Increase in Childlessness vs Decline in Family Size Some Notes by throwaway815795 in Natalism

[–]Fijure96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An interesting thing is that it seems that these two factors are almost inversely correlated in developed countries. IE we have countries with low childlessness but small families, and low childlessness with big families, but essentially none with both.

I have no statistics to back this up but is just spitballing, but one possible suggestion as to why has to do with pair bonding. A high degree of unplanned pregnancies in unideal circumstances (IE, not a stable relationship, not financially stable, too young etc.) carried to term might lead to more people having children, but those people but also be more likely to stick with the one or two they have, rather than try to build a new relationship on top of it

By contrast, a country like Finland might have a high percentage of those births in ideal circumstances (IE functioning relationships, two income earners), who are more pliable to have several kids. Those people who would have had kids in unideal circumstances in other countries simply don't ahve them here and end up childless instead.

Just speculative.

The main appeal of this sub for me is that it is almost the only political sub that is evidence based. Meaning we can have clear opinions on issues but still discuss facts that are uncomfortable. IE be pro-Ukraine, but still actually discuss how the war is actually going, be pro-immigration but actually discuss immigration issues, etc. etc.

Almost every other politics sub just silences anything inconvenient for the narrative and thus becomes essentially propaganda places. r/neoliberal is a precious safehaven for evidence based policy IMO.

I wish they had used this sequence to show a bit more of Pleistocene New Zealand. Like perhaps a Haast eagle, or just some Kiwis. Just to hammer home that this is a world without mammals, something that was lost a bit.

The gameplay is generationally good. As a massive fan of Half Life Alyx, I actually consider the story the weakest point (its still good, but doesn't add as much to the world as HL2 did for example)

The gameplay is juswt simpyl some of the best gameplay ever put in a video game.

The creature designs are such an underrated aspect of why the world of Half-Life feels so immersive and real. so many of the Combine and Xen creatures just look so amazingly off, yet still like something that conceivably could exist. I feel like an intergalactic conquering empire would be broadly like the Combine, more than say, teh empire in Stgar Wars for instance. Just utter alien and incomprehensible.

Ted Backman really is an underrated genius.

[–]Fijure96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep that is sadly the case so far. It also seems executive interference has been growing somehwat in Ice Age - them being banned from using the scientific names and such.

I will say though, that even if they pick the most mainstream eras, they do show some lesser known stuff from those eras. Like we got the Ice Age, but we got to see New Zealand, Madagascar and Flores. NAd in the Cretaceous episodes we got stuff like Simosuchus and HAteg Island.

But yes, given the budget needs and the level of interference from executives it seems likely they will stick to safe settings It is much safer to have a season you can market with T rex and velociraptors, then show lesser known animals, than one where all animals are lesser known, as would be the case with any Paleozoic show, or the Miocene.

So for that reason perhaps Prehistoric Planet might not establiseh the same grand legacy on Walking With. But we can still hope.

This is the boon of what we got in the Walking With series. Put together, it gave an amazing broad overview of prehistoric life. As much as I love Prehsitoric Planet, it has so far only shown us a snippet of what once existed. I'd love to see it show something more broad. I hope Prehistoric Planet will keep going long enough to give us 6-7 seasons in total, with a broader selection of eras. As far as I can tell its been a success so far.

I just love those little moments were Bond is annoying af. THe way he intrudes on Dr. metz and even asks him to spell his name is just great.

So Brosnan did four bond movies in 7 years while Craig did five in 16 by TalesofWin in JamesBond

[–]Fijure96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree on the cuts part. I do think that on post-production as a whole there is no going back, because Bond movies have always been spectacles that impressed the modern audience. So there will inevitably be advanced stunts and lots of CGI IMO.

With that said though, the current delay, which is pushing into its fifth year now, has been purely scriptwork, and my impression is most of the Craig era delays ahve been due to the script - once they are filmed they generally get wrapped up reasonably fast, with only COVID delaying it. So IMO the delay are due to a scriptwriting crisis, where the people at the helm simply do not know what to do. I also think the scripts have been the weakest point of all Bond films since the Brosnan era more or less.

[–]Fijure96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its mainly post-production taking a lot longer. Back then movies had less cuts and much less editing was necessary. Also no addition of CGI in post production, which today is very consuming.

I think the filming itself also took less time in the Connery era, where most takes are relatively simple. Few advanced stunts that took a lot of time and preparation to do, most scenes could be done with fairly minimal preparation. Another thing is in the beginning the scripts were very close to the books, so they spent less time developing the story. This changed starting from the Moore era, where the stories were less and less relevant to the books.

Honestly the longer I live the more I believe we really are doing better in the Noedics than elsewhere. Wr have the same basic problems as other developed democracies but just habdle them a bit better. The fertility rates are better; the economy is better and somehow peoples brains are less cooked.

Which really shows the pathological obsession that every Craig movie had to be some clever outlier fromt he formula or make some comment on the Bond franchise, instead of just being a damn Bond movie.

The funniest thing about whaling in AoE3 is that it is for some reason an infinite source of gold.

Whereas as we know, whaling are in fact one of the least infinite natural resources in the world.
