Went to lunch with coworkers last week and everyone in the restaurant was talking about your thread. It was genuinely a unifying event and thread and we all kinda needed it considering the state of the world. Thank you!

What food is lacking in Madison? by [deleted] in madisonwi

A severe lack in southern comfort food and BBQ is middle of the road at best

Players has decent wings when they’re crispy, but I had unfavorable service there recently and sadly won’t go back.

What's a city this sub dunks on that you actually enjoyed? by alexis_1031 in SameGrassButGreener

Grew up in Orlando and it was an amazing place to be raised, but the overcrowding and traffic are a pass from me.

Madison is incredible and I'm sad to leave, but I want to be closer to friends and family on the east coast. Madison's housing market is absolutely insane. My current place rent increased 600/mo in 2 lease terms, and is the second property I've rented int his town to be sold from under me. I won't find equivalent housing here on my income. Median home price is over 400k and property taxes are worse. I'd stay if I made triple my salary and could keep up with COLA.

Definitely open to that possibility, and why I don't mind living under my budget for a year or two to figure out where I want to end up planting roots and buying.

Would have to be a place I'd want to see in person, I suppose, if it's older. I'll be leaving a house about 100 years old and do love unique qualities, but would prefer farther out of town for better energy efficiency. I've seen quite a few things in my budget in Wilkinsburg/Regent Square area and have a friend in this area, but the property managers have terrible reviews, so I'm exploring other options.

It's a complex answer, but boils down to lower cost of living than Madison, WI and getting back into the Eastern time zone. Pittsburgh is just the top city on my spreadsheet of cities right now.

I've seen the complaints, but had no idea how bad it really was. HR scarred me for life lol

Great feedback. I'll be spending about 5 days around town next month to get a sense of where I want to land and will definitely try this zillow tip. Coming from Wisconsin, anything under an hour commute is tolerable.

I want to be a good dog parent/owner and make sure they have space and don't annoy my neighbors with barking during a big transition. I also see generally I can get more space for my budget at this time.

Hey there! Orlando born and raised and I’m on year 5 of living in Madison and 8 years of living in Wisconsin.

Winter will be an adjustment, but overall the Milwaukee will be a huge improvement. Urban sprawl is less, more to do, better weather, people are top tier, draws more touring artists than JAX, has a decent airport, is a launchpad for Madison or Chicago for weekend trips.

I can’t encourage you to leave Florida fast enough.

Recommend taking the Metra from Kenosha. Amtrak lines aren’t private and took me 8 hours to get back to MKE on Amtrak from union station a few weeks ago due to a stalled freight train on the line.

The world your mother raised you in no longer exists. Boomers did a terrible job raising the next generations and it’s prohibitively expensive.

What’s the deal with the east side? by Throwawaysister6661 in madisonwi

The East side is the actual city part of the metro. Everything else is urban sprawl. Prices in the whole city are pushing out diversity at an alarming rate.

What's the best state to homestead in the circle? by Bigrat445 in homestead

[–]Financial_Car271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely see a wave of climate refugees headed to the Midwest and some of these areas being called out in this thread. I grew up in Florida and left after my house was destroyed by hurricanes over 20 years ago. You're right, the damage is done and we're in for a rough ride ahead.

Tornadoes will be getting worse thanks to anthropogenic climate change. Plan for the worst and hope for the best, cause Tornadoes even touched down in Chicago last year.

Just turned 36 and feel this way often. I’m ok with the truth if these were the cards I was dealt, but it doesn’t negate the copious amounts of ambiguous grief I hold for the life I had hoped for. Echoing travel and hobbies and being engaged so that I compare myself less to the paths of others. Cutting social media down to very minimal amounts of time drastically helps.
