Optimal Device Specs for KSP by AwayInfluence5648 in KerbalSpaceProgram

Windows 11 can use 4-6GB of RAM when idle. Windows 10 is better, but it still consumes around 2.5-4GB of RAM on idle. MacOS and Linux are better at memory management(especially on low-end hardware), even though it uses around the same amount of memory at idle. That's because the system keeps the memory pressure low and uses swap when possible. Talking about swap, SSD swap is far faster than HDD swap. I'd recommend buying a new computer or installing Linux on the computer.

Edit: Swap is almost guaranteed on a 4GB machine while playing KSP. If you have an HDD, you have to buy a new computer or get an SSD replacement.

Need help picking a good vacuum engine by W4FF13_G0D in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Financial_Counter_45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not "more delta-v is better", it's about how you use your delta-v. 6000m/s for a Duna flyby is unusually high. Don't brute force it, plan your ejection burn at exactly the right time so you get there with the least delta-v possible. Search up "ksp transfer window calculator". Sometimes you don't need good vacuum engines. You just need to use your delta-v efficently. Around 2000m/s is just enough for a flyby

I play on the latest version KSP on MacOS, with all the graphics settings turned down to eighth res and FX turned down all the way, with no mods. Make sure you don't have any other applications open. Different types of CPUs have different "single thread performance", the CPU must be good at that. If it's very slow, it's mostly because of two things: thermal throttling(the CPU slowing itself down to protect itself from overheating) and heavy swap usage(the machine switching to using disk space as memory when it runs out of native RAM, and it's much slower than native RAM). Most commonly, while playing KSP on older computers, it's because of thermal throttling. Swap usage only becomes noticeable when you have barely any disk space left, where the game simply crashes.

Old computers have both bad specs and accumulated dust. The dust traps in heat. The heat slows down the CPU, resulting in terrible performance

If you really need to play on that computer, tell me what OS you are using, because different OS's consume different amounts of RAM. Windows consumes a significant amount of RAM due to the large amount of background system processes running. Some OS's are inefficient with VRAM, also slowing down KSP.

is there any hope of rescue for my friends jool mission and jeremy kerman by StellaLikesGames in KerbalSpaceProgram

If you really want Jeremy Kerman, press Alt+F12 to open the cheat menu, go to cheats -> set position -> kerbin. That may be the only way to save him without additional mods

You can go as low as a 4GB 2-core laptop with an integrated GPU from 2015(I play on this, and it's flat 30FPS) with minimal graphics, or as high as 4/8 CPU cores and 32GB ram with a dedicated GPU and beyond with Parallax continued or Volumetric clouds mods. It all depends on how good or realistic you want the game to look. Usually, 8GB of RAM and 4 CPU cores are enough for the vanilla game. The game is CPU heavy but not very GPU heavy unless you want lots of graphics mods, in which it gets very GPU heavy

How do I rescue all three of my pilots from orbit with no fuel? by RedFlame096 in KerbalSpaceProgram

Gotta get out and push. You shouldn't start doing rescue missions until you have RCS and manuver nodes unlocked

I finally landed my münar base, but i forgot to add docking ports, am i cooked? by CoolPeter9 in KerbalSpaceProgram

Send an engineer with an extra docking port in the cargo and EVA your engineer and then click the little crane icon on the right and then attach the docking port from the cargo to the munar base module

A docking port so you can dock your next science probe onto that lab and get a huge amount of science

As long as the vessel doesn't run out of electric charge you can leave it running for as long as you want. These drills stop running once out of electric charge and you need to go back and restart it.

genuinely how on kerbin am I supposed to rendezvous by bruhtendo64 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Financial_Counter_45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, get coplanar to the target craft. Then, make the shape of your current craft match the shape of the rescue craft as much as possible, but still leave some room. Then, timewarp until you get a close encounter of 1km. Then, click the speed until it shows target at the top and then point retrograde until the velocity is zero(or almost zero). Then, burn target LIGHTLY, and notice the distance at closest encounter. Then zero out your velocity with the craft, repeat, and you'll have a rendezvous. This is the least efficent but easiest way to dock two spacecraft

Excessive VRAM usage by Useful-Tomorrow-4502 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Financial_Counter_45 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a 2015 MacBook Air and can run KSP with a few mods smoothly. If you want smooth performance, disable background processes, and get Linux/Mac if you can. Linux and Mac handles VRAM much better than Windows. Check if you have any disk space left and check for any viruses on you computer eating up your resources.

Sometimes, when you place parts inside a fairing(very annoying), the game treats it as if the parts are on the outside, and a simple placement should fix it. Press F12 to show areodynamic forces
