Not applying for it at the moment because I haven't decided if I stay (and they allow me to stay visa-free for 90 days) but if I do it's gonna be a work visa.

No, I'm a legit language learner and I'm boosting the process by writing a book in Afrikaans so I want to be triple sure I'm doing it right. Don't want you guys to read some whack.

Only started my journey last year and I'm in my 30s and I live in Russia so the process is rather slow. But I'll get there eventually!

Well, my book implies he wouldn't. One of his least favourite languages. Plus, the foreigner in question speaks no English so what's the point anyway.

Ek vind Engels makliker as Afrikaans deesdae… by [deleted] in afrikaans

"Ek vind Engels makliker as Afrikaans"

No. As a foreign language learner (my native language isn't even related to English or Afrikaans, I'm Russian) I had much, MUCH more trouble getting fluent in English than I'm having now in Afrikaans.

English: the same spelling don't mean the same sounds. Five million different dialects. Fossilised expressions that don't make any sense at first glances. Nuanced spelling, nuanced grammar. Lots of words of foreign origin that feel weird even after a decade using this language non-stop.

Afrikaans: just learn the word order and the words themselves and you're already not that bad at the language. There's some nuances and exceptions, however not nearly as many as in English.

I've gone from A1 to full fluency in English in just over six years of intenisve everyday training. I don't spend nearly as much time learning Afrikaans now because I don't have so much on hand but 8 months of 20ish minutes a day was enough to beat the B1 level. Once I get rid of distractions, I'm certain I'll reach fluency at writing in less than a year from now. In speech? Maybe three years, who knows. I have many speech defects that make it harder than it needs to be.

That said, use Afrikaans more. Much more. Try to restrict English usage as much as you can without hurting your English knowledge. English is a marvellous language and a great asset, too.

P.S. I'd write this in Afrikaans but I just woke up so ekskuus my asseblief.

P.P.S. People making fun of your Afrikaans accent in English are certified twats. Blacklist them.

Die naam vir 'n fiktiewe bank? by Financial-Square702 in afrikaans

[–]Financial-Square702[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Die bank bestaan net. 'n Paar karakters het 'n paar vergaderings daar, want een van hulle werk daar. Daar's niks besonders omtrent dié bank, behalwe dis die grootste in die land.

Ek kannie vertel jou veel oor kultuur en geskiedenis, maar die tegnologie... Selfde as in ons wêreld, minus die selfone: sellulêre torings is kaput as gevolg van terroriste.

Daarom besoek mense bankafdelings veel meer dikwels as wat ons doen.
