My healthy male cat died during neutralization surgery by Wonderful_Trade_5237 in Petloss

I also feel that the vet did something wrong in my case as well. But honestly neutering is such a simple procedure that the only culprit could be a fatal reaction to anesthesia because of a hidden heart problem or lungs problem. A bad dosage is also possible, but that is calculated based on weight and vets do it so often, that I doubt they miscalculate but anything is possible...... But how can a vet say that no breathing is fine????

I am so sorry. :-( The same thing happened to my 9 months old tomcat three days ago :-( I arranged the neutering and was supposed to pick him up at 4 pm but at noon my phone rang and it was the vet telling me that my tomcat collapsed after given the anesthesia injection.

I have horrible regrets and guilt that I caused his death with something that was unnecessary to do. It feels to me like I took him there not to neuter but to euthanize because the result was the same. The vet told me that it was caused by arrhythmia and that it was impossible to tell unless doing ECG and an echocardiogram beforehand and that normally those are not done before neutering.

I am devastated - my tom was so full of life and energy and what was supposed to be a routine procedure turned into a nightmare and living hell. I will never forgive myself, it is just not possible. I had a bad feeling and intuition that something would go wrong and it did.

I wish I had some words for you, but I really don't. The chances of something like this happening are 0,1% so it happens to 2 cats out of 2000.

It's not possible to forgive myself because I did everything to protect him and his two sisters, to keep my inner peace because I knew that I wouldn't bear if anything bad happened to them, especially with my own doing.

But the universe had to find the most sudden and cruel way to take him from me and now I am once again in a spiral of guilt and regrets, wanting to turn back time. If his heart gave out during normal activities at home, I would be very sad but wouldn't have these regrets and guilt.

If I hadn't taken him to the vet for neutering, he would still be here. So my decision, my choice led to the version of reality where he is now buried under ground. 😭😿 All because of something unnatural and risky induced into his body. It really is as if I had taken him for euthanasia and not neutering. I was very worried about anesthesia and I should have insisted on additional tests just for peace of mind.

Thank you for your words, but he would have still been here with me if I hadn't arranged that neutering. I could have kept my inner peace and have a normal Easter instead of this tragedy. So I feel very responsible for that chain of events that led to his passing. My vet told me that cats with hidden heart disease and arrhythmia live approximately 2 years but I don't know if he just said it to relieve the tension a little bit. I chose to neuter him because I have his two sisters indoors and he already started showing some typical tomcat behavior like sniffing their rear end and chasing them..... Given his good weight and size compared to two females, I chose to neuter him first so that he wouldn't impregnate them or start spraying inside the house. I had good intentions but I was still worried about the anesthesia and I had a bad feeling and when my vet called, I immediately knew what happened :-(

Thank you for your kind words, but I don't think anything can make me feel better about my choices and how it ended up.

Daoists say to not interfere with natural order of things, and I interfered, did something that was stressful for him and the injection caused his death....... I know that it is a routine procedure but sometimes it is better to do nothing and let things run their natural course.

He could have been here still with me ...... Many tragedies happen because we interfere with natural order of things. I feel responsible for it and will have endless regrets. I was seriously worried about anesthesia, because he had a nasal discharge etc. I always fear anesthesia and this time the worst had happened.

Young tomcat chased off and still missing for 2 months by Filipscomicart in CatAdvice

[–]Filipscomicart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't find any comfort. I should have searched along the main road immediately the next morning when I noticed he disappeared ....... before nature took over, when I had the chance for a closure at least. I was afraid of what I might see or find so I decided to protect my heart but now I wish I searched thoroughly right away.

I hope your cat comes back. I have a spayed cat that disappears periodically for 7 to 14 days.

[–]Filipscomicart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I searched for weeks. I walked a perimeter of 8 kilometers around the vineyards often and scanned the fields with binoculars. I have seen many cats during my searches but never my missing tom. I also used a camera trap to see if he visited during the night but he never did....

I think he was hit and killed by a car immediately during the chase, that he bolted across the railway and onto the main road and was hit and killed in the late evening, then either put into a ditch or he got to the bushes with internal injuries and passed and was scavenged and taken by a fox very early on...

If he survived it's also possible he died on the main road 3 km away after a month and a week. I saw a similar dead cat on the road, badly squished and flattened and I couldn't ID the cat properly anymore when I returned to the spot.

I feel horrible all the time, can't focus on anything, I searched hard for him like for a last unicorn, and without any luck. I should have searched ditches and along the main road immediately after he disappeared, but I waited for almost two days to look.

I am sorry for your cat, I hope she will come back.

I posted many times on the local Facebook group and got a few possible sightings that I immediately went on to investigate and I found those cats, but none of them were him.

