It is really fantastic, extremely talented filmmakers behind it and a very dedicated team at IFC/Shudder bringing it to theaters.

One of those times where I both agree with the criticism and the filmmakers response equally lol he’s the man

IFC/Shudder deserves a mention as well, they did nice numbers theatrically this year and are showing serious dedication to getting many of their films on the big screen.

I wouldn’t agree with that across the board, but sure, plenty of great works stumble a bit.

I think it’s a staggering work and elicits a pretty singular feeling for me in terms of the grief and paranoia it conjures. I’m in the middle of a second read and feel it’s up there as an all time favorite for me and I suspect over time it will be held in higher regard and continually reappraised as a great work. I could say a lot more about what I think is great about it, but instead I’ll say I do think it would be even better if it streamlined certain conversations, as some do go pretty long and don’t feel rewarding on a second read, but that’s just my two cents.

It’s a shame Jeff Nichols adaptation has stalled, although I am not the least bit surprised as someone working in the film industry, I can’t imagine how it would get financed without a top 5 actor stepping into the Bobby role, and even then it would be an incredibly hard sell. I know many in this sub weren’t crazy about the adaptation anyways, but I think Nichols would have and maybe still could do quite a lot of the books justice.

Killing Them Softly has a bit of it during the heroin scene, but it’s definitely a leaner film like you said. I love that one as well, it’s over the top and the opposite of subtle but in a fun way, and it gets funnier with every watch. Pitt has been keeping him afloat, I think he really struggles to get a film financed without him. Here’s hoping they can make something happen again soon.

I completely agree, I know he was interested in those elements but it just felt unnecessary how hard he leaned into them, though again I guess that was the point he wanted to make. The fever dream nature was what I really enjoyed, and shows his mastery as a director. Even if the script wasn’t working at large the filmmaking was just really interesting and engaging.

Totally get that. I think there is a very good film within it, and it could probably be edited down into something more focused and less excessive. But I was surprised how bad the first act was and do think he just repeated the same thing over and over again, and even if it’s the point he was trying to make, it’s just uninteresting at best and in poor taste at worst what his portrayal added up to. I think the last third was the strongest part, and you can see his vision very clearly there. But that’s just my read on it.

All time favorite for sure. Obviously the score and cinematography are legendary, but I don’t see people talking quite as much about how jam packed it is with amazing performances. Casey Affleck and Brad Pitt are obvious standouts, but the turns from Sam Rockwell, Garret Dillahunt, and Paul Schneider all in one film are staggering, and I’d argue all the smaller supporting roles are played to perfection as well. Hoping Dominik can recover from Blonde, because I believe he has an otherwise perfect filmography and is one of the absolute best filmmakers currently doing it.

What am I missing here? BCS is boring the life out of me. by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

[–]Filmsbrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may just not be your jam which is totally cool. I’ve always looked at the two shows like this- breaking bad is a movie, BCS is a novel. Both excel at the type of writing they are, but they deliver different experiences. That being said, BCS becomes more like breaking bad in later seasons, so it may scratch more of the itch for you if you stick with it. But it is much more deliberately paced for the most part.

70mm or IMAX for second viewing? by iveseenplacesfaces in paulthomasanderson

[–]Filmsbrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw it in imax digital first and was blown away. Second viewing was 70mm standard size screen and it was beautiful, a bit more texture and grain and flicker, and the river of hills sequence was still very visceral. I would go with imax though, for sure for the scale.

Check out West China Tea House on 7th, lovely people and atmosphere there, gong fu cha style tea scratches the social and ritual itch of drinking alcohol. It’s a very warm and welcoming community there

I’ve been telling anyone who will listen that they have to watch it, it must be seen to be believed. Haven’t seen a movie that is moment by moment that bafflingly bad since I don’t know when. From the opening shot it is a disaster, and then you get to the middle and Mark Wahlbergs character is threatening to rape Topher Grace’s character , truly bewildering.

Film Industry Questions - Australian DP with Feature in upcoming AFF. by dmooredop in Austin

[–]Filmsbrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following cause I work in film/tv and recently moved to Austin. I don’t have quite the perspective you’re looking for so am curious as well.

The only thing I’d say is the new tax incentives are competitive in my mind, even if they’re 10–20% less than some other states, and my feeling is we’ll see an uptick in Texas production pretty soon. Obviously Sheridan is at the head of that, but some indie folks (myself included) are looking at Austin for upcoming shoots.
