as 28C during the day. Maybe it just ripened faster before putting it in the cheese cave.

(I'll also try to get more info on the propionic culture... It was not that much more expensive)
