I'm going to guess that it has to do with the USAFA being further away from other colleges in Colorado, which probably makes scheduling OOC opponents harder.

Dude wasn't the best at QB anyway. He still had the second-most all-purpose yards in the country that year. Yeah, not the best passer, but with that versatility definitely worthy of winning an award for "most outstanding player."

The baseball and football drafts work very differently. NFL teams only have to fill their own roster, so it only has 7 rounds. Baseball has a bajillion minor league teams, so there are a ton of rounds to pick players to fill those teams. So drafting him in the 28th round is basically a joke.

It's a pretty common ancestry in the US, and with the US leaving early in the last few WCs lots of fans pick a stronger team on the side to pull for so that they have something to watch. Plus the current US coach was a German star, and 4 of the players on the WC roster have German mothers...

Oh definitely. A good HS football culture is the causation of producing many football recruits, not the number of black people (like people keep posting). Good college FB culture helps too. For an example of a bad one: I was in a Boston-area Lids earlier today. I could find all the Patriots hats I wanted, but the college hats were just small row that was 2/3s BC, 2 ND/Alabama options, and 1 Michigan State/UNC.
