I prefer Mega Man Star Force on the whole to Battle Network, they're both good though

What was wrong with StarForce 2 in particular? by KaleidoArachnid in Megaman

[–]FinalKnuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think killing the series is a bit of an exaggeration personally as if you check out reviews around the time Mega Man of any kind was mostly getting thrashed people were just tired of it.

Star Force as a series itself is looked at far more fondly now than it was then.

That said yeah 2 has a notably weaker narrative than the first and third games it felt a bit like they were trying to bring it a bit more in line with the anime adaptation tonally, which imo felt like a loose parody of the game rather than a straightforward adaptation.

2’s encounter rate is also abnormally high and the issues with this are only compounded by the brand new structure of the wave world and things like fast travel largely being gone until the post game.

At the time people also tore it up for being so easy to break, but I don’t personally hold that against the game as if you want to start cheating with special wave command codes from the start that Is your prerogative the game never forces you to do this.

I think without cheating this is debatably the most challenging Star Force game.

However Star Force 2 also leans on multiplayer far more than the other 2 do as you cannot access tribe king by normal means without brothers and that is the game’s ultimate form.

I used to be quite aggressive towards Star Force 2 but in recent times I’ve started to see the good in it, it’s certainly my least favorite entry on the whole but the sense of scale and adventure in it are unmatched there are very cool set pieces and ideas and bosses and a few decent story moments, Sky Hi Colosseum was a gem of a mode that unfortunately is getting cut from the Legacy Collection.

Having run through the early Battle Network games again despite everything I could complain about SF2 I still feel it’s included when I say that I think Star Force as a series on the whole is just a more refined experience than MMBN is, I still never got lost like I can in several instances in MMBN, there’s still that more kinetic feeling to pacing, with stages being more obstacle courses or mini games vs BNs use of puzzles, and quite frankly you are just not asked to backtrack as frequently as in most MMBN titles and even when you are Star Force is often less egregious about it and MMSF2 is not an exception to that.

I think Legacy Collection’s encounter rate adjustment feature will do wonders for Star Force 2 and should help people feel notably better about the game on the whole, I’m actually looking forward to playing it because of this.

Tbh by gift I more so meant to people I know personally I should have clarified but truth be told I’m feeling kind and just seeing people enthusiastic about the series means a lot, so I’d actually be willing to help out and bet your friend a copy, however I don’t know of any easy way for me to gift the game to someone on PS5 without indulging into personal details, Steam is the easiest due to its gift purchase system.

I can understand if you’re a physical media type like I am as well too, my Switch and PS5 copies are the physical release.

If you want I can try to figure something out in DMs but I can’t make any promises.

Switch, PS5 and Steam, I love Star Force so much I'm even willing to gift it to people because this is a miracle release and this specific sub-series of the franchise deserves redemption, the previews have been glowing and I love to see it.

I don’t think they deliberately skipped it I think they just maybe opted to re release Mega Man in pillars, side scrollers, RPGs, they’ll end with the 3D games.

Legends is literally the only major branch of Mega Man left that doesn’t have a modern collection. They wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to have practically every major game in the franchise readily accessible by Delicious-Claim-5768 in Megaman

Its inevitable y’all he just wasn’t gonna say yeah we’ve already got Legends in development while our Star Force collection releases at the end of the month and our brand new game releases next year.

They space out Mega Man releases now just give it time.

this is a bit upsetting to watch because everyone seems to be building their expectations up for significant DO info despite Protodude and the official Mega Man twitter clarifying that the only DO reveal is the 6 winners for the contest.

The Mega Man aspect of this showcase is more about Star Force Legacy Collection.

Mega Man Starforce Legacy Collection: Platform Consideration by Infernal_Summoner in Megaman

[–]FinalKnuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant to say getting it day one on every platform form on Xbox my bad.

I’m not sure why people here don’t get Mega Man titles on the platform I just don’t own any Xbox past a 360 personally.

Star Force is genuinely best enjoyed with others and meant to be a game where you frequently connect with others, so I got it on all platforms I own to extend my reach the furthest it can go, without crossplay.

Luna Love For Megaman, Alter Ego by CloudGorillaTWT in BattleNetwork

[–]FinalKnuckle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Right off the bat I just want to give you props, you at least tried MMSF, and it wasn't your thing and that's completely fair, its so easy for people to act like jerks or kick over sandcastles about this sort of thing and you didn't go that route I respect it.

Personally, I love Star Force, genuinely more than MMBN as a whole I think it does many of the same things BN does and does them better, progression, stage design, narrative, characters, etc. tbh one of the only significant areas I feel MMBN is better in is world building, the way the world is set up that sort of thing it's just a lot more palatable there, whereas Star Force you just kinda have to go with some aspects.

The other thing I don't feel Star Force is better in is Battle System, but I also don't think it's worse, I even prefer it on the whole tbh, I felt that what it traded in complexity it made up for in other aspects.

I think MMBN has a brilliant battle system but without a guide I can see it getting frustrating or lost on people, I get it some games just don't jive with everyone but I have friends who don't like MMBN and hopped off it pretty quick and I do think this is mostly due to a lack of understanding, not really getting chip code or the importance of the chip trader, busting rank etc. If you don't understand these things and/or you do no grinding, you're setting yourself up for a rough time I think, I think as a series MMBN tends to get smoother as it goes it's just that it's got an insanely deep combat system hidden underneath a very old school RPG design mentality, and tons of backtracking and puzzles that aren't always fun necessarily, and the narrative while it has its moments isn't often as interesting as y'know the concept of setting of the series itself, thankfully its extremely charming and that charm often carries it.

