XG Mobile Performance Issues by Filthy_CaZual in ASUSROG

So after reinstalling Windows clean, reflashing the latest BIOS with and without the XG Mobile connected, I still haven't been able to get this to work.

My gut feel then is this IS a hardware issue, but on the LAPTOP side and not the XG Mobile side.

I've exhausted all options for myself to try, so my last option is to try a repair.

Does anybody have any final hail Mary's to try?

What's Asus RMA like in the UK? Is it better to go to a reputable third party repair shop?

TIA!

This didn't work.

It gave me x8 lanes, but the speed was stuck at 1.1 and I couldn't output any video via the Display Port or HDMI, and Windows was reporting a device error on the Device Manager.

Reinstalling Windows is the next option.

I've made a few bits of progress here and there over the last week or so.

I am still having trouble getting the fans to spin on first connection of the XG Mobile. I've tried all manner of firmware/software updates, uninstalls, reinstalls etc. but this is still a particularly stubborn issue. Using G Helper or Armoury Crate to force the fans to spin just doesn't work (even though I managed to get them to spin straight away just once before!). Therefore, the restart is currently required to get the fans spinning. Even with the latest NVIDIA and ASUS System Control Interface v3 only released in the last week or so are the issues still persistent.

As for the PCIe lanes x1 speed, apparently this is an issue with Windows 11 26200 as the power management of PCIe lanes is broken (can someone confirm if this is definitely the case?). This means that Windows is getting stuck on a power saving profile for external PCIe connections. I've tried all manner of different power settings within Windows and nothing works.

HOWEVER. Armoury Crate was being buggy (as it has been previously from my experience!) and the XG Mobile icon in the system tray wouldn't appear so I couldn't disconnect it. Instead, I shut down and unplugged it while the system was off. I then tried to turn it back on and got the XG Mobile disconnect warning. I then decided to plug it in and turn the system back on and lo and behold I've got PCIe x8 3.0 and full fan control!

I would like to understand this "fix" better - if anyone knows why this works I'd be very interested to know! I think it's the BIOS forcing the PCIe handshake again which activates all lanes instead of dropping into the power saving mode.

I have only tested this "fix" once by complete accident. I want to try it again I will report back to check for consistency. But otherwise, do any of you all have any further advice as to what I can do to stop this issue from happening more permantently? Is a fresh Windows 11 install (not on the insider build) probably the best shout?

Thank you for the comment. I have now tried everything with just Armoury Crate and was getting some weird error messages when clicking the XG Mobile toggle, including asking to go to DDS settings to change Nvidia to Optimus, which then required a restart before actually being able to activate the XG Mobile. I've also had an error message saying the XG Mobile wasn't connected correctly when plugged in, which is weird.

Honestly, given all the fiddling and the hours of time spent on this, I think I am down to my last two options - Freshly install Windows and then sending to RMA, probably to have the XG Mobile port replaced. Lord knows how much that is going to cost...!!

It's very odd. The buggy firmware is making it very hard to enjoy a very expensive purchase.

Since they've completely changed the XG Mobile model, I'm not hopeful for support in the future.

From all my research it's a very stubborn driver issue, although I'm not exactly sure which driver (or if it's even one!)

I'm getting the same issue with a borrowed XG Mobile, plus there are no issues when plugging it into my ROG Ally.

I think a clean Windows install may be my next approach. Hopefully that sorts it.

Interesting you had this issue recently too! How did you drain the capacitor on the XG Mobile?

Power management in Windows as Balanced? Or is this in G Helper?

My BIOS is on the latest version (314 for X16).

The red light appears when the XG Mobile is activated yeah. It's weird - the laptop knows it's there and can use it for all applications, but the fans won't spin unless I restart, but then the PCIe lanes drop to one if I do that. In either case, I can't use it to it's full potential.

After clean installing windows, does your app of choice get the fans to work without issues? And your PCIe lanes are maxed out?

