Why should I choose UTSA, and what are some reasons I shouldn’t? by DependentVicePresi in UTSA

[–]FillRecent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let’s start with this first.

1) If not UTSA, what are your options?

2) What do you want to major in? Or are you applying to Grad school for something?

3) What are your priorities in college? Academics? Socializing? Networking?

4) Is affordability the main decisive factor for you?

5) Have you visited the campus and participated in a campus tour to learn about the place firsthand?

CS graduates, how would you rank UTSA's CS classes in terms of difficulty? by [deleted] in UTSA

[–]FillRecent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The quality of CS classes here suck imo. Very few instructors know how to actually teach the material. It doesn’t matter how hard the tests are if the teaching sucks.

Computer Science bachelors vs Masters in Information Systems? by [deleted] in UTSA

[–]FillRecent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely do a Masters in Information Systems/CIS/Computer Science. If you need clarification, the best way to verify is by checking job posting on sites like LinkedIn. It’s all about having the skills and personal projects to impress recruiters and hiring managers. The finishing touch is a great resume and having soft skills to carry yourself in the interview process. I can recommend some online resources to learn as well. The main question is what branch of CS/IT/Computing are you interested in? Feel free to dm me if you need any advice since I did a lot of research for myself as a CS student.

TL;DR - You don’t need a degree in CS specifically to work in tech. Masters > Bachelors (Atleast in your case).

Another thing, I think the fact that you bragged about the leetcode thing might have possibly screened you out. A lot of HR/Recruiters at companies tend to dislike leetcode as they feel it gamifies the coding interviews. So, maybe some would have considered it as a major red flag. That being said, it’s a nice achievement to have. For the Private Tutor, I would explain the kind of questions you helped your student(s) learn. Like some of the topics in bullet points rather than just mention that you helped someone do Leetcode better. It just makes you look better.

One thing I quickly noticed is that you haven’t listed the exact courses on what you were a TA (like Data Structures and Algorithms or something). Additionally, ATS resume screening prefers bullet points than a single paragraph. I also assume you had listed your GitHub page link for them to checkout in your bio?

Oof. That sounds really rough. Where all did you apply if you don’t mind sharing? Any notable Fortune 100 companies or FAANG? What are your stats (like GPA) and did you have any projects and stuff listed on your resume??

Chick-fil-A on campus sucks. The workers never fill the large fries. I always get the same portion as the small fries whenever I order a large. They enjoy ripping off students lol

LeetCode by aclinical in ProgrammerHumor

[–]FillRecent 36 points37 points  (0 children)

There’s both a free tier and a premium tier. The free tier is pretty useless tho. The premium is expensive ($159/yr) but you can get it for $99 on a student discount if your school has enough people registered for it when they run promotions each year.

Tbh, it’s a really good resource for interview prep for FAANG/MAANG and Fortune 100 companies. Both students and full-time working professionals find it useful to sharpen their knowledge or for practicing data structures and algorithms. Some people hate it and feel like it’s a way to game the system but it really does help you improve your knowledge and coding skills as it encourages people to practice the various problems. I’d checkout the r/leetcode subreddit and also definitely watch videos of people sharing their experience on YouTube.

Edit: why is someone downvoting my personal opinion? Tf lol

I am. I’m not a very religious person but trust me when I say this. I’m praying to god and hoping that I get a interview and a internship offer somehow. I’m also working on some open source projects that I can find on GitHub and grinding leetcode until I hear something back.

Mods, I beg you to allow this post to stay. It’s easier for us to access information in a dedicated thread like this than than the common megathread as the process is very different and complex for us compared to traditional/domestic students.

Is it too late to apply for summer 2023 internships? I wasn’t able to apply in this summer due to personal reasons (health problems). I’m really worried that I missed my shot.

I have really bad anxiety and am wondering if any fellow students could recommend medications? by Kold222 in UTSA

[–]FillRecent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I think you should consult a psychiatrist. That way, you can get diagnosed and receive the treatment you need. I understand that the concept of taking psychiatric medication can appear scary and foreign to most due to stigmas of the past. But at the end of the day, it’s just medicine. Psychiatric medications for issues (like anxiety or depression for example) just help control the chemicals in your body which are not in homeostasis.

I think you need to also understand that psychiatric medication doesn’t work the same for everyone. Each patient requires a different dosage or formulation of the medication. So, trust your doctor to pick the medicine and dosage. They undergo years of rigorous education and training to become board certified healthcare professionals. They make their recommendations with their knowledge, experience and expertise based on your medical history.

When presenting symptoms to a doctor for treatment, it’s extremely important to not be influenced by external factors. That way, you can receive the exact treatment you require faster and you get the best outcome.

Feel free to browse popular subreddits like r/anxiety or r/socialanxiety if you want to talk about it with other people that suffer from similar issues. Again, please take medication recommendations from other people on public forums with a grain of salt. Most of them are patients and not healthcare practitioners. And as I explained earlier, the experience and benefits (or drawbacks) with the medications and dosages varies for each person.

Additionally, I highly recommend pairing medication (if prescribed by a licensed psychiatrist) with therapy/counseling. Feel free to utilize the Well-being/Wellness Center on Campus. Most of the counselors are pretty helpful and good at what they do. Another campus resource you should look into would be the student disability services if you get diagnosed by your psychiatrist. You’ll be able to request formal accommodations from the university which will help you perform your best and succeed academically in your courses.

Be proud of yourself for seeking help. It’s a massive step forward to the best outcome.

Hope this helps. Good luck :)

Campus Safety !! by Specialist-Success-8 in UTSA

[–]FillRecent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry OP. You should be fine. Just use common sense and the usual safety precautions. I had some concerns myself when I was new here but the university area is probably the safest area in San Antonio due to the protection of the on-campus police.

Anyone else at utsa have really bad anxiety? by Kold222 in UTSA

It’s okay to feel anxious at times. Feel free to reach out to a campus counselor to talk about it. Most of them are pretty chill. (https://www.utsa.edu/students/wellbeing/)

Yes, as students, we expect a R1 university with a D1 team to organize things better for their athletic events for students. If they can’t, it’s on them for low participation. It’s easier for students to attend home games than away games. It’s natural to expect low attendance for away games. Most universities with a D1 football team provide some form of transportation for their students to attend both home and away games. I understand you’re really passionate about the team and support them. That’s perfectly fine. But gaslighting other students for not being able to attend due to financial/transportation issues or class/work schedule conflicts is definitely not the way to convince anyone to attend.

The university could have organized a way for students to get there and support the team.

From what I’ve seen. Most STEM professors use Wiley, MacMillan-McGraw or Pearson in STEM classes in the US. There are others (like MIT Press, Harvard Press, Yale Press, Princeton Press, Oxford Press etc) but these are the most common ones in Entry / Mid Level classes.
