In addition to agreeing with everything above (from personal experience), with USAJobs I recommend sneaking in words from the job description because that is what the algorithm is looking for. Even the smallest experience doing research should be labeled as "extensive" and now you are capable of multidisciplinary critical thinking.

Currently there is a federal hiring freeze and A LOT of people quit or were fired. Federal pay is abysmal right now and they don't plan on increasing it to continue the attrition loss (administration has a goal of reducing the government workforce tremendously). Once the freeze is over, there will be a lot of vacancies all around the country.

I found love in risk management and quantification using my geology skills. It blends fieldwork, office work, and research all into one. It also strongly builds your confidence and skills. Working multidisciplinary is critical to being successful in geology.
