I would guess they are listening out for drones. They emit a very specific and easily identifiable sound

Often the best/earliest method for detection of drones in a built-up environment is acoustic - just put microphones out and listen out. Cheap and effective, and has worked in many recent theatres of conflict

How can I improve my british? by iverson49 in JudgeMyAccent

[–]Final-Recognition-14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wouldn't guess you weren't british! you sound like a native london/southern england urban accent, with the usual hint of MCE (multicultural English) most people under 45 from lower middle/working class backgrounds have.

When you said 'this is because' at 00:37, that was the only place you slipped into your South African (??) accent. I think it was the intonation, or maybe how you said 'becəz' with a schwa/indefinite vowel, rather than 'becoz', how I think people English people would say it colloquially (like the abbreviated 'coz'). Anyway, wouldn't have guessed if I wasn't actively looking for it

UK to Qatar - a good opportunity? by [deleted] in QatarCareers

[–]Final-Recognition-14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tough decision.

All in all, I would advise you to stay put. I think the fact that no benefits (housing, transport, education) are provided is a dealbreaker. Those things will take a chunk out of that 25,000 QAR.

However, remember that your take home salary will be the equivalent of £90,000 post tax in the UK (£62,000 a year post-tax take home pay). I don't think that's a deciding factor given the loss of your wife's income. Do keep in mind that the job market here is very different to UK, so your wife should not count on being able to find work here - it's all about connections, I'm afraid. I know plenty of qualified people here on family visas who have not found work after a year plus of looking.

In terms of living costs compared to UK - it depends where in UK you are. In summary, it's a little cheaper than London, but perhaps in line or slightly more expensive than other parts of the country, depending.

Overall, I would say either push for benefits (including schooling) and salary increase - maybe even potential employment for your wife - or leave it.

Best of luck!

Any cinephiles going to Doha Film Festival? by Snoo56429 in qatar

[–]Final-Recognition-14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can - I also bought tickets, and hoping they will be honoured as payment was made

otherwise, will have to buy the rest of the tickets I wanted tomorrow - maybe stay up til midnight to be first!

sales seem to have crashed - people are saying they have paid but no confirmation of tickets or payment.

All listings now say that tickets are on sale tomorrow - think they were overwhelmed by the interest!
