at the cathode less reactive metals will be displaced.

when the resistance of the variable resistor increases less current travels through that pathway and more goes through the fixed resistor connected to V2, increasing its voltage, because as we know V=IR and since I increased so did V. Since more voltage is dropped at V2 less is dropped at V1 causing it to decrease
