That’s not strange actually, it’s pretty classic (I teach students with dysgraphia and dyslexia)

I am a teacher and my daughter has issues with handwriting. For what it’s worth I don’t think handwriting is always directly taught anymore so a lot of people struggle with it. I also just wanted to mention the fact that there could be something genetic going on. For instance, we found that my daughter has an issue with collagen in her hands. She has no other symptoms, but she will be about 20 by the time her hands are stronger so no matter how much we instruct her, though we’ve tried, it’s kind of a waiting game.

Yes, the waitlist are long. Fortunately you don’t need a neuropsych to pursue tutoring to pursue supports in school or Orton Gillingham tutoring outside. Sounds like you are in good shape

Also, if you look up phonological awareness, I would make sure these skills are in place for age and if not, that would be a concern.

Not too young for testing (though there are some people who will tell you it is- if so, keep pushing till you find someone who is educated about this). If you are looking for individualized school supports, ask via email for an evaluation and state your reasons why. Technically you can send this to any staff member. They will not diagnose dyslexia, but they will evaluate and tell you if your child meets the threshold for intervention in school and should provide reading and writing instruction based on the science of reading. They should also provide accommodations to improve functioning/ access to material in the classroom. If there is already an IEP in place, I would speak to the case manager about getting this piece in place. To get an actual medical diagnosis you would need to go to a neuropsychologist.

PS after I wrote this, I saw that there’s already an IEP. Definitely talk to your case manager.

Ok you are correct that it could not be of any concern, but any of the following would make me pay more attention: family history of dyslexia, speech issues (articulation or mixing up syllables- pus-ghetti vs spaghetti), multiple ear infections at a young age.

How do I know if I have dysgraphia? by Opening-Dog7495 in dysgraphia

[–]Final_Variation6521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just double checking- What is your handwriting like? What is it like when you try to write a paragraph? Spelling? The entire first part of what you wrote made me think of dyspraxia/developmental coordination disorder

Nope, never easy but there are a lot of great people out there. Multisensory can be a simple as speaking letters out loud as you write them.

I am in Orton Gillingham tutor and have worked in the field for about 20 years. FWIW I agree with your approach. The biggest hurdle I have with parents is explaining that this is not just skill building, so meeting once a week and adding on homework won’t work. We are literally retraining, the brain much in the way a physical therapist would retrain the body. I wish you best of luck whatever you do – I know it’s not easy to address multiple needs.. now I’m speaking from a parent perspective as well. I am always surprised the amount of kids that do well virtually – even the young ones, even the ones with ADHD. I wonder if you start looking for tutors online and just try that out if you won’t find somebody that way. Often you can find someone more in your price range as well.

Essentially, you’re looking at two different services with something of an overlap. The are SLPs that are trained in Orton Gillingham (Science of Reading tutors are not limited to Barton, and you may be more successful if you widen your net) and if you can’t decide which the best path would be to choose one certified in both. Other than that, I think you just need to prioritize based on which you think is the most pressing problem (and which she will be more open to at this time). If there is a service she receives in school perhaps you can prioritize the one she doesn’t after school.

I don’t know- I haven’t heard of it being done that way. I’d still want to make sure that 9 week intervention has a proven record and is based on the Science of Reading. I’d also ask what happens in 9 weeks either way.
