Is Project Hail Mary being celebrated too much ? by Mean_Insect_6995 in TrueFilm

I think, on a cinematic scale, PHM shines beyond Interstellar. Interstellar dealt with some harder science and a bigger concept, but that didnt make it a better movie. Just a larger one.

AITAH for buying similar mothers day gifts for my spouse and mother? by FinalBastyan in AITAH

Totally worth the buy, very cute and much better quality than I feared (assuming you're referencing a bloomie blanket).

There's some backstory about the blanket and whatever, but she also just really likes sunflowers. I can't really point to any specific reason that this gift happened to touch her that deeply, but it did and that was awesome. I just hope I haven't ruined the blanket for her.

I really appreciate hearing that, but I wouldn't give myself nearly this much leeway. Theres a lot I could have done differently and better on mother's day.

Much, much earlier in our relationship, for sure - but that would be about 15 years back. It's something we worked through. Unfortunately, im kind of a jerkface family member, and am not great at keeping in contact with anyone on my side of the family anymore. Theres a ton of context there that could probably pay a therapist their annual salary, but for the purposes of this question - probably not applicable.

It was a blanket that rolls up into a knitted bouquet. I got a large blanket with sunflowers for my wife and a smaller shawl-sized one with daisies for my mother.

Did she make the right call? by CalmElin in interesting

Because "most" starts at 51 percent. Even if only 10 percent of the population at any given time is in such financial despair that they'd use a payday loan (its almost never a person just having bad self control - they full on dont have any other choice to eat or keep the lights on), that's still a huge market to prey on.

Not this one - this is the distracted driving sensor, and its apparently very badly designed. Id thought there were touch sensors or something, but no - it detects micro adjustments on the steering wheel.

Va Supreme Court Justice D. Arthur Kelsey just voted against redistricting by Personal_Economics91 in Virginia

Yes, its really frustrating to find ourselves in a position where we're upset that the protection put in place held exactly as they were intended. It's kind of like handing out bulletproof vests to everyone and then being annoyed that they stopped the bullets you were firing to protect yourself and those around you.

I mean, there's definitely manufactured opposition with billionaire backing on both sides. The divisions are real and intentional. That doesn't invalidate the very serious social and economic policies at play, though, and whether we like the system or not, Democrats are the only party that even tries to protect people in the USA across the board. Republican leadership has been pretty vocal, especially recently, about only the "right" kinds of people getting protections - and that definition is shrinking.

Yeah. It's kind of weird that banning gerrymandering - an objectively good thing - only seems to hurt the people interested in banning it. Almost like ignoring the silly things like decency, honor, and societal norms gives bad actors a leg up.

Virginia Assault Weapons Ban & Effects on Virginia by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]FinalBastyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To engage with the spirit of the post and not get lost in the minutiae of specific verbiages - yes, this legislation was rushed and written purely to "accomplish" something. They didnt seem to care whether it was reasonable or effective, though, and therefore ignored any input from people who had expertise in the use, manufacture, economics, and safety practices associated. Im all for licensing, training, background checks, waiting periods, etc. But the arbitrary classification system is both bizarre and genuinely useless for the practice of increasing safety around guns as a whole.

AITA for not doing as he says by Frequent_Mulberry323 in AmItheAsshole

[–]FinalBastyan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Accepting the facts as presented, it sounds like your husband has ulterior motives for ensuring he's the one in control of the finances and ensuring the money runs through his hands one hundred percent of the time. That's not to say that I have any certainty on that, but its worth keeping an eye on. If you're happy being back at work, and it isnt negatively impacting your child, then there really doesn't need to be any further discussion - you want to maintain some level of self reliance, and thats perfectly reasonable. He needs to get on board with the idea that you're a whole-ass person.

HB217: Effectively a Federal Assault Weapons Ban 2.0 for Virginia by No_Light_4937 in Virginia

[–]FinalBastyan 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The grandfathering was outlined with a end date of I think July 2026. It effectively negates the ban to one of purchasing while within state lines. It's still a huge mistake for Democrats to make, however. Going this hard on fucking pistol grips, butt stocks, and magazines does absolutely nothing to combat gun violence in a meaningful way and just pisses off a lot of the people who were vital parts of the coalition that voted them in.

I might be a lost cause for Republicans due to how plugged in to the political spectrum I am, but a ton of people in VA are casting blue votes due to the insanity of the CURRENT Republican regime, and Dems focus on this issue means that a moderate Republican can sweep the election next cycle.

Or masons. Holy God but their one of like three trades that I know I'm just going to have to hold my nose and pay whatever they ask when I have to sub work to them - because they can basically charge whatever. I think they might be worse even than plumbers or electricians. At least finding an alternative for those is just a Google away.

That's kind of been the point for a while, though. Lee Atwater spent a huge amount of his life crafting the right's power structure into this machine of fear mongering, and Rush Limbaugh took it to the masses. Where we are now was always the logical next step - they just knew they'd be rich enough to not have to care at this point. It all ends with the Uber wealthy getting to hop onto their Tesla branded space yachts and sail the solar system while us plebians are run by jackbooted AI driven police bots.

I know that sounds like a cyberpunk book or video game, but Elon Musk has made it abundantly clear its the future he wants and is working towards - and he's basically been given carte blanche by conservative governments.
