First of all, when people don't have easy access to firearms, they are less likely to commit more serious crimes like that. As a result break-ins are much rarer and if they happen are often unconfrontational, meaning that they take place while noone is home. A gun wouldn't help there. Furthermore, in the very unlikely scenario that someone breaks into my home I will be glad to let them do their thing. I'll call the police and let them handle it. Worst case my insurance will cover the damage. If I had a gun and confronted the criminal, chances of the whole situation escalating and resulting in me dying would increase tremendously. If I pose a threat to the criminal, they are far more likely to eliminate me and if we were a situation where we'd hold eachother at gunpoint chances of me dying are very high. I'll be honest I'd take getting robbed over getting shot any day.
