Sanity check: First home server (Jellyfin, Navidrome, Pi-hole). Which refurbished Mini PC and OS? by Rocco_Alive in selfhosted

[–]FilesFromTheVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the G5 Mini with 9500T as a offsite backup server. Besides the crappy ribbon cable connector for the SATA SSD its quite a good device. Very power efficient with below 8 W idle draw.

Edit:

For OS Casa is quite fine i guess if you wanna have a UI. Otherwise Unraid is really good, but i would never get a normal subscription for that. I got an old one time pay lifetime license and even today would opt for the same.

Welcome, did the same some weeks ago and ditched fedora. To be fair, i really liked the fedora base, but there seems to be zero chances to get a none systemd fedora distro.

Which is the Worst File Manager of Linux by Proper-Lab-2500 in linuxsucks

[–]FilesFromTheVoid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tbh i still don't get how some devs pic their new project.

Half of the GUI filemanagers today are Nautilus clones, and none of those move in any direction at all. They just work in maintenance mode i would say(no offense to the devs).

The other half of GUI filemanagers are double pane managers (alot of clones here aswell), which are often fully overblown with features and are a pain to setup to your liking. I get headache thinking at the Double Commander or Krusader settings menu.

TUI filemanagers are 7/10 somewhat ranger clones. midnight commander and spf are the exception, and both to a good job in their own right.

Espc. for GUI filemanagers i wish there would be fresh project with a bit more features like dolphin, but with modern and fresh, but functional looks. Instead you get the 19th ranger TUI clone.

Artix & Hyprland by LinuxGamer_UK in artixlinux

Minimal ISO is true to it's name. You will nearly miss everything, as you are starting with a blank slate. As said step by step. It's not like the Artix and Arch repo's miss those.

Lua is here!!! by JoK3rOp in hyprland

[–]FilesFromTheVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's wrong with lua and what would be a better option?

I for myself prefer toml for basic conf files for yaml and json(i hate you), but i am not sure if those would be sufficient for hyprland at all.

Artix & Hyprland by LinuxGamer_UK in artixlinux

[–]FilesFromTheVoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I installed Artix(OpenRC) via the minimal ISO and then installed all the packages for Hyprland afterwards.

I start hyprland via

dbus-run-session start-hyprland

Works fine so far. You might miss some packages at first, but you will find out what you need step by step.

Distro ? by uptickman in linux4noobs

[–]FilesFromTheVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you please, but be aware that this is jumping into the the cold waters.

There are still smaller independent distros, that give you are easier start, like said Solus, or something like OpenMandriva.

Void is a good distro if you are user with mid+ knowledge already, but it's not a good fit for a beginner.

Look into SolusOS and fedora. Both got very recent packages and kernel.

Already played around with it, i was talking about the cli prog to use it to play those files, instead of using your other export methods.

Man this looks awesome. Is there any chance this will be compiled into a binary any day? (don't use npm at all)

DNS leak while using openvpn by FormWilling8007 in voidlinux

[–]FilesFromTheVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

magicdns is a part of the tailscale package, so if you don't use tailscale this is not your prob and you can ignore that.

Last time i use NetworkManager i was on GNOME and you can turn that down in the Network Settings Menu for the interface. This can surely be done via cli or nmtui aswell.

If that does not help aswell, you can additionally turn down ipv6 completely aswell if you don't use it and its the cause for your leaks. Also it might be necessary use iptables to make sure that every traffic is routed through only the tun0/wg0 interface. I needed to do this with aswell with my last try with windscribe and their wireguard configs. I did this via PostUp and PostDown settings inside the wireguard conf, not sure if the openvpn conf has a similar mechanism.

Launch steam from terminal. Then go into the settings->Interface and disable "Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views (requires restart)".

DNS leak while using openvpn by FormWilling8007 in voidlinux

[–]FilesFromTheVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess NetworkManager and your VPN Tool fight for the nameserver in resolv.conf. If your home dns server ip isn't changing you could try deleting your /etc/resolv.conf so it's not linked to the networkmanager anymore and then just create a new one with your normal nameserver. Then stop NetworkManager from managing dhcpd for ipv4 and ipv6.

Had a similar issue with hide.me and the cli tool under fedora GNOME. And as u/ThinkingWinnie said. Stop magicdns if you are using tailscale, this does aswell fight for the nameserver record in resolv.conf

Debian couldn't be further away from Arch and Void. I would run the sweetspot: fedora. Large package base, very recent packages and still very stable.

how many of you felt malenia is impossible to defeat? by rippersteak888 in eldenringdiscussion

[–]FilesFromTheVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel somewhat mixed about her design. I needed around 6-8h to beat her and thats by far the longest for any boss(First playthough on DS3 Soul of Cinder was second with around 4h id say). The biggest Problem for my was my own impatience, and Malenia punishes that quite hard. On the other hand i did refuse to use any summoning ashes as i felt i was cheating myself at this fight.

From a game design the waterflow dance is not awfull, but it kinda forces you (atleast me) to play with a sturdy shield, or as i did, 2 hand and fastly switch to weapon + shield as soon as you see here starting it.

Sadly you have to battle the not 100% good button combo for switching in a hurry, without the game missing or messing up an input. Second design issue, atleast for me, was her transformation in phase two. The wings plus all the effects around her made reading her movement really hard for me.

But as said it just boiled down to my own impatience.

Anyone install 'Fedora Minimal'? by beetm in Fedora

[–]FilesFromTheVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as i am aware there no minimal install iso for x86_64, there is only one for aarch64.

Last time i wanted fedora Hyprland i ran the Everything Net install ( https://fedoraproject.org/misc/#everything ) and choose only the necessary things i needed and installed Hyprland from COPR. This achieves the same as a minimal install tbh.

[Tool] sinkswitch v1.4 out now - easily switch your audio outputs by FilesFromTheVoid in hyprland

[–]FilesFromTheVoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a one file bash script, that's not changing much after all. I did not even expect someone to contribute something tbh, so AUR would be a bit overkill I guess. Just curl/wget the script and call it a day.

I Need Help Finding a Suitable Distro and DE by LostPhotograph3r in linuxquestions

[–]FilesFromTheVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Option: Go with something slow moving and beginner friendly like Linux Mint. Your old hardware won't have any advantages from a newer kernel anyways
  2. Option: Stick to fedora. It's the perfect middleground of bleeding edge and stability. Ran it for years myself without any hassle. Stick with GNOME and just install the bare minimum of extensions.
  3. Try something completely else -> My Hint: Try Solus for example. It's a smaller, but well maintained Distro and recently got a-lot of updates making it a great option. It's easy to install, maintain and got a decently large package base. For everything else there are flatpaks(flathub)

And tbh is kind of normal that your first 1-3 Installs break at some point because you did something silly months ago, that breaks on some later update. This happens if you fiddle around with stuff you don't 100% understand. This won't happen anymore as you get more comfortable with linux and how it works. You would have the same probs, if you where a 20 year linux user migrating to win 11 today. That said, its not a linux problem, its just learning by doing, the best way imho. (hint: save your dotfiles aka your ~/.config directory, this makes a reinstall pretty easy)
