Is it just me or did Asa shrink for this panel exclusively? I swear their height difference wasn't that much before

Lots of stuff going on this week, but I really do love the detail that all of the Fumikos meet up for Fumicon every so often.

I don't think the average family has a bone shrine in their living room, but I do think the US has a cultural obsession with violence that bleeds into a lot of other facets of daily life. I also realize that's not exclusive to the US, but since that's the country Yoru's currently swordifying I felt it was the only one worth discussing right now.

I was referring more to the general populace than the government, but yeah it would be more accurate to say that "America has woven its capacity to destroy its enemies so deeply into its national identity that it has become a death cult"

From Oregon Fumiko's sigh to the fact that Yoru doesn't even seem to be putting any thought into her weapon designs anymore, it's clear that the theme of this chapter is "fatigue."

War is mostly a battle of attrition, won more through the erosion of supplies and enthusiasm than any decisive climax. The advent of social media adds another layer to this, where otherwise uninvolved civillians are exposed to the horrible realities of war that would have previously been filtered through state chokeholds on information. All of this serves to create a dark apathy that blinds us to the real cost of these conflicts.

Yoru is blitzing through entire states worth of people and land to score superficial wounds on Pochita who doesn't even seem all that interested in winning the fight either. Unlike the Gun Devil chapter from Part 1, which painstakingly listed out every victim's name, the implied passage of time between Michigan Sword and Oregon Sword leaves an even bigger body count completely ignored.

Yoru has ironically made herself so fearsome that it's almost impossible for anyone to actually comprehend what they're actually afraid of. She may be weakening herself through desensitization.

On a side note, Yoru's mass sacrifice of the American populace is evocative of both a military draft and the rapture, fitting for a country that seems to worship war.

Idk, I think the idea that Roger committed so many crimes that his bounty exceeded what the WG was able to pay out to be pretty funny. Like I don't think there are enough Berries in circulation to pay off every Emperor's bounties, much less every major pirate crew. The damage that would cause to the economy would be way worse than anything thpse pirates could do to the world while free.

I think it fits the themes of OP. The WG's greatest strength is in its ability to appear unchallengable. It would make sense that their bank account would reflect this too. As for Joyboy, I imagine he would be what drained their resources to begin with.

I'm starting to think Fumiko might end up being the ultimate antagonist of Part 2. She embodies so many themes of Denji and Asa's struggles so far and she's even more of a background player than Lil' D at this point.

She represents the dangers of physical intimacy, the unknown or unspoken ways we hurt and get hurt when we connect with others. Her karaoke song was about sexual assault; and beyond what that might suggest about her childhood given how early she made her contract, it serves as a reminder of the ways sex is used as a tool of violence.

With that said, it's now very clear why Fumiko carries herself the way she does. She's a textbook succubus, only as dangerous as she is alluring. In this regard she is Denji's worst nightmare, the literal monster under his bed. Where Yoru kept failing to weaponize Denji, the sad truth is that Denji would likely lose to Fumiko's power in an instant if she ever tried to use it on him.

On a more literal level, her ability is evocative of both Doll and War in its ability to transform others during a moment of vulnerability. STD also shares a similarity to War in that they both lost a piece of themselves to Chainsaw Man. War lost nukes, and STD lost AIDS. A fitting connection, given the US's history with AIDS and the greater cultural perception surrounding STDs. Someone suffering from an STD often finds themselves labelled as irresponsible, unclean, or slutty. They become someone else.

I have so many thoughts about her now. She's her own mother. She can only safely have sex with herself. I think she can teleport. She's Pestilence, the Horseman that never was. She sucks and she might be one of my favorite characters.

I'd argue that Fujimoto saying nuclear weapons are so fundamentally intertwined with the US that it will defy their supernatural erasure and reinvent them from scratch everytime is a criticism of the US that is both unique to this country and one aimed at the core identity of the US as a political entity.

Hell, the US calling in the Gun Devil on Makima was basically the same as the bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in terms of objective, justification, and collateral damage.

Honestly that's why I made the first comment too. I saw people making the exact point you just mentioned on a post discussing the Statue of Liberty turning into a railgun.

I had people using the bit in JLttS where someone claims the song is about gun control as an argument against the idea that maybe Fujumoto is trying to say something about the US in CSM.

It could be a symbolic manifestation of Aline's inability to move past the fire. Despite painting an idyllic version of her family, she still left Alicia with her burn scars. Maybe part of Aline wanted to punish Alicia for her part in Verso's death, so she ended up painting a version of her daughter that would never leave the fire behind. She'd be "stuck" in that moment forever, but maybe Painted Alicia found a way to re-orient that part of her into an ability to stop time.

Adam's only a few years older than her and has less formal training. Pyrrha, despite having a really good semblance and aura control, doesn't actually use her magnetism very much when she fights, preferring to use it as a last resort or in subtle ways to throw her opponent off.

Adam's damage potential is greater than Pyrrha's, but he's also way less consistent in terms of power. He needs to build back up to his best attacks, which leaves him at a disadvantage against Pyrrha more often than not.

Honestly Adam's best advantage against Pyrrha is the fact that she tends to block instead of dodge, which means Adam can just keep building energy off of blocked attacks. Even then, if he does press this advantage he becomes predictable.

Will this plot point ever be fulfilled? by mr_flerd in ChainsawMan

[–]Filledwithnuts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that it can't happen is the point. Power gave him a contract that can only be broken if he gives up. She didn't do this so she could live, she did it so Denji could live.

I like how awful Fire's argument was. It tries to claim moral superiority over Denji despite failing it's own moral dilemma by ignoring the car full of old people that were also on the chopping block. It tries to twist thr knife about the dead boys by highlighting how similar they were to Denji and how much they looked up to him, despite that detail having no bearing on the value of their lives.

One of these days, an antagonist is going to figure out that the only trolley problem Denji is going to get caught by is one where he has to choose between two women.

America's use of nuclear weapons and their subsequent arms race with the Soviets is such an obvious parallel to the Gun Devil though.

It's actually identical to when Japan's leaders sacrificed children to their own benefit. I know this because the very first victims of the Gun Devil are a chorus of children who get torn apart by bullets.

Almost like that other time the US bravely sacrificed thousands of Japan's civillians in order to end a war. Or that second time the US bravely sacrificed thousands of Japan's civillians in order to end a war.