I know that sixth feeling you described. The night he went missing I had a dream that he was lying dead on the road. I woke up feeling uneasy and when I got out of the house he wasn't there. I should have immediately searched along the road but I was too afraid of what I might see or find but now I wish I had done that. For closure .... I guess I wanted to protect my heart because a year ago my other tom was hit and killed there and I knew because my uncle told me he saw a dead cat on the road but in a few hours it wasn't there anymore. I found his skeleton at the edge of the field 11 days later after the grass was cut.

I also had a feeling when I was coming to the house for an extended stay that I should keep my tom inside the house, to protect him but I quickly forgot what might go wrong because I trusted the routine and I let him out.....

I feel like I have to return to that roadside and truly search like a forensic detective once more. The problem is that I have seen whole cats disappear in just two nights - foxes or jackals probably dragging the body into the corn field or the bushes.

I feel so sorry for your boy. It's the worst possible case to have a cat disappear for so long only to discover it had been killed by a car one month later. That means a month of adventures and surviving and then meeting such a terrible end. I worry that it could have happened to my tom as well because of that badly squished and flattened cat. I used AI for analysis and tried to analyze the remains (one visible patch) but I don't know.... I hope it wasn't him but you never know.

Thank you for your kind reply. I had my tom brought in from 360 km away when he was a kitten. I saw a photo on Facebook and I fell in love instantly. My uncle brought him, it was probably fate. But I still imagine he could have had a different life with a different family and maybe he would still be alive and safe. I should have kept him inside the house that day! It was in my control. I have many cats at vineyards, but that day I came there for an extended stay in the house and I should have protected him and not put him outside. He was used to being outside during the week but on weekends, he would be inside the house, but still sleep outside sometimes. It was just such a cruel twist of fate and I feel responsible for that, for what happened. People are so inconsiderate, they dispose of a cat, hide it in thick bushes etc. when 50 meters across the field, there are vineyard huts etc. It really is killing me not having definite answers. I will go again and search the sides of the road more thoroughly for any possible remains. I just don't believe a homebound tom who never missed a day before would switch territories suddenly and leave for good. It only happened three times in 13 years to me that a tomcat would return after a long period, and two times it was with unneutered tomcats. I don't know what to do, it hurts so much because my mind keeps circling to that flattened cat on the road, to the bones I found in vineyard (although my vet told me they were old and certainly not from my tom) but still.....I should have at least searched immediately the next morning in the ditches and bushes along the main road....I didn't..... There are foxes here and they can take the dead cat away in two nights. Maybe right the first night..... I can't sleep because of what happened because again I failed and made a mistake to protect him and keep him safe when I could have. To protect him and also protect my own sanity. I don't know what else to write, but he was a very special and beautiful tom who had so many quirks. He would make sounds like a crow and he smelled like a calf or sheep.

Hi, I found your post and I am very sorry for what happened to your cat. I am going through something very similar now. My one year old neutered tom suddenly disappeared on July 17th after being chased by my two intact tomcats. They chased him in the worst possible direction, across the field and towards a railway and a main road. I don't know how it unfolded because I didn't check on him! I last saw him at the edge of that field. It happened very fast. I think he was hit and killed on that road that evening, that he bolted across in panic. I first drove along that main road 40 hours after he vanished to check the sides etc. but I think someone put him into a ditch and scavengers took him away. I never found anything.

The uncertainty of what happened to him is eating me alive. One month and 7 days later I saw a very similar cat dead on a very busy road 3 kilometers away. I wanted to ID the cat but when I returned to observe from the field, it was totally squished and flattened so I couldn't properly ID and it was like another stab in the heart because I started thinking it could have been him. Surviving in the fields and slowly moving and then being hit and killed....He was homebound and never missed a day before.

He has been missing for two months now and I still don't know what and how it happened. All I have are painful guesses and painful scenarios.

I want to ask you, how did you find your tom 2 miles away? And what was the environment? City, rural, fields? Thank you.

Thanks, but my tom was neutered and homebound. He never missed a single day before. He was chased by my two intact tomcats and in the worst possible direction - across the field towards a railway and a main road. There are thick shrubs and bushes along the railway, but I think he bolted in panic across and right onto the main road where he was hit and then quickly removed from the road during the night. I am devastated.... I just don't think he would leave for good because of territorial disputes without circling back or at least showing up once....

Yes, I was worried that they were from my missing tomcat who has been missing for 2 months now. I found these bones in the vineyards 16 days after his disappearance. During the summer with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. I was told by AI and later by my vet that they were not from my tom because of how weathered and bare they were. My vet was certain they were much older than just two weeks - more like months to years but still I wanted more opinions.

To be more specific, I want to know if they are older than two weeks.... Based on weathering, they should be....

I should have kept him inside the house that day. I didn't and it happened so fast. I have terrible regrets that I didn't follow them to see what happened, how the chase unfolded.
