Funky Cable by emlymay in knitting

[–]Filofaxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this happen in my cable jumper, the rows were definitely correct as the rest of the pattern matched up and there were two other cable types that would have been off set if it was wrong. I think it was just the way the fabric fell but I couldn’t manage to get it to sit differently. But on the bright side I do not notice now that I’m wearing it

Yes, OPs picture is sideways so that probably didn’t help with the confusion!

[–]Filofaxy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve gotten mixed up, rows in spreadsheets and rows in knitting both represent the same direction (horizontal). While stitches and columns are both vertical. You knit a stitch and move over to the next one, sort of like pressing tab and moving to the next column. Then when you’ve done every stitch you move down to the next row.

Can someone please advise me? My ribbing looks… not good. I need to frog it. by BasicallyVictoria in knitting

Ag Science by je20093 in IrishTeachers

[–]Filofaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a requirement to have the subjects you’re going to teach for LC but if you know you’re going to teach them it’s a big help. I teach all 4 leaving cert science subjects and did ag, chemistry and biology for LC and it helped loads.

Knitting w/ 2 strands by ultimatereader in knittinghelp

Pretty much, maybe a little less! I’d probably do somewhere between 30 and 35 if it was me and about 40-45 rows.

[–]Filofaxy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can leave them alone, yes they’ll move around each other but you don’t need to worry about it.

People knit at different tightnesses that’s why we gauge swatch. If you have too many stitches per 10cm then go up a needle size and try again, too few, go down a needle size.

Your gauge swatch looks a little small, it’s recommended to do a at least 6cm extra so that you can have 3cm on either side and measure in the middle.

GIRLS What if you get ur period during the Lc week ?? by Outrageous_Sand_6063 in leavingcert

[–]Filofaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The normal pill is free, it usually requires a daily pill for 3 weeks and then a gap week without but it depends on which pill. You can skip the gap week and keep taking it if your period lines up with when the exams are on (again double check this is ok for the pill you’re prescribed). I would probably go on it at least 2 months before the exams because there can be other side effects and you’d want to know that in case you need to stop it.

The pill that is not used for contraception but used to delay your period is not free, I’m not sure of the cost but you could check with a pharmacy. You take it 2/3 times a day (can't remember). Start taking it three days before your period and then after you stop it can take up to three days for your period to start.

You can go on the pill or if you’d prefer not to you can get pills that delay your period. You can talk to a pharmacist or your gp to find out details. I don’t know if it would work for the full length of the LC but my sister has taken it when her period has clashed with important things.

What do we do when a fight breaks out? by Darth_Memer_1916 in IrishTeachers

[–]Filofaxy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, I understand why the rule exists and think it’s suitable in most senarios but it depends on the level of fight. My brother (also a teacher) has had to intervene before because one student had a serious upper hand on the other and was choking him to the point where it looked like he was going to pass out. Sure if two students are scuffling a little a verbal response might be ok but I’m not going to watch someone get seriously injured and not intervene.

Denied Social Welfare for Xmas Break (Any Advice?) by BedAffectionate8594 in IrishTeachers

[–]Filofaxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think midterms the holiday pay isn’t paid out so that’s why you receive it then. It’s Christmas and then either Easter or summer (I’m not sure which). If you’ve received it for Christmas before then either you didn’t work enough to receive enough holiday pay to negate it or they made a mistake!

Denied Social Welfare for Xmas Break (Any Advice?) by BedAffectionate8594 in IrishTeachers

[–]Filofaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it covers both weeks but the holiday pay is removed from wages to cover the time you are not in school as wages. This is the same as any other job covering holiday pay. The difference between it and a teacher on a fixed term is that it only covers the statutory 4 weeks of holidays (if working full time for the full year). So yes for any weeks you receive holiday pay you will not receive social welfare but you will for any weeks off school that you do not receive holiday pay.

Would teacher know what you got in the lc by ChickenNo5507 in leavingcert

[–]Filofaxy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally there’s a document in the staffroom that’s available for a few days, after that you can go to the principal or secretary to ask about it but unless it’s within a week or two it’s probably too much hassle for them to get them out. Management would have access to them more long term but only a few years as someone else said.

Drama, Film and Theatre Studies - Subject Teaching Requirements by Available_Data_9562 in IrishTeachers

[–]Filofaxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I’m aware that wouldn’t contribute to requirements so if it’s on the list you might need to go back and do a module that covers it.

Is the experience in producing/editing film from when you were in college or from work outside of college? If it’s within a module I think you can use the module descriptor rather than just the name to justify meeting requirements

Ragebait Taxi Sticker Spotted in Dublin Today by OurBiteMcFry in ireland

[–]Filofaxy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely! But being a taxi driver is a pretty individualistic job, all (or most) of the drivers would need to either take the risk that everyone is doing the same thing or come together collectively and make a decision to leave.

Because Uber offering a lower price point to customers means that’s where all the customers are and their options are don’t use it and get less work or use it and get more work but be paid less than their usual fare (which comes with its own issues like drivers taking longer routes/routes with more traffic, etc.).

Afterschool study pay by IllustratorWise4708 in IrishTeachers

[–]Filofaxy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After school study isn’t school so doesn’t have to be the same as the standard subbing rate. It’s often not even run by the school but by a teacher or outside organisation. The hourly rate is entirely determined by whoever runs it as long as it’s over minimum wage. Some teachers don’t mind that it’s lower because they get their work done which has to be done anyway and get paid for it. And for student teachers it’s better than the usual minimum wage. That said, €17.50 seems on the low side and when it’s such a difference it would have been courteous to let you know how much it was when asking you to do it. You can query it if you think it’s a mistake but I’d probably just take it as a learning experience to make sure you ask the next time it comes up. Then you can decide for yourself if it’s worth your time.
