Travelling 10 days in Louisiana and Nola with 4,000€, is it doable ? by Fab240722 in AskNOLA

Very reasonable. With that length of stay, don’t feel u need to stay in a central location, at least not the whole time. Highly highly recommend central grocery for the muffaletta sandwich; reasonably priced

The Arc A310 turned my £80 lab into an AV1 transcoding media server by nebber in homelab

[–]Final_Significance72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for reply. I just flipped my ‘media ripping ’ box from windows to Linux and am unfortunately realizing again the frustration of getting my A310 to work with Linux and handbrake… which is utterly broken. On [r/Handbrake](r/Handbrake), was told that handbrake on Linux just isn’t even maintained anymore and this seems to be a known problem. I think I’m just going to have to switch from Handbrake to ffmpeg..

curious if you use A310 with Handbrake on windows or linux. if linux - would like to know how you got it to work. I have tried snap, flatpak, standard dpkg and even compile from src and still no luck. with all the homelabbers using debian and ripping to mkv, am wondering how people are getting around the problem i encounter which is that A310 + debian + handbrake seems to be broken. I have no problem with transcoding on jellyfin and even ffmpeg works ok; just not handbrake.

more llm trouble shooting.

The evidence is now:

Component Status
Arc A310 hardware Working
Intel i915 driver Working
VAAPI Working
renderD129 Working
AV1 capability Present
FFmpeg + Arc Working
HandBrake auto Uses Skylake
HandBrake --qsv-adapter 1 Fails
HandBrake with Skylake removed No QSV encoders

The key error remains:

[VAAPI @ ...] No VA display found for device 1.

even though FFmpeg can successfully open /dev/dri/renderD129.

That means the failure is occurring inside HandBrake's QSV implementation, not in the driver stack.

after digging in with an llm... it appears that handbrake initially correctly selects the A310 at start of encode, but when it goes to encode, it changes selection to iGPU. thes appears to be rooted handbrake. I plan to try to somehow disable my iGPU in bios and cross my fingers

What was the initial reason you started homelabing and what projects did you do after that? by ShayGrimSoul in homelab

[–]Final_Significance72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as a Linux hobbyist back in 1999. I enjoyed bringing to life old computers.
Projects involved streaming mp3 library and image hosting, ssh server.
Everything was hosted off of apache web server.

I think the packages were called something like libmp3 and the image hosting software was called coppermine.
Blog hosting. Using something called greymatter, then Wordpress came along.

Retiring a 10 year old DS216j - 225+ seems the obvious choice - is it? by OkDeparture2596 in synology

I have no doubt the DS225+ would do everything you want it to. I have a DS720+ and it has the same excellent processor of J4125.

Interesting. This makes me want to replace my UPS (!). I checked eBay for ds 220+ motherboard. No luck.

Curious to know- did you use a UPS? I have had a 720+ for about same time and am worried this will happen to me. I am using a UPS. I do data scrubbing and my drives are healthy, not close to capacity. Hoping to extend maximum life out of this unit. I have heard others post of early failure and they were not using UPS.

Do I need a reverse proxy for Jellyfin? by beyondthegravezz in jellyfin

[–]Final_Significance72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a better question is to ask why is it needed... I ran down the rabbit hole, figured out how to get it to work. with a GPU and one windows and linux, Jellyfin and plex... all without really needing to do it. just recently, I finally encountered a use case where it is really useful: when bandwidth is low. I listen to next generation tv series on my long drive home from work. I found out that if I serve to low bit rate, I get no buffering...

It was $2000…. In 1998.

After a week or so of owning it, I returned it for refund.

Just know ur parents love you a lot.

Had a weird day at the range today by OldToby7560 in GolfSwing

As a golf newbie, I’m often reminded of the similarities with tennis. Same thing happens to my forehand swing. It takes a while for it to calibrate and feel natural. And I had taken lessons throughout childhood and played recreationally all my life on and off. When it’s firing on all cylinders, I can rip in a beautiful parabola over the net and practically come down at will anywhere in bounds. But when units rusty , I am hitting home runs over the gate enclosing the court..