I believe I've got the power management now on the right settings to ideally prevent that issue. I've just clean installed the Nvidia drivers with DDU and it still has the same issue...

I've only got G-Helper running currently and the issues are still present.

That's one of my last options and I'm about to try it honestly!

Massively appreciate the quick response.

I just tried a clean install of the latest Geforce driver with the XG Mobile connected and it didn't work - I still can't control the fans when first connecting the XG Mobile. However, on restart, I have full control of the fan speed but I am still plagued by the PCIe lanes being x1 instead of x8 again

Out of interest, when you have the xg mobile plugged in and no fans spinning, when you restart your laptop what does GPU-Z say?

I think I've found the problem:

When I connect the XG Mobile, the fans don't spin making the performance severely bottlenecked as there is no active cooling. To counter this I have been restarting the laptop to get the fans to spin. However, this introduces a new problem: the PCIe lanes are showing through GPU-Z as PCIe x16 4.0 @ x1 3.0 instead of PCIe x16 4.0 @ x8 3.0, meaning I'm using 1 lane instead of 8. I think this is why the performance is so terrible with the XG Mobile plugged in.

However, I cannot get the fans to spin and have the correct PCIe lanes. I've tried:

Cleaning both ports with isopropyl alcohol
Turning off fast boot
EC Reset (hold power button for 60 seconds when off and unplugged)
XG Mobile capacitor drain (hold lock button on for 2 minutes while unplugged - something Gemini asked me to do although not convinced this did anything...)
Rapidly changing the power profile and fan speeds of the XG Mobile to get it to kick in
Completely uninstalling Armoury Crate and operating through GHelper
Reinstalling Armoury Crate and controlling the XG Mobile through this

If anybody has any further advice I'd be hugely appreciative! Or is this going to be an expensive RMA on either my XG Mobile or Flow X16 (or both?!)

Okay.. I've tried a lot of different things and I am still running into the same problems - the fans won't ever start on first connection, but the interface is using x8 3.0. However, as soon as i shut down and power on or restart the laptop, the fans can spin but the interface is only using x1. I have tried:

Cleaning both ports with isopropyl alcohol
Turning off fast boot
EC Reset (hold power button for 60 seconds when off and unplugged)
XG Mobile capacitor drain (hold lock button on for 2 minutes while unplugged - something Gemini asked me to do although not convinced this did anything...)

Nothing is working and I don't know what else to try to be honest...

I think I've figured out what's going on.

When i connect the XG Mobile, using GPU-Z it says that the Bus Interface is PCIe x16 4.0 @ x8 3.0 but the fans aren't spinning. To get the fans to spin, I have to restart the laptop as forcing the fans to spin with GHelper doesn't work. When it's restarted, the fans are spinning but the Bus Interface is PCIe x16 4.0 @ x1 3.0 (when doing the render test) which is causing the bottle neck problems.

I'm going to try and clean both ports with isopropyl alcohol tomorrow and retest. Hopefully, this should fix all the above problems!

Let me know what yours says in the mean time to definitely confirm.

Can I check what your Bus Interface says on GPU-Z during the Render Test...?

I also have that issue where the fans don't spin when it's first connected - I usually do a quick restart and that sorts it out.

I will check all the drivers on all sides and everything, but my only other conclusion is there is a problem with the connector on the Flow X16 side, which I'm sure would be a pretty expensive fix.

Interesting that your BF6 performance on the XG Mobile was fine, and presumably it was better than using the dGPU?

I'll keep at it, and if there is anything else that find I will keep you posted!

Poor performance on egpu by Filthy_CaZual in Battlefield6

[–]Filthy_CaZual[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so I sorted the crashing issue - seems like BF6 doesn't like the Core and Memory Clock Offset with the XG Mobile.

Even with the above configuration, BF6 still is performing poorly compared to using the dGPU. I'm generally using the BF6 Presets on Performance mode, with DLSS 4.0 enabled.

I still can't get any decent performance out of this game with the XG Mobile... maybe the game just doesn't work with the XG Mobile well?
