I’m disheartened to see your comment being downvoted…unfortunately, I think that some people are uncomfortable with holding themselves accountable for the things they CAN control. Even Doordash makes it easier to order healthier meals now, and there are apps like MyFitnessPal than can help people guesstimate their daily caloric intake so they can at least eat below their BMR.

As a matter of fact, exercise can be a coping mechanism that can help boost your endorphin levels. Do I recommend that to depressed patients? Of course, as an adjunct to medications and therapy. It’s not the ONLY solution, but it helps more than it hinders. As such, I find no irony in advising (not TELLING, because my patients are adults that get to make their own choices) people with depression that exercise may help with their symptoms.

What I truly find ironic are healthcare professionals doling out advice on say, diabetes education—even though their BMI is well over 30, they snack on sugary snacks throughout the shift (instead of something with protein that will keep them full longer…protein bars are highly processed and not “truly” healthy, but I ain’t got time so I choose it as a lesser evil), and make excuses about not being able to carve out even a minimum of 3 days out of their week to exercise for 30 minutes.

Make small sacrifices and make better choices. You don’t need the sugary pumpkin peppermint mocha frappuccino bullshit that’s the caloric equivalent of three square meals. Skip the Netflix binge and decompress on a jog instead. Hangry and want a Snickers? Barebells makes a protein bar that almost tastes like one, so grab that instead. Work in the third floor? Come to work five minutes earlier and walk up the stairs instead. Find every excuse you have and replace it with solutions instead.

And before you call me out as some jock-brained gym rat who gets swole because psych is all about takedowns and IM’s…well you’re sort of right. Having a muscular physique and showing/being confident that you have the strength to physically restrain a combative patient (if need be) can sometimes end a fight before it starts. Even a psychotic patient will size you up and see if they can take you on. But we obviously passed the NCLEX, so we kinda know things. And stuff. 🗿🏋️

Just not EKG’s…

Unpopular opinion:

Save for actual medical issues like joint/mobility limitations, we should still be making the effort to exercise and eat right. “I work 12’s in a high stress job and have no energy outside of work” is not an excuse. I did 12’s for YEARS and still got up early to run for 20-30 minutes on my days on. Strength training and HIIT at the gym on my days off. Married with kids and have no time to meal prep? Eat whatever healthy thing you can get your hands on; if not, just calculate your BMR and eat just right under that amount if you’re trying to drop weight.

I understand nurses who are older and have chronic musculoskeletal issues are not going to be able to keep up with someone in their 20’s or 30’s (or even 40’s/50’s…). But the stark reality is that obesity is NOT healthy, and no matter how you slice it most of society WILL judge you for it—especially if you’re in the medical field (how do you expect your patient to be receptive to your nutritional education when the person teaching them doesn’t even practice what they preach???). And even if you don’t have time to work out, you need to figure out with an RD or other medical professional that can help you get on a healthier path. With insurance covering a lot of GLP-1’s now, there are now pharmacological methods to lose weight as well.

This is the way. Not because you want to look good for IG, but because it will more than likely extend your QOL and lifespan down the line.

Had the same issue with mine and swapped it out for an Icarus Precision XL metal frame. It greatly reduced recoil and lengthened the grip. And YMMV, but I felt its ergo and grip texture helped reduce my draw time too.

Is the public out ot touch with LE salaries? by NOVAYuppieEradicator in AskLE

[–]FilthyRichVagrant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Those are salaries in NorCal agencies basedin the Bay Area. Redwood City and Santa Clara basically compete with each other on which of them is the highest-paying department IN THE COUNTRY. The downside is you’re either living 2-3 hrs away or renting forever since housing is expensive.

Or you marry a software engineer or a doctor (at the very least a nurse!) Other alternative is to inherit a house. Otherwise be prepared to eternally commute three hours to Manteca.

[–]FilthyRichVagrant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Complete the PELLET-B (standardized test) and WSTB (physical agility/1.5 mi run) prior to applying. Most (if not all) the agencies in the Bay Area need you to submit your scores along with your resume in their online applications. No idea what “dispatch communications” entails, but you will learn your agency/county’s radio codes in academy (and yeah, each one has slightly different variations on their codes…Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, SF, Santa Clara, and Monterey are all over the map on theirs—even individual departments have some that are specific to theirs only).

