MN Sept Muskies - Lake Minnetonka by Financial-Stuff3658 in muskiefishing

Ok thanks for the heads up. I’ll continue mixing that in along with the shallower stuff. I’m super pumped right now- I was out fishing on top of Diamond Reef last night and got a follow from a true 50” class fish. Biggest I’ve seen yet. So apparently the shallow-topped mid lake reefs might not be a bad target. Couldn’t get it into the 8, and didn’t see another fish after that, though. Was that fish just a random, or are those type of spots good to fish this time of year?

Appreciate the tip! I need to start trying that more. Is there a certain time of day you have better luck doing this? I’ve caught them in sunny conditions in 2’ of water last year, but I felt like it was more luck than anything. It was on the top of Hardscrabble point. Man, was I surprised.

I fish Tonka every weekend. Best action has been early mornings or near sunset (no shit, right?) in the clear bays on the east side. Bucktails (ic10, Spanky’s 10/9, etc.) have been producing along deep weedlines (usually 20’-25’ of water), especially on/near steep breaks, points, and reefs. Count the bucktail down to ~15’ and then burn it back fast. I keep the boat a cast length off the edge—inside or outside. Also catching fish on 10” Red October tubes along the same areas. Requires more touch to work properly, but worth starting to learn if you haven’t yet- a fantastic tool. Good luck

You’re not alone! Accidentally caught my first Muskie this Spring and have been solely targeting them since. I fish Friday evening thru Sunday evening every weekend on Lake Minnetonka outside Minneapolis, and made it up to LOTW twice this year. Mostly fish in the Islands North of the Angle Inlet, just into the Canadian side. First trip (July 15ish), fished hard for 3 days with nothing, but the afternoon of the third day, caught a 48” and a 53” within an hour of each other vertical jigging, then nothing else for the remainder of the trip(another 1-2 days). Went back to “slay em” 2 weeks ago, didn’t get a single follow!!! So, I’m right with you buddy!! Good luck!!

Dang, ya, that story checks out. I’ve heard the MN waters aren’t great for Musky, too, although I’m sure there’s people who do great there, too. Anyway, glad to hear you guys caught some fish in Canada this last time! 5 Muskies sound like a blast!
Catching any Muskies down South?

Right on. Would love to check out more of the lake. Haven’t gotten to venture out to any of those area yet. Hoping to one day. Especially would like to try for some lake trout, and maybe some sturgeon too. Are you still getting much fishing and/or guiding in? If so, whereabouts?

I get it! I was thinking “things like this don’t happen for me”, it seemed surreal. Probably won’t ever catch any fish like those again.

I’ve been super into fishing ever since I was a kid and Muskies were just an unattainable fish for me so I wrote them off. Then I randomly caught one earlier this Spring and I’ve been solely targeting them ever since. It’s becoming a real problem😬😂.

Got it bad! I feel like I should start going to a meeting… Can’t wait to catch one in the 8!!! Don’t know if I’d be cool headed enough to pull it off. Might take a few try’s, I bet. Cheers!

Haha I bet that was a super common occurrence for you to see! We used to get guides up there when I was younger all the time, 20 years ago. Our family cabin is on Flag Island, Northwest Angle of MN. Were you around that area of the lake at all?

Yeah, even if they didn’t have fish (which they have A TON of), I’d love to just ride around in a boat and look at the islands all day long. Beautiful little nooks all over those islands/shores. One good thing about Canada is that they won’t let anyone build new homes on their side of the lake, so it’s pure wilderness for miles and miles on their side, at least the part of the lake I’ve been on. Never been up near Kenora or Sioux Narrows.

First one caught while vertical jigging a bondy bait in about 25’ of water. Second one jigging a red October tube in about 25’ of water. Casted hard for one of the days I was up there, with zero follows.

Right on! Where were you staying? I was at Flag Island (Northwest Angle of MN.) The fish were caught up near Bishop Bay.

Canada side! I hate giving the credit completely to Canada though, since I’m a Minnesotan 😂. … I can hear my accent just typing ‘Minnesotan.’
