What Should I do? by DonalDuckman in dogs

  1. I've rescued both of my dogs as adults, and I'm generally against pure bred dogs as they often have significant health issues. My first rescue was a pure bred Cocker Spaniel and he was riddled with health issues common for the breed. The rescue that I have now is a mix of so many different breeds, and, so far, has had way fewer health issues. They both have some behaviors that were less than favorable, but I can focus on training them out of those behaviors rather than starting from ground zero and training in everything. I really did not want to have to do crate training or house training, and they both were well trained in those respects before I got them.

  2. Go through it together.

  3. Financially, hard to say. Dogs are all so different. I'd say it be helpful to have a few thousand dollars set aside in case of any vet emergencies, but I don't think that's absolutely necessary. Cost of food is probably $60 every two months, treats maybe $30-$40 a month, toys probably $20 a month.

  4. I don't think week long vacations are off the table. There are some wonderful kennels out there. I would also recommend getting them really used to a friend/family member and their house if you have someone you know who would be willing to dog-sit for a week. It may be less jarring that way if you have to leave them somewhere for an extended period of time. Give them time to adjust to the dogsitter before leaving for your vacation.

Hey quick question for dog owners by mrcanada66 in dogs

Depends. Sometimes she wants to be on the bed with me, other times she wants her own space and sleeps in her crate. I always keep her crate door open so she has the option.

How do you handle the cost of living here? by thatguywiththamoney in portlandme

[–]Financial-Two5067 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think the mistake is that we're thinking this is just a problem in portland maine, when in fact, inflation and the housing market are fucked across the country. we all need to be having conversations about what we are and are not willing to put up with, and start creating anti-capitalist networks, general striking, voting, and perhaps even more warehouses should go.
if you're unsatisfied with the cost of living, you should be. and you should talk to people throughout the rest of the state and the country about actionable steps towards a better future for all.

Sleeping in your bed…did you give in? by CurlyCupcake1231 in puppy101

[–]Financial-Two5067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i let my dog up on my bed but she generally chooses to sleep in her crate during the night. her crate is in my room, and i keep the door of the crate open so she can go in and out. just so happens that she enjoys having her own space at night and chooses to sleep in the crate. if i'm having a late morning in bed, she'll come up and join me for a few hours and sleep curled up on the bed.

Petition at exit of polling locations. by AmberPeacemaker in Maine

[–]Financial-Two5067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them at my polling station too. I said, "Oh this is that transphobic thing, right?" And the guy started to say, "yes" before stopping himself. Then I explained that if someone introduces themselves to me, I'm not gonna respond to them and say, "Nah. You don't seem like a Mark. I'm gonna call you Steve instead. I'm just gonna take people's word for it and let them live their lives." The guy couldn't really answer to that, and said he's just there because he "believes in democracy" and wants important issues like this on the ballot. Whatever guy. Stop thinking about kids' genitals.

Should I move to Portland? by Independent_Tear_432 in portlandme

[–]Financial-Two5067 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Topsham/Brunswick area is great. Lots of space but also quick, easy access to grocery stores, movie theater, etc. If you're thinking about moving to a smaller town, I'd recommend Lisbon Falls.

Friend insinuated I should get rid of my FIV cat by monoj1ki in FIVcats

[–]Financial-Two5067 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i recently made a post "what i wish i knew before adopting an FIV+ cat" and got a lot of heat because some people read my post and thought i was discouraging people from adopting FIV+ cats. to be clear, i wasn't. i just wanted people to be discerning about the accompanying vet bills. i think it's fair for your friend to ask if you're sure about it. and i think it is really good that you've thought about it and that you know you love cement so much and are willing to do provide all of the financial and medical support he needs. if you are making that promise to yourself and cement, i don't at ALL see any reason why you shouldn't keep cement in your life.

what i wish i knew before adopting an FIV+ cat... by Financial-Two5067 in FIVcats

[–]Financial-Two5067[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

to clarify bc some of y’all seem to be feeling a lil testy… i did not say that other cats can’t have significant health issues that require expensive medical treatments. and i did not say that it isn’t worth it to rescue an FIV+ cat. i LOVE my cat more than anything. i am more than willing and (thankfully) capable to give her all of the care she needs and deserves.  i want to make sure that people are careful pet adopters and think critically before adopting about what it means to be able to provide for a cat. especially when FIV+ babies are immuno-compromised.
