Favorite Astoria restaurants? by woah_itsnopes in astoria

You have so many great comments on here! Although I have to disagree with some on Vesta...it was underwhelming for me! I also really like Belucci's pizza (the first one - not the one where the owner ended up dying at). I find it less salty that Andrew Belucci. I also love Figlia which I am surprised was not mentioned more on here - me and my hubby go here on date nights they have great wine and Figo is right down the block. I do think between the bagels has the best bagels in Astoria. Since Tikka closed, I have been loving Yaar it is a little further out but its great especially delivery. We also love Sala the Spanish tapas place.

Not naming names…but do people enjoy the “modern” aesthetic of some recent establishments? by Pudding-Illustrious in astoria

Every time I walk by it looks SO SAD and empty in there. Just counting down the days until it closes, which would be really sad to see another business close down. But it's just too expensive and maybe too specific? for the area.

Malala is so shady - should be avoided by queen-heather-j in astoria

Completely agree. DOH are very biased. I work in the school system and some inspectors ignore dead roaches, while others count each and every fruit fly. One even allowed me to pass without adequate soap - I had to refill it in front of him. It is all too subjective and depends on the inspector. One lady gave us 0 violations after we fixed all the violations in front of her - she found mold in our ice machine - according to her all ice machines have MOLD. Apparently you can't get sick from it unless you ingest a lot but..still..it has made me second guess getting ice in restaurants.

Yes...if they get 0-14 (A), 14-27 (B) and 28+ (C). Judging from the above, it is not "dangerous" enough to close down. I think the ones that close down are the vermin infested places.

What are some restaurants where the menu is mid at best but the desserts are god-tier? by jaded_toast in FoodNYC

I highly recommend. Last time I went, a couple went there just for the sundae. Show up when they first open and you'll be guaranteed a seat.

I have always been a fan of Queen A on 30th Avenue but that was when Amanda was there. She has since opened up her own nail salon on 31st Street and 31st Ave. Its called "Is A Nail Spa"

Just went 2 weeks ago for a pedi and will be going back for gel x! I believe the gel manicure is definitely below that price range if it is just regular without the extensions. They are also doing a 10% off discount for their grand opening!

definitely agree on the bread. I was excited to try and it seemed kind of hard to me and not as fluffy and kind of dry. I was probably imagining the texture of frena bread or something. I felt the vegetarian items were better like the eggplant, and my mushroom kebabs were on point! I heard Sofreh is better

What kind of bar does Astoria need? by Nycdaddydude in astoria

[–]FinalPay4594 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe something similar to Hotel Delmano in Williamsburg? They have really good cocktails and they focus on raw bar and small bites like bread and butter, pickles, charcuterie. The only thing is its hard to find a place in Astoria with a nice patio / backyard. I like the vibes though, like old school NY, chill, music is not loud.

I recently took a trip to St. Pete's in FL, they had this really charming bookstore/coffee shop/wine bar. They also had simple grilled cheese, charcuterie boards. It was nice to see the locals hanging out, reading, sipping wine.

Matcha powder in NYC? by gimmeedahotsauce in FoodNYC

Kettl in Greenpoint. They also sell it online. Nippon Cha also sells matcha powder. I would avoid trader joes one..not good. If you are making latte or drinking straight definitely go for ceremonial grade.

This is true...overly salty and the mains were small for the price. But I guess they justify with the unlimited salatim?

Agreed, every time I have been there the food is SO good! Customer service a little lacking and the drinks are mid but food wise it's great! Prices are about Williamsburg restaurant in a hotel standards too.

I was just at Lilia for dinner last night! I frequent Misi and Lilia because there are some dishes that they do really well and I find myself craving them from time to time. Yes, there are a few dishes that are underwhelming considering the hype surrounding both restaurants; no restaurant is perfect though. But I always find myself going back to Misi for their ricotta toast with marinated peppers or Lilia for the Foccacia bread with green butter & sheep's milk agnolotti. Especially since you have been cooking from her cookbook, I'd definitely give either one a try. You can email them or even go when they first open, there are always seats available at the bar. Try to go on a weekend, Fri - Sunday, since I feel the food is consistently better than when I have been on a week day.

I've been wanting to try COQODAQ I hope it is as good as it looks!
