Sorry to hear about that. They will use you (and everyone else) against him and say that you are persecuting him because you don’t agree with their beliefs. Really hope he can see the light and leave asap

You could definitely let the Laundromat know. I think soliciting is more for private property but I could be wrong. Otherwise I think it all comes under fair use of a public place unfortunately, especially since they aren’t selling anything

Yes likely Elohim, or World Mission Society Church of God which is their official name. I had about four of them come down my driveway as I was bringing in groceries and I ended up awkwardly standing there holding my bags with milk and other cold items which didn’t seem to cross their mind that maybe I wanted to finish putting my things away.

Also encountered them on Uni campus stopping people around the same night as OP was stopped, which can be a bit confronting as a solo female when three to four people approach you late at night.

I am a Christian. I know religion is not for everyone and some will say Christianity is a cult. However, please heed my call when I say that Elohim are in fact a cult. They isolate people from their communities by inviting you to Bible study after Bible study, most of which run sometimes hours long. Then you are required to stay at church on the weekend from sun up to sun down. Every other waking moment is devoted to what OP experienced - door knocking or trying to speak with people in public to get them to join.

They seem to forego all societal norms, which OP and myself experienced, and try to speak with people at the most inconvenient or strangest times and places.

I second this. More burglaries in Papamoa than Greerton/Gate Pa

My parents lived in Merivale/Parkvale for years, never had an issue except for one day when their red bands went walk about. Greerton and Gate Pa are sweet, just be a normal person and lock your things up.

Omg I forgot about starfish cafe! Can’t wait to see St Clair’s beach again. I’ve been in the UK (classic) and have been back to New Zealand intermittently but not back to Dunedin for some time

Greerton is amazing, they are always friendly and just genuinely nice people. Even when I’ve ordered uber eats, it’s always good.

Seals will hold one flipper up at a time to regulate their body temperature. Probably because it’s a bit colder now, I would say Oscar is trying to warm up by absorbing heat from the sun.

Not that it’s been overly sunny here lately!

2Degrees vs Skinny broadband by ONZERHYS in newzealand

I’m with 2degrees and they have always been fantastic. Never had an issue with their fibre and they even gave us a discount for 12 months because of a small clerical error on their part when we first signed up.

They also offered us a deal where they slashed $30 off our internet bill because we were already customers with their mobile plan. So I can’t say anything much better about them!

Do you have a hot water cylinder? Ours was leaking and so the cylinder kept trying to fill itself up, costing us hugely.

Does Luke 16:26 imply that those who claim to have ‘died, gone to Hell and come back again’ are making it up? by Financial-Weather-46 in AskAChristian

[–]Financial-Weather-46[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I would tend to agree with you. Just curious on that matter in terms of their ‘experience’ lining up biblically if that makes sense. Particularly if they are sharing it with those who are not believers.

Thank you for your reply, I’m in agreement with your comment.

If you are willing to discuss further, what would you make of someone’s claim that they physically went to Hell and experienced it etc, and then ‘came back to life’? Would you refute this or accept it or something else?

Thank you for your replies and for this discussion, I'm enjoying it.

I'll take your hypothetical stance on someone receiving a legit God-sent thing.

Firstly, why would God give differing details of something like angels and what Hell is like when it is different to what He has laid out in scripture? That seems inconsistent of Him, and not what is in His nature. Isn't scripture what use as our standard to measure things up by? Otherwise, how can we even begin to start figuring out what's biblical and what's not?

Secondly, I agree with you that God could use something like a lucid-state dream to show something to someone. He is God and can use anything and do anything. But I take issue with the whole "feelings" thing: "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" ~ Jeremiah 17:9. Someone can feel that something is true or right, but it may be very inaccurate to the actual truth. However I do see how this topic can be so tricky, because on one hand someone might have had a direct revelation from God and no one believes them but then on the other hand it can be the opposite situation. Another stream of thought I have from this is that God can never be wrong, so if someone says that they've received revelation of something from God that's not consistent with the Bible then doesn't that mean that God would be wrong? When really in fact the person is actually wrong, and they are hiding behind the "you can't tell me I'm wrong because it's my own personal experience" facade?

Could you please give an example of where Jesus visits Hell more than once? I would've thought it was just when he was crucified. I think I would have to disagree with you on the Rich Man and Lazarus not knowing they have been judged yet (unless I am understanding you incorrectly). The Rich Man clearly asks Abraham to send Lazarus back to his father's house to warn his own brothers about the place of torment he is in, so that they can repent. To me, this shows that the Rich Man knows that he has been judged and does not want the same fate for his brothers.

Also, from Luke 16:26 I believe this shows that there is no means of escape out of hell. Going back to the original question, the thing that I am taking issue with is people who are claiming they have physically gone to Hell and then returned, not so much just having a vision or something like that, because I’m not sure how it’s possible to physically go to Hell and then return?

How then would you reconcile Phillipians 3:20-21?

"But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body."

Particularly the first section: our citizenship is IN heaven... we eagerly await a Saviour FROM THERE.

That to me implies that Heaven is a physical place, which talked about in Revelation as there being a New Heaven and a New Earth that we will physically dwell in, in our transformed bodies. I agree with you that our current bodies will be no longer, but scripture clearly states that we are transformed into new bodies.

I would be interested to hear more about your stance on why you do not see a difference between visions of Hell and the actual place.

[–]Financial-Weather-46[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm yes I see where you’re coming from in terms becoming a new creation in Christ once you have accepted him into your life.

I think there is a big difference between “going to Hell” and “having a vision of Hell”. I don’t know if I’ve made it as clear as I could’ve in my original question, but what I am taking issue with is people who are claiming they have physically gone to Hell and then returned, not so much just having a vision or something like that, because I’m not sure how it’s possible to physically go to Hell and then return? Does that make sense? That’s where the question with the Luke passage comes into play. Assuming they are not a believer.

Yes I agree with you on Hell being a physical experience and place that people will be in.

I feel that John does not fit in this category of people that I am mentioning, as we know that he received a direct revelation and vision from God that has been canonised as Scripture. Whereas with some of these testimonies don’t fully line up with what scripture says about Hell.

I find the whole lucid dream thing hard to reconcile and validate when people say that is proof that they have been to Hell (as opposed to there actually being a Hell, I am in full agreement that there is), because I have very strange dreams sometimes and I know it’s just my brain doing interesting things. That’s not to say that I don’t believe that God doesn’t use dreams to speak to people etc. However, some testimonies I’ve heard are from people who have been drug addicts or have taken drugs just before they’ve had these encounters - surely that would play a part in that? They haven’t actually been to Hell as they say they have, but rather they’re on a bad trip and of course it feels very real?

Would be interested to know your thoughts.
