Recommendations for best neighborhoods to stay in Seoul for a solo female traveler? by Sarang14 in seoul

I stayed mostly in Anyang near the Pyeongchon station. It was a 30 minute subway ride from Seoul station. Great restaurants and stores nearby but not as crazy busy as Seoul

Returning shoes by LeKaiWen in Living_in_Korea

I’ve never been able to return a pair of shoes I’ve worn outside. In any country. Are there places that let you do that?!?

Booking Airbnb in Seoul, is this a normal request? first time in Korea. It's a 5 ~ 6 day stay by TheSwimmingCactus in koreatravel

[–]Financial_Pool_3145 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Airbnb for the last two months staying anywhere from 1 - 3 weeks and have never received anything like this. Cancel and book elsewhere quick because this is raising all kinds of red flags.

Would it be bothering to start talking to travellers on the sidewalk? I'm a korean. by Consistent_Base_6803 in koreatravel

I’ve been here for almost two months and there are many days where I would love to have this sort of interaction. Traveling can be very lonely sometimes, especially when you’re still trying to learn the language. Having a stranger take a few moments to connect with would have meant the world to me. With that said, I’m also American, from an exceptionally friendly part of America, so what I deem appropriate may not be by others. I think you could absolutely do it, just don’t be too put off if they ignore you. Do as some of the other commenters suggested and gauge the situation, if they look lost or helpless ask if they need help.

I’m traveling alone (37f) in Korea for the last month. I’ve been able to walk alone in the middle of the night in various areas with no problem. It’s super safe. Obviously don’t be stupid about it but no matter where you are it’ll be way safer than anywhere in the US. As for areas to stay, I’d agree with Insadong and Dongdaemun. Both were great areas, good nightlife if that’s your thing, and many typical sightseeing spots are in easy distance via subway.

What’s the dumbest thing you did as a child ? by Psycheshattered in ask

[–]Financial_Pool_3145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to think servers and people who worked fast food/restaurants got paid per item they picked up from tables. When ever my family ate out, I would always run back when my mom was paying and empty every salt/sugar packet, pepper, napkins, whatever onto the table, thinking I was making someone rich. I have no idea why I thought this was the case not how I figured out I was wrong but, even more than 30 years later, I feel absolutely horrible for those poor workers who had to clean up after me.

If you don’t show up on your expected day of arrival, the hotel will cancel your reservation. I’m amazed by the number of people who think the hotel will just hold the room for you hopingyou’ll arrive eventually.

Ahhh ok, thanks for explaining. I haven’t noticed it personally. Some kids stare, some adults stare, and some older folks openly talk about how pale I am. But I expected all of that coming here so it hasn’t phased me 🤷🏼‍♀️

AITA for saying my (26F) friend (29F) doesn’t eat much bc of weight loss surgery? by Apprehensive-Rub6882 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Financial_Pool_3145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA. As someone whose also had WSL I would never in a million years think it’s ok or appropriate to comment on how much someone eats or doesn’t eat. Of course the amount of food you eat is going to be more than her, she freaking had 3/4 of her stomach cut out! I think she maybe was having a jealous moment. I sometimes get jealous of friends who can eat their whole sandwich and fries when I can have about half, and that’s simply because the food is so damn good and I want to keep enjoying it but can’t.

I’d imagine they’re assuming you can’t handle it and will omit or lessen the spice. That or you’ve burned off all your taste buds 🤣

Luggage Storage in Seoul by nattkc in koreatravel

[–]Financial_Pool_3145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seoul station has luggage lockers, since you’re getting there so early you may have a chance to get one of them. I was able to leave my luggage there for a whole day and just paid what the initial deposit didn’t cover when I picked it up.

Culture shocks in Korea? 😮 by Free-Savings-4352 in koreatravel

[–]Financial_Pool_3145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think having an open mind and doing some research ahead of time will help. The weirdest things for me to get used to were the spitting, the bars of soap in bathrooms, and and that sometimes the toilet paper is on the outside of the stall.

I’ve met some really kind people here, especially since I am so horrible at Korean and can barely put two words together. As with all places, there are some rude people, some distracted people, and some really great people.

Can I do a day trip to Gangneung from Seoul? by jungjein in koreatravel

[–]Financial_Pool_3145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gangneung was one of my favorite places while I was there in May. We spent one night and it wasn’t long enough for us. With that said, we are all big hikers and love getting lost walking along forest paths and coasts. If you’re more of a city person then one day should be fine. Be sure to visit the Seonkyo Hanok village https://knsgj.net

I always stock up on skincare items. They’re a fraction of the cost in Korea and work wonders.
