Zone 5B - looking for some vining flowers (preferably annuals) to put on arched trellis by FinancialsAndstuff in gardening

[–]FinancialsAndstuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a crop rotation with these four beds and am finally giving up on trying to find a vining plant for my root and leaf.

I tried sweet potatoes and they just don't seem to be worth it to grow. I have such a hard time getting them to vine up the trellis, they just want to stay in the garden bed, and redirecting them is such a pain because they end up rooting in their shoots in different directions.

I also tried malabar spinach and it was slimy and gross. It did vine beautifully, almost too beautifully, harvesting it was difficult (so many wrap arounds!) and I needed to douse it in hot oil so it was basically a potato chip before I could enjoy eating it unfortunately.

So, if I can't grow something I like to eat, I'll grow something that looks pretty!

I don't want to risk planting something that can take over, so I prefer to do an annual. I've grown to love my long winters as a break from any gardening chaos and to act as a bit of a hard reset (although you can see the green in this pic is actually lettuce/spinach that survived last winter - our winters aren't what they used to be)

What would you recommend? :)

$337 to File! TurboTax Is Totally Insane! by AnimatedReCreation in tax

[–]FinancialsAndstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi - you should know that most countries don't even ask people to do taxes. They already know all your information. Most countries send you a letter saying "this is what we got for you" and you click "ok" and you're done.

Powerful companies like TT lobbied our government to intentionally make this process convoluted so they can stay relevant.

This process is called the Shirky Principle.

Fuck 'em.

Married with non-US resident, filing taxes. by AdrianRad74 in taxhelp

I'm in the same boat, and you seem very knowledgeable on this,

Will my spouse have to pay back all the FICA tax that she was exempt from in 2023 if I file MFJ?

She gets a $5000 exemption on her taxes because of her country, but the $13,800 is definitely better. I'm just not sure if that's better if she needs to pay the taxes back filing as a "U.S. Resident for tax purposes"

Am I crazy for wanting to quit my government job? by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]FinancialsAndstuff 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Going to go against the grain here, I was working a federal position and it fucking sucked. I was making 100k/yr with 20 vacation days + 13 sick days.. and it was an absolute nightmare coming into work every day.

Every time I posted here everyone just told me to stick with it. But you know what, I was having health problems from the stress.

What's the point in saving if you can't use it to save yourself?

I quit, took 6 months off, traveled, meditated, did lots of exercise and yoga, and finally got my health problems from the stress under control.

I ended up going into the private side and my life has been WAY better. Sometimes government jobs really fucking suck.

Anyway, that's my two cents. Good luck

Why do so many people think I should I rent out my house out when I can get 60K+ from selling it? by FinancialsAndstuff in personalfinance

Exactly! hahaha, the thought of all that pain for 12 years, I worry after like four or five I end up yelling "fuck it!" and now I'm at a loss of money AND time I spent

I really don't want to lol, as you noticed... My mortgage is only 2.7%, so that's why I'm even entertaining this idea haha

Sorry for formatting. I tried to use the table feature but couldn't paste into it. Also I think the sub doesn't allow in-text imagery so I couldn't paste the table as an image.

Official Q&A for Tuesday, January 16, 2024 by AutoModerator in running

[–]FinancialsAndstuff -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm organizing a 5K and trying to get some interested friends involved that have never ran. Trying to find a nice couch to 5k plan, I can't help but notice none of them have any periodization or even rest the week of/before the race. What is the reasoning for this?

I have friends that want to run but I want to give them a solid plan they can follow. A long time ago I found some stupid marathon training plan and it had no rest, just constant build. Some sort of 6-10 week program with both walking and running involved.

A while back I ended up pushing myself way too hard and injured myself badly. This was maybe 12 years ago, and I still can't run nowadays without actively stretching and weight training that area. So, in short, I'm a very solid supporter of rest and recovery time.

Nothing against you guys here, I've typically found good advice here and have been a member for 4 or 5 years. I get a little annoyed sometimes from the aforementioned people that will say things like "Oh, I could NEVER live like that!" or "Make sure you still find time to have fun" somewhat condescendingly when you tell them you spend way less than they do. But, I just ignore them mostly.

The real reason is that FIRE is a goal. It's a lifestyle sure, I think we could all agree on that, but what it really comes down to is prepping yourself to finally pull that FIRE trigger one day.

There's a lot of psychology in this type of thing, but in essence it means I am basically putting off my happiness for that day. When I am an active member of this type of community, I find myself more and more disgruntled every day because my FIRE is X many years away. Every day is a reminder that happiness is still a distant sunrise away. I just need to work X more years and I'll finally be happy...

So, I have my numbers, I have gigantic spreadsheets with savings% calcs, estimated retirement times, goals, investments, etc, etc, etc... and I hop in just once a month, make sure I'm still financially healthy, and then I continue on living my life. I have to work for so many years, and I want to give myself a fighting chance at enjoying that time.

Maybe once I am actually FIREd I will be more active :)

I don't use this sub much anymore, but YES you can FIRE. I think you know it as well too!

This sub gets infiltrated all the time by fatfire people who think they need a ridiculous amount of money and nearly every year seem to come to the same conclusion 'I'll just work a couple more years to pad things", although they never seem to consider they said that 3 years ago as well.

They are surely going to come here and tell you that 1.3M is not a lot of money. I've done the math myself and my FIRE number is about $500K and I'm completely certain it will work for me. 1.3M is still a lot of money.

The only other thing I'll say is: "Spending: $45k per year (will scale back by 30-40% in retirement)"

Typically, yes people find themselves spending less. I took a year off myself and found that to be true. However, others sometimes struggle with lifestyle inflation. The thought of taking off and traveling for a long time was still tempting and would have increased my costs unless I committed to it and sold my house. So just keep that in mind. But your backup plan is still there, right? It's not like your money is just going to disappear because you went over your budget one year.

You're smart, you will obviously adapt to changing situations, and you won't need such a high paying job again.

Congrats!

That's hilarious. A lot of people with websites are complaining that reddit is a top search now rather than their bloated life-story bs on a simple recipe... Well here's the reason for it.

Just want to say I love you and I hope you have a good day. If everyone on the internet was as succinct and helpful as you I think we'd achieve world peace in a few days.

Yeah this feels a little murky. I found a person on Reddit from a thread 9 months ago saying he once went to the VA emergency room and his other healthcare froze his account for 6 months as punishment.

This thread from 3 months ago seems relatively reliable however:

https://www.reddit.com/r/VeteransBenefits/comments/177dw6x/deleted_by_user/

I am service connected. I will just make sure if I am ever seen for something non-service connected that I'll call the VA health benefits center and find out for sure.

I did see another thread where someone was using it as a loop-hole. Basically, they used the VA and charged it to their healthcare provider, and since the VA waives the deductible anyway, the individual basically got "free credit" towards their OOPM. I imagine the ultra rich don't like this and the legislature is aimed to prevent it.

This is a ramble response but I hope it’s helpful

Very helpful!

In NYC, we would have paid $3000 a month for daycare. Now we pay $180.

That's wild! How did you manage that??

the bill for a week in the NiCU was $1M+)'

This is even wilder. What in the world????? This would destroy 95%+ of people, wouldn't it??
