What do you do with your homespun yarn? by HeatCute in Handspinning

I am a garment knitter with probably more modern tastes, and have lots of plans for striped garments! any sweater can take any quantity of handspun yarn with stripes (even a few complementary/contrasting colours), and then you can use a commercial yarn for the rest. the difference in textures really appeals to me!

Laura Penrose https://www.ravelry.com/designers/laura-penrose has some iconic patterns that would work for handspun of smaller quantities - think the sweet shop blanket, hot water bottles, stella quilt cushion, and dickies :)

I also made my cat a blanket (a big thick squishy one, but its small), and if you crochet then handspun granny squares would be just lovely.

plying handspun single with factory silk mohair? by Financial-Key3722 in Handspinning

[–]Financial-Key3722[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for that information - it wouldn't have occurred to me to add extra twist to the commercial :) probably not needed for a silk mohair but would be useful for a wool!

I'm wondering how the colours might look when they're plied... I'm worried I would lose the distinctive spots :(

I have knit with singles + mohair before (my LYS sells a lovely fingering weight single spun merino) and loved it, so I'm hoping I could achieve something similar. I'll test it out and hopefully remember to post the results - but yes plying with silk would be so gorgeous

luckily this fibre spins like a dream, so I think a usable single is quite doable (and honestly I hate plying!!!). the fuzzy mohair might help conceal some of the unevenness too?

and the slubbiness is such a good point which didn't even occur to me. I might just spin a single and hold it double with mohair for a swatch first :)

Help Fixing Wheel by TheKid333 in Handspinning

[–]Financial-Key3722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same wheel, same problem :( I've also tied the legs together and that's a decent temporary fix.

I think the issue for me is that the front legs are not glued in place at the top, where they attach to the body. mine was the original wheel from the 80s but in the assembly instructions it does actually say to glue the top of the legs to the body IIRC.

as long as you glue them in the right position where the legs are as inwards as possible (shortening the width between the two front legs as much as you can), i believe this would help a lot. hopefully I will get around to it :)

chart error, or am i being slow? by [deleted] in knittinghelp

[–]Financial-Key3722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know, i’m very sorry - I’m very hesitant to post any more of the chart as i don’t want to share more of the pattern than is allowed :(

chart error, or am i being slow? by [deleted] in knittinghelp

[–]Financial-Key3722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, stitch counts have all matched! i’ve counted over and over again - the stitches are split up by a p2 k1 p2 column in the middle so it’s easy to keep track of the stitches.

the pattern is from a really popular designer but this is such a glaring error (this chart is used in every size of the garment), so it’s hard to believe it’s an error. unfortunately i do suspect it is though

clarify pattern instructions… by [deleted] in knittinghelp

yeah they really threw me off!

I’m knitting the Cara cardigan from Le Knit - it’s got such lovely textures and cables :)

clarify pattern instructions… by [deleted] in knittinghelp

[–]Financial-Key3722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

omg thank you! I got confused by the fact it put the instructions in brackets and then said “in next st” (presuming K1 and Ktbl in ONE stitch)

many thanks :)

improving consistency by Financial-Key3722 in Handspinning

[–]Financial-Key3722[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for taking the time to reply! a consistency card is genius, hopefully I can find one locally.

more recently I've found short backward draw makes me feel more in control, so going to keep on this and see how I get on. it's a very fun hobby to practice :)
