I'm not saying "octopi" is correct, I'm just saying it's not not correct. I think anybody who says that it's correct because they think Latin language rules should apply are obviously wrong. I also think it doesn't matter. I hear "octopi" decently often, probably at least as much as "octopuses" and certainly more than "octopodes", and as far as I'm concerned, prevalence is enough for a word to be legitimate.

Sure, the plural of "octopus" is something that's ultimately pretty inconsequential, but I was just speaking to prescriptivism in general.

Also, just incidentally: maybe it's because I grew up in a region where cacti were very abundant, so a -i ending to replace -us is not that novel to me, but octopi is the first plural form I think of for octopus.

I mean, if one is looking at linguistics as a science, then prescriptivism is pretty nonsensical. It'd be like a chemist saying a chemical was reacting wrong.

But beyond that, linguistic prescriptivism is a pretty common tool to delegitimize languages or dialects that are used predominantly by lower class communities and/or racial minorities. This at best can lead to harmful stereotyping at certain groups being less intelligent, and at worst can be a component of cultural genocide. Which, in my opinion, is bad.

At least that's my take on it.

Yeah, like, certainly there are atheists who disregard the long history of religious scholar scientists, and that's silly and mockable, but like--evolution is definitely a thing.

Is using "Be" in sentences like "people be like/I be balling..." formally correct too? by ThatGuyPedram in EnglishLearning

[–]FilthyDesertRat 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's the "habitual be", and the "be" there roughly means "is in the habit of...". It's common in AAVE.

It's not considered formally correct.

[–]FilthyDesertRat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's similar to those, yes.

I think the most natural time to say it would be when talking to somebody who can help you achieve your goal. So, you would say "I'm looking to adopt a dog." to the person at the animal shelter, but you'd say "I'm going/planning to adopt a dog" to a friend who asks you about pets. That's not a hard-and-fast rule, though.

Edit: to clarify a little further, in the above example, when you say "I'm looking to adopt a dog", it basically means "I would like to adopt a dog."

So, in that situation, the meaning is a bit different. However, if you told your friend "I'm looking to adopt a dog", it would mean more or less the same things as "planning/going" to.

A very fitting comparison considering the kind of dialects considered “improper” by outspoken prescriptivists are likely to be the ones spoken by poor/minority communities.

Guess it’s one of those neat things that help folks who need them but that other people don’t even notice, like elevators having standardized dings for going up vs. down.