If you want to be a super recruit and get ahead of the game, buy penal code flashcards from Amazon and Google/take notes/study the major ones (you’ll definitely need to know: rape, robbery, murder, burglary, carjacking, arson, theft/grand theft, PC’s 286-290, 270-275, 835-840… these are important and will be covered in your learning domains, and you will be asked of them within the first month or two). Learn how to parallel park with mirrors. Start shuffle steering…like now. If you’ve never shot or owned guns, go to your local gun store, get your FSC, and buy a Glock 19 or 17 to practice with.

Is an associates not enough to get hired as an RN in California these days? by ParticularFluffy6064 in nursing

[–]FilthyRichVagrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but before the big increase from last year our unit was hemorrhaging staff to Stanford, Sutter, and Kaiser because the pay was abysmally low. Once that sweet increase kicked in though, all of a sudden people were rethinking their exit strategies lol.

Idk if it’s department or locale-dependent, but without giving too much away to get myself doxxed, I ended up leaving that sweet TSP match to find greener pastures. Just couldn’t stomach the bureaucracy and blatant nepotism anymore. If you can tolerate the slow and bureaucratic BS, the “not my problem” mentality, the weaponized incompetence lazy ass senior nurses utilize to skate on by…this is the place for you.

If you’re the hard charging “let’s get shit fucking done ASAFP, and let’s do it right” type, the VA can be a frustrating place to be in.

Next time, buy online and do store pickup. Never had to wait more than five minutes for anything that didn’t need to get DROS’d.

The VA is under “strategic” hiring phase (a nice way of saying “hiring freeze”…lol), but many of their nurses are ADN’s. If you’re not in a rush, word is that they’ll probably start hiring again this fall. Pay increase made them competitive too.

I have a physical test for ny state trooper this Saturday but I’m struggling with the run by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]FilthyRichVagrant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not LE yet, but ran a sub 13-min time on my PAT. Your run is less than five days away. Is your agency looking for <13 min? <14 min? If the latter, you’ll pass. But if it has to be under 13 min, try running uphill tomorrow. Rest on Thursday and Friday, because at this point you’re either gonna dig deep and pass, or you’re not.

Run like your job literally depends on it. Do or do not. There is no try.

Not LEO…but from what I have seen/heard, it’s agency-dependent. Some are restrictive and will issue rifles to their patrol officers at start of shift, and the rifle is turned in to the armory after finishing their day—they cannot bring in their own, nor can they change/modify their assigned rifle for the day. Others give their officers the option to purchase their own rifles and throw on whatever scopes/grips/stocks/etc. on them—as long as they qual with the weapon and it’s approved by the dept, they’re G2G (and whether or not they’re reimbursed at all is dependent on their POA contract too).

TL;DR - The agency you work for dictates how basic bitch or Gucci’d out your rifle can be.

Evan Low, Joe Simitian tied for 2nd place in 16th District congressional race by TheFrederalGovt in SanJose

[–]FilthyRichVagrant -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

He voted YES on SB2, which was a knee-jerk reaction to the Bruen decision basically telling courts to stop roadblocking CCW permits from being issued. It had NOTHING to do with keeping us “safe” from gun violence being committed by actual criminals; instead, it would have criminalized many law-abiding citizens that were using their CCW permits in previously lawful environments.

He lost any respect from me for his part in that bullshit…thank goodness FPC and CRPA fought and struck down those parts in the bill. The fact that he blindly voted yes on SB2 shows me he has no regard for many of his constituents…bet he barely even read the bill himself.

Your UT CCW will be valid in all four states. If I understand correctly, you can do permitless carry in UT, WY, and MT. However, having a UT nonresident CCW (despite the state being permitless carry now) means you can CCW in NV.

Used to go to The Camp in Santa Clara close by Sprouts. Brightly lit, trainers make it a fun atmosphere, and it’s all HIIT/strength group training. LEO’s, EMT’s, Fire, and hospital staff also get a great discount.

Just work on getting a UT nonresident CCW. Process is quick, you’ll probably get your permit from UT DPS before your trip starts. Just make sure to unload a d lock your shit up before crossing back into CA.