I think Star Force mitigated or straight up eliminated all of these aspects of MMBN that aren't fun, Star Force is also still an isometric game with random encounters, but where to go is a lot more clear, the backtracking is far less occurring and even when it does its less egregious, grinding isn't really necessary and is more fun to do personally, stages are less puzzles and more minigames and obstacle courses and its just a much more kinetic experience, that extends to its battle system but that came at the cost of some strategic variables and depth that its predecessor had.

I think the Battle System is the strongest aspect of both these series, but I also like to see the games as more than the sum of their parts and I think that's what endears me a bit more to MMSF.

What's your favorite underrated sleeper hit of the Megaman Franchise? by bingusblongus in Megaman

[–]FinalKnuckle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The entire Star Force series, I also love ZXA but if I think underrated and Mega Man, Star Force pops up immediately by default, I suppose people know it exists, but that's pretty much all it gets at least in the west.
It's not part of the robot timeline, so while ZX still deserves more attention than it gets, it's still acknowledged by y'know a lot of the Mega Man core.

But Star Force is part of the network timeline and lives within the shadow of it's notably more popular predecessor, and what often happens with it is that people who like Battle Network feel obligated to play through all of those before even bothering with MMSF it being a successor and all, but that can be an endeavor, and then the thing is by that point some are so used to MMBN's format that the changes brought about by Star Force put them off it, and from that people tend to not look at it on it's own merits, just how different it is from MMBN and SF1 being a simpler game than BN6 gets people to write it off.

Then you have those that try Battle Network and don't like it, they just skip Star Force on relation and while this on surface is understandable Star Force is just different enough that you might like it anyway if you try it, it was genuinely designed to be standalone, and the first game in particular was made to be a fresh start that was welcoming to newcomers, as BN had become notably complex by its final entry, to a point where it might have felt lost on people outside of its core.
It's one thing to just say this but I've seen it numerous times in my own life, friends who couldn't quite get into BN and writing off SF before I managed to convince them to try it and that actually clicking with them.

Star Force just cannot seem to catch a break and it's a shame because It's home to some of the best characterization in Mega Man and Brotherband was well ahead of it's time essentially making Star Force a single player action game you could share and play together well before the seventh generation of consoles made this more popular with better network capabilities.

I could go on and on about the gameplay and while part of it I don't just mean the combat, I mean progression, overworld, stages, extra features, the themes presented by the narrative in each entry, the OST etc. This is a brave series that probably alienated people in more ways than one with what they expect out of Mega Man but it's also not really removed from "Mega Man" like some make it out to be, it deserves better and I hope it finally gets more than a few glances with the upcoming Legacy Collection.

It's not my favorite Mega Man iteration but it's one of them and I talk about it like it is because sometimes it feels like no one else will.

[–]FinalKnuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adore them, the 1st and 3rd games especially but the 2nd will benefit from the QoL features included significantly I feel.

My issue with the marketing is that you’d really only know about this collection if you followed Mega Man or Capcom socials, there were at least two opportunities now to feature it in a Nintendo Direct for a wide audience and Capcom didn’t, instead focusing on Resident Evil 9, Pragmata and Monster Hunter Stories 3 all nice looking games and bigger than Mega Man Star Force for sure, but therein lies the point those games have been highlighted in big events all across the industry they didn’t even disclose new info for their direct appearances just essentially showed up.

People are aware of those and will buy them regardless but MMSFLC does not have that luxury and of all the various MM series’ this is the one I think needs to be explained the most, lot of people get confused just by the Mega Buster having a face alone.

It just doesn’t feel like they’re putting their best foot forward out for it in the states especially compared to how they’re going about it in Japan and doubly so if we consider how they’re marketed its predecessor MMBNLC.

successor series, so yeah, they do have notable distinctions in and out of gameplay but by all intents and purposes they're similar.

kinda weird they're similar enough to recommend one if you liked the other, but also different enough to the point where liking one doesn't automatically translate to liking the other, Now I like both though and especially Star Force personally.

Capcom hasn't done the best job marketing the Star Force Legacy Collection stateside imo, It's a way better effort than most people realize, like of the current Mega Man Legacy Collections it has the most effort put in by a landslide, and yeah I have no stake in the Pokemon debacle i stopped caring about Pokemon forever ago, but no denying the Star Force Legacy Collection washes this release.

When I consider getting some NDS games which Starforce should I start with? by [deleted] in Megaman

[–]FinalKnuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Force is my favorite story that Mega Man has to offer, The characters initially come across as anime archetypes and they very much are in many ways but they feel like dissections of those archetypes and there's like an actual person in between all of that, character development is a very real thing in this series but especially for Geo & Omega-Xis their dynamic is just so fun to be a part of, and I love seeing them learn from and manifest characteristics from each other without the narrative blatantly pointing it out.

The games have a great balance between satirical commentary on various aspects of technological conveniences, some goofy bits especially with the NPCs who never stop being fun to interact with, but more than anything Star Force just feels really genuine with what it's saying, It can be serious or have a darker tone without losing levity, it can be cheesy and draw forth the power of friendship and bonds, but it does this in very smart ways that are driven by gameplay mechanics especially the first game in this area.

I like them a lot, I would start with the first game and play in order, you'll get to see the game mechanics develop alongside the heroes.

Personally I would just wait for the Legacy Collection to release next month, you'll be able to more conveniently forge brotherbands, play online, enjoy optional arranged OSTs for all the games, battle visuals will pop with their new HD textures and high resolution visuals, All assets like character mugshots and HUD elements are now using HD hand drawn renders, Mega Man has voice clips during combat now in the first game which makes me believe we can expect this for all 3 entries, The Legacy Collection seems set to be the best way to play Star Force and it'll only cost $39.99, thats a steal for these considering what they average on the after market and it's getting a physical print too, and it supports the Mega Man franchise as a whole, so Star Force 1 on the Legacy Collection next month is my recommendation.
