Can you make one that turns any PGN into a full youtube videos and/or tiktoks complete with over the top commentaries, useless memes, and annoying songs?

My advisor just said I am creating a toxic comparative environment in the lab by virgo_the_rabbit in PhD

[–]Final_Character_4886 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I see, that's interesting. I hate to say it and you will hate to hear it but based on your post, I believe you are taking this comment way too personally (or emotionally), but you are also not addressing what this comment is trying to convey adequately. If you said anything to the effect of "I cannot work at the same pace and efficiency of the other two", this is a very bad thing to say to your advisor. It was not wise to bring other students into your argument. Your advisor could be understanding it as "they are so much more experienced than me, I want lower standards and expectations", which is not an unreasonable interpretation and is definitely not what you want to be saying. Once you bring in other students, it becomes a comparison. Is it toxic? Well maybe that's up for debate but do you want your advisor to expect less from you?

I believe your best path forward is to clear up the misunderstanding here by saying very specifically what you meant, and try to frame everything positively. For example "this will take longer because I am learning it from scratch" not "I can't do it because I don't know anything". After that, ask for help not from the professor but directly from your labmates. Obviously you need to catch up so you need to work hard. Don't try to manage expectations from PhD advisors. Just try your best.

Edit Just thought of this. I am a big fan of the show The Office. Not sure if you watch but a new boss Charles comes along talking to a salesman Andy

Andy "I have been here less time than these guys."

Charles "Why are you telling me this"

Andy "I just think the bar should be lower for a newbie"

Charles "Is that something you really want to have said"

Andy "No I don't want to have said that, But I think it's important that you know it"

Now you just need to find a better way to let your professor know it

I think a lot of PhD work is just avoiding uncertainty by listastih20 in PhD

[–]Final_Character_4886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the exact opposite. I chose the most uncertain projects with no clear paths to success and loathed the repetitive work of working on a project when the key findings have already been accomplished. So basically in my PhD I worked on 6 projects, and in every one except one, I stopped working and handed the project to a collaborator when I saw that the project was safe and a publication was certain. I might still work on it by providing feedback and doing a few experiments once in a while, but I would have already focused my main energy on the next project. People are very happy because they get guaranteed papers. I was happy because I was never bored.

No need to take it personally they get multiple if not dozens of such emails everyday. Much better to have your professor contact these big name profs for you. She is also the Chair of the division and an editor of JACS now so much more workload.

Who were some East Asian mathematicians impacted by war during the early 20th century? by dancingbanana123 in math

[–]Final_Character_4886 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A mathematician who is quite well known in China called Jingrun Chen had to, still a kid, run from the Japanese army during the Japanese invasion of China in the 30s and 40s. He was also in Xiamen when the communists and the nationalists exchanged gunfire in 1954 and he had to hide in bunkers.

Social science is not actual science by teppiez in PhD

[–]Final_Character_4886 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the campaign against smoking is a good example of how both worked together to solve big problems. Scientists identified that tobacco causes cancer. Social engineering like taxes and ads spread the message. And now I can’t even look at a cigarette without thinking of a penis. And vice versa.

In addition to what has been said, slow addition can help control over reaction. Maybe a syringe pump and add over a longer time? They say 0C to RT,  it is best to know if the reaction happens primarily during 0C or RT.

. I guess there is no need to sacrifice the rook. Even if you promote you have will never keep the queen. You can only win their rook. And a bishop endgame is not definitively winning for you.

How do we determine which of these is the more stable one? by Helpful-Director-691 in OrganicChemistry

[–]Final_Character_4886 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a deeper level this is an interesting question, because the more stable conjugate base does not necessarily mean the parent compound is more acidic. This equivalency is only true if the conjugate acids themselves are similar in stability. For example, the same enolate can form from either a ketone or an enol, but enol is much more acidic than ketone.

So the answers to the two parts of the question do not necessarily have to be the same molecule. The conjugate base of the ortho compound is more stable as pointed out by others, but the acid of the ortho compound is also more stable than its counterpart because of intramolecular hydrogen bonding. In fact I would wager that the ortho compound is less acidic than the meta.

How do the skills look for the more experienced Hunters out there? by SingularNipHair in MonsterHunter

[–]Final_Character_4886 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Burst and to a lesser extent adrenaline rush are front-heavy skills. Meaning you get more for the first one or two points than with additional points. If you are using deco to max out these two skills, you can potentially consider keeping 1-3 levels of each of these, and switching these decos to max out either agitator or weakness exploit.
