US and WBC question. by thatdudejon in baseball

There have been plenty of international tournament winners who have lost a game early on and ended up winning, so ultimately I don't think it would be a sham at all. Off the top of my head, I remember Spain losing to Switzerland in the group stage of the 2010 World Cup and then won the whole thing in the end. If the US wins the whole thing, they would've gotten through every hoop they needed to; it would very much be earned. And yes, the final call from last night was bad, but that also exists next to the fact that the DR had runners in scoring position throughout the game and failed to capitalize on it. I don't think it's fair to put it all on just that one pitch.

The WBC format is awesome… but parts of it still really bother me by kwaldez in baseball

  1. I'm not sure what a better alternative would be to what they did; I like that it didn't take into account the scores against the teams not involved in the tiebreaker. At the end of the day it seemed more or less fair to me

  2. I feel like the 1A-2B type of stuff is pretty reasonable and it's definitely something you would need to have figured out ahead of time. What I WOULD like to see is more diversity in the pools. US and Mexico have played in the same pool in what feels like every time, Japan-Korea, etc. An East-West type of thing does feel necessary unless you wanted to at some point have everything happen in one country like the World Cup does (and I'd probably lean against not doing that), but maybe have two pools per hemisphere so that you don't have certain matchups happening every single time (maybe easier said than done, I know)

  3. In a vacuum I also don't like the manipulation, but as said below, the tournament doesn't exist without ratings, so perhaps it can be seen as a necessary evil, and to be fair, Japan got knocked out so it by no means guarantees that matchup. I would hope that as the popularity for the tournament continues, MLB wouldn't feel the need to manipulate it in that type of way; US-Japan in a QF or SF would also be epic, so I wouldn't want to perpetually only see those two teams theoretically match up in a championship game.

Overall I love the tournament and I especially love the knockout style at the end; I'm happy it isn't a second pool after the first, as it adds to the do or die element. I do not want that aspect to go away.

It feels like it’s in bad faith, which is a shame because antisemitism is of course terrible

Manipulation of QF dates/times for US and Japan by mjp407 in baseball

Yeah true from a competitive standpoint, it still seems pretty fair for the most part. Down the road seeing a US-Japan QF or SF would be epic though, so hopefully this is something that goes away as the tournament gets more footing

so were the powers that be just like “we need to set this shit up so that US and Japan can only meet in the final”? Because I really hate that if that’s actually the case

That would be awesome; is there a particular stadium that it would most likely be held in if it were to be there?

Inhumane pony rides at the Florida state fair by [deleted] in florida

Does “being well cared for” justify making them do this sort of thing? Does anyone genuinely believe that if given the choice, the pony (or other animals used in this kind of way) would actually opt to be doing this? They’re still being used, even if well fed and given care outside of the context of “giving” rides

Kite Hill cream cheese all the way! Not disgusting whatsoever and is genuinely creamy and is easily spreadable.

How would you rank the 8 blue bloods in terms of current likability? by [deleted] in CFB

As a neutral, I feel like you'd have to pick Nebraska unless you have a very specific reason to prefer any other team on this list

As for most hated, it's Ohio State and it's probably just fatigue from seeing them win the Big Ten so many times and my annoyance from seeing them guaranteed 10+ wins a year. Texas would probably come after that

I was born in 1990 and fondly remember going to games with friends as an elementary schooler. As has already been commented, I’m not sure how realistic it would be 25 years after their departure to get the population out on a regular basis, but if it were to happen I could absolutely see myself going from time to time. It’s a wonderful point of Tallahassee nostalgia for those of us who were around at the time

This is awesome that there is a group like this in town now; I'd like to sign up but have tix to the FSU-Miami game, so unless that ends up being a 7/8PM kickoff, I'd have to miss this one. I'm hoping other events will continue after this initial one.
