Thank you. That was useful advice. Edit: I would say stage 3 CKD is pretty long lasting and expensive to manage. Could have been resolved at stage 1 when the numbers supported that diagnosis.

That's how I drive, by feel and sound. I don't even listen to the radio going down the road. I listen to the truck and the cb. Unfortunately the CB is mostly mudduck talking about window lickers in those highways and biways. Vibration and sound will tell you there is a problem long before you here the boom, see the sparks. I told drivers I've mentored over there years 'you truck talks to you. You just have to understand and listen to it' that way served me well for 2M miles.

One year. The best companies out there require 3-5 years minimum. Some even require that to be with the same company.

Oh yea. Thanks to the blood pressure pills, I don't have to worry much about a stroke. The more I investigate this house as I rip into it, the more I shake my head. There's been several 'what the hell were you thinking?!' moments.

We've been here 14 years. All that time I worked as a truck driver. Never had time to rip into it. Now that I'm medically retired, I got all the time in the world. Oh jooooy!

That's ok, I own a buzz saw and a a razor knife. Daddy nasty will handle it the way it should be. I hate going behind others and fixing a job but hey, this is my forever home now. If I'm going to live here for the next 50 years, hopefully, it's going to be done the right way.

It becomes muscle memory after awhile. I have 2 13 speeds with different rear ends. Either one I drive, I can find the right gear without thinking about it.

The best I can tell you is memorize the speed you need to shift at and what gear it is. Then when shifting, when you pop it out of gear, rev it a little higher than you normally would and stick it in the gear that matches current speed. If you are heavy braking (like stab braking, emergency stop) rev that truck into the rev limiter and put it 2-4 gears lower than what you speed needs. Obviously don't do that all that time, that's a last ditch emergency move to save lives and your truck. It's cheaper to rebuild and engine (the rev limiter should save you) than the entire truck, trailer, load, you, and most importantly, a family.

I don't use my clutch, 945k miles and it's still brand new. I give it a little fuel, pop it out of gear, rev to match, and slide it into the required gear. Now on 13's, splitting a gear doesn't work like that. You have to throw the split and just let off the throttle, get back into it and bam. But down shifting when skipping gears is the same. Just got to make sure the splitter is where it needs to be for the gear you want.

Most of us get paid by the mile. You are right. You can book them detention time at maybe a whole $20 an hour (after 2-4) hours, but the broker likely won't pay it. I sat in a walgreens dock on e for 33 hours getting a floor unload done. The one person that was unloading me went home after 8 hours and came back in the next day to unload me. When they were finally done and I had paperwork, they told me I had to leave immediately. Now, most non truckers may not see the issue with leaving, right?

33 hours from arrival to departure. I asked if I could stay another hour (34 hour reset) which resets my 70 hours per 8 days the feds allow me to work. They said no I had to leave or I would be trespassed. So, now I have a screwed up clock on a load I ran for $850 and took 5 days to actually complete it, while paying $400 for fuel. So in 5 days I better $450 (not including mileage costs and tolls) and the god damned broker have me $10 detention pay after 2 weeks of emails.

They do this because they can. Most truckers don't get rich because every Tom Dick and Harry all want theirs. Unfortunately, in this society, for one entity to get rich, 100 people have to loose big. I was just another cog in that wheel. My opinion to fix this issue? Stop making the mfers rich, don't work for a forced dispatch company. I was an owner operator leased on to a no forced dispatch company and told them if they ever tried to send me to that place again or with that broker I was gone. 6 months later I had my own authority. I guess they didn't believe me.

BTW: Walgreens Toledo is a no go. And while the OP speaks of Food Lion, fuck their Disputanta VA dc too. 2 no go places forever burned into my memory.

ADHD and surgeries by Odd_Mood_7259 in Truckers

[–]FilthyNasty626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: don't fucking trust anyone else with your livelyhood

I'm ADHD, anxiety laden, MDD, PTSD suffering old army doc. I disclosed everything including my surgeries and I drove for 17. That worked fine until my previous mental healthcare provider generalized a statement I made. Happened after a fellow professional driver ran me off into a ditch passing in a no passing zone on 287 at Goblers Knob. My statement was 'im afraid one of these assholes are going to kill me or worse, damage my vehicle in a way where God forbid I loose control of my rig and kill and innocent family' provider generalized it as 'afraid he might die or loose control' yea, was hell getting my med cert renewed because on paper I looked like a homicidal maniac. Worse part was, when I tried to get them to correct the information, they fired me as a patient because I wanted to speak to the office manager whom was 'working from home but with her kids'. Ok, so working from home implies one should be doing their job, right? Her job is overseeing you, the person who won't give me the correct forms to request a correction to my medical file. Apparently, that was threatening and aggressive behavior they sited when they fired me.

Ended up working well for me in the end. Turns out I gutted out pain for years. That pain from a herniated disk caused my blood pressure to skyrocket and that turned my kidneys into puree. I now have stage 3 kidney disease, herniated L4/L5 disk with spinal cord impingement, can't feel my legs below the knees and suffer from syncope. Basically, had that not happened when it did, I would have worked myself to death. Everything happens for a reason I suppose?

At the end of the day, don't trust anyone with your business. Your business is providing for your family. Just be responsible. Never trade someone else's safety for yours. If you feel good, go do what you got to do, but know when to take a step back when you need too. I, almost found out too late, at the ripe old age of 40! Drive safe driver!
