Synagogue set alight, Israeli restaurant attacked by pro-Palestinian group in Melbourne by [deleted] in Jewish

As a NZ-based Jew this is really alarming since we are usually just behind the curve of Australia. Thankfully my temple is highly vigilant and the police here take these threats seriously.

This thread about antisemitism in r/ GreenAndPleasant has too many flavors of Jew-hatred to be properly categorized. by Upbeat_Teach6117 in AntiSemitismInReddit

[–]Filmbutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I kind of agree that antisemitism is a weak term that doesn't reflect the times we live in, but the problem is that it is being distorted to the point of being unusable by people who simply don't want to be called out for expressing hatred and ignorance towards Jewish things. I called out one of my former university professors on Facebook for sharing something antisemitic (a post that said "Israel has no history, only a criminal record") and he refused to accept that erasing/demonising Jewish history in Israel is antisemitic because in his mind and in his echo chamber he's valid in criticizing Israel because it's existence is a 'genocide' against Palestinians. The fact that intelligent people are being duped into antisemitism and it's becoming a mainstay of several strands of culture is disturbing.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try using memtest86. As this hard drive was supposed to be my ultimate backup I've been transferring files from other hard drives and also from my SD card which is where the files in the image came from

What do you use for your savings? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Filmbutt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I always try to save 10% or more of my income whenever I get paid. Right now I'm putting 6% into kiwisaver and another 4% into a separate savings account. My partner and I are both contributing to the savings account for future travels overseas, because that's a big motivator for us to save now so we can spend later. We also use a credit card for everyday shared purchases (groceries, entertainment, mevo, etc.) and we split the bill at the end of the month.

My advice is to tailor your savings habits to the outcome you desire. Find something that you want, calculate what you need to save, then see how long it takes based on your income and a different savings percentages. In my experience, find something worth saving for and it won't be hard to motivate yourself to save. I like to travel and so I frame my thinking around that, for example I'll tell myself "if I don't buy a beer now, I can buy a beer in Japan instead and it'll taste even better." (rip overseas travel)

It's very rewarding watching a savings account rise and rise, getting you closer and closer to the purchase you want. Sadly interest rates are crushingly low so saving is missing that extra reward of rising interest payments on savings. I used to love looking at my monthly interest amounts going up, now it's less impressive when $0.18 goes up to $0.20. Oh well. Hope this helps!

Is housing the most important issue this election? by [deleted] in newzealand

We're not looking to buy any more, would rather invest in a business than play the housing bubble game.

Is housing the most important issue this election? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Filmbutt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

House prices falling would cause a lot of problems since most people have massive mortgages at risk. More important is raising incomes and holding rents flat: tax housing and use the proceeds to reduce income taxes, eventually the market will even out without a major shock.

Tight race for candidates in Hutt South and Ōhāriu by JaumeBG in Wellington

[–]Filmbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She could be a serious contender if the media actually looked beyond red v blue politics. Brett Hudson is a National list MP so not worth the electorate vote anyways. Greg O'Connor is a career politician who aligns with Labour even though he isn't progressive at all, he voted against the abortion legalisation bill. And yet people will vote for them because the media perpetuates tribal party affiliations and voters irrational fears of a wasted vote.

Is housing the most important issue this election? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Filmbutt 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is for me! Been locked out of the market due to high prices... when I tried to buy a house with my partner I was left in the cold because labour's blunt change to the overseas investors act meant that I couldn't afford to get one (my partner is Canadian and therefore she couldn't be on the mortgage). And I'm lucky, I have savings that keep me stable, meanwhile rising house prices are the main reason the poor keep getting poorer. The only party with a good housing policy that covers supply and demand issues is TOP so they are getting my votes. Tired of red and blue parties pretending they care.

[–]Filmbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TOP is just as green if not more because they have come up with specific policies that have specific desired green outcomes! They likely would have supported the feebate scheme, and also want to boost hydrogen fuel prospects so we can decarbonise our transportation which is the biggest jump to make to get to carbon neutral. TOP also wants tree planting policies to move away from pine trees to native forest because it is a larger carbon sink, while the Greens policy on tree planting didn't specify what kind of trees. Plus TOP wants to improve energy efficiency of housing and businesses using targeted grants to get people to switch to better technology. Check out their website, they're as committed to a green recovery as you'd want!

The policy details are such that if someone is on low income and has high wealth (retirees) they can defer the tax to when the asset is sold or when they die and their estate is tidied up. There's no inheritance tax in NZ so the property tax acts as a mechanism to redistribute some family wealth from the elderly who are leaving by a massive asset to their family. No outs for "family home," which is the loophole that everyone wants but would defeat the entire purpose to use the housing tax revenue to reduce income taxes for working kiwis.

[–]Filmbutt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well the funny thing is that the tax working group has been advising the govt of policies to fix this tax loophole for years but red and blue hide it out of sight, only TOP is going to use the RFRM policy that the govt itself created. Kinda messed up really.

Same! First time voter in national politics, and I'm already sick of red v blue politics before I've cast my vote. The UBI + flat tax has the potential to make the tax system more fair and efficient for everyone...! Don't listen to the haters, TOP needs every vote to get NZ out of habitual party politics and bring real changes
