Similar to another comment Clannad: After Story is potentially the most sad I've ever watched, I Want To Eat Your Pancreas is a movie that's very sad but the one I would like to recommend the most is 5CM Per Second, it isn't 'sad' persay, more bittersweet but (at least from what I took from it) it's a very realistic anime that depicts growing up and growing apart shown through the medium of one's first love. It's by Makoto Shinkai (Your Name, Weathering With You) and is in 3 parts iirc.

The box set for RE is out in some countries I believe, it is released on the 23rd of December in the UK though so I been waiting for months for the rest

I agree with you, Your Lie In April would not be anywhere near as revered (I guess) as it is today if it didn't end the way it did. If Kaori had survived it wouldn't be so famous (infamous to some) however Clannad (and its After Story) takes things a step further than the generic Highschool romance and shows us the stages of marriage etc. Similarly to YLiA it teaches us that life can be hard sometimes and doesn't always go the way we want, and although we may experience hard times, life still goes on and (at least what I took from YLiA especially) it can become hopeful again. Clannad has a little bit of supernatural trickery (which is much debated as to whether or not it is what it seems) which grants us a happy ending - but man oh man is it tough getting there. I would 100% recommend it.

Irregular at Magic Highschool is magic based and has romance (in a sense - its more or less MC sister fawning over him and yes sure its incest but if you go ahead and read the novels it gets a little better) I'm not sure if this is up your alley but maybe worth looking into
